  • Dirty Numberplate scam 2 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Whilst travelling up to Warrington from Surrey at the weekend, I noticed several cars (mostly BMWs) with very dirty rears, and unreadable numberplates. This is obviously a speed camera scam, but I was amazed that the police didn't stop any of them (the cars must have been in this state for some time) Are cameras able to pick-out the registration number when the plate is in this state, or do the police not care as it's just part of the numbers game?

  • Red + amber = ? 6 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Most people begin to move off if the road is clear but is this an offence? I believe that traffic light cameras take one photo as a vehicle crosses the white line and another to determine that it actually crossed the junction or whatever, i.e. that it didn't make an emergency stop after crossing the line. What does the camera record if someone starts to cross on amber+red?

I knew this fellow had been done for Dangerous Driving (and quite indefensible) what got me was the irony of being caught by his own camera, seeing as we spend most of our time avoiding HMG's cameras. A large poster advertising some Toyota or other has popped up in town recently, pictured is the aforementioned Toyota (can't remeber the model) parked by a Gatso being photographed, wonderful ironic advertising I thought.
  • M4 Jnc 24, Black pods on gantry?? 20 Dec 2015 (Forum)
Noticed recently on the M4 J24 (Coldra) Westbound, that there are black pods like Hair dryers over looking each of the 3 lane from the gantry. Currently there are no camera's on this gantry as we know them, but gantry before has large grey boxed cameras. But heard rumours of this stretch East and West bound are to become 'Average Speed coverage) as in Port Talbot area.
  • Driving without lights 16 Oct 2015 (Forum)
It was dusk when I was driving but the street lights had not yet come on as there was still some light.I did not have my lights on though most of the other cars had. As I approached a signal noticed that a red light had come on one of the mounted cameras which disappeared after I switched on my headlights. What does it mean? 2. Any idea how often people get penalized for driving without lights which are identified by a camera?

  • Warning for drivers visiting Cambridge 31 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Plethora of fixed speed cameras, they are in operation. In comparison, the whole of Suffolk has just one or two. Also, keep out of bus lanes. Cameras are functioning. If you are visiting it is best to 'Park and ride'.
  • Any - Forgot to Display Tax Disc 9 Sep 2012 (Forum)
Oh dear, had new tax disc a fortnight and today I forgot to put it on.  I was in town and have gone past a camera that  I think checks for tax dodgers and I was also parked on street.  I read where traffic wardens can fine you the same as a parking fine and nothing has happened with that.  I was just wondering if anything could happen via the camera.
  • A subject to divide the back room? 9 May 2008 (Forum)
Passenger moons at speed camera... One for the high moral finger waggers here to get hot under the collar about and also one for the anti-camera fraternity to applaud. Who will win out? The attached has a very blurred image of the mooning taking place so if you think you might possibly throw a wobbly at this sight then don't click, but the BBC think it's OK http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/7378695.stm
  • Gatso's and Road Markings 16 Oct 2006 (Forum)
There a 3 new style Gatsos, (the ones with smaller head units), between J18 and J19 of the M4 in the roadworks. For each camera, lanes 2 and 3 have white lines marked but lane 1 does not. BTW, these cameras are linked via satellite to somewhere, judging by the large dish next to them, and I'm pretty convinced they are operational as I've them flash (not at me I hasten to add!).
  • New number plates 25 Oct 2001 (Forum)
DA51 DEL could be easily mistaken for D451 DEL, couldn't it ?? There are many examples like this but can cameras or the general public distinguish these at a distance ? Why isn't there a space between the first 4 characters such as DA 51 DEL - surely it's obvious ??? Also.... Is it true that digital cameras can't read number plates as on Motorbikes where the first few characters are directly above the second set ?
  • WARNING: New Speed Camera 13 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I have had a meeting with the contractors today and thought it wise to advise everyone that from sometime next fully active speed cameras will be in place and in operation. The Safer Roads Partnership vans will also be enforcing the 40mph speed limit through the road work section. During the day it may appear that no work is taking place.
  • Uninsured cars and ANPR - again! 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
We all know insurance is expensive but if you can't afford it you can't have a car, can you? Tough. But where's the ANPR system then? You can't go on the road without being tracked by cameras and police forces like to hold onto the data. But what are they doing with it? Why can't it be used to take uninsured people off the road? If you put this together with the suggestion the other day that 1 crime is solved for every 1000 CCTV cameras, you come to the conclusion that the sacrifice of our privacy to all sorts of snooping cameras isn't worth the benefit in the maintenance of the law.
  • The man in the Speed Camera van... 24 Jul 2009 (Forum)
\_____________x_________________ -> NSL "B" road There was a SCamera van just inside the limit sign, camera pointing back towards the corner. I stopped for a quick chat, being interested. Bear in mind that this was a big bright white transit-sized van, with highly visible markings, parked partly on the verge.
  • BMW 320i - Bought a new car - forgot to tax when I paid it 24 May 2024 (Forum)
It was already taxed, but halfway down the motorway I realised I hadn't taxed it myself. Obviously a lot of ANPR cameras. Would the police or DVLA come after me and issue me a fine for this? Or is it ok as it is already taxed just not in my name (I know since 2017 you have to tax it at sale, but presumably to an ANPR camera it will still show as taxed).
