Much more profitable these average speed cameras - and if they're not they'll drop the tolerance further.

No one would object to a speed limit being enforced to protect the workforce but if the current roadworks on the A1(m) at Durham are anything to go by the workforce are only there 9am to 4pm Mon to Thur and a nice early finish on a Friday. The rest of the time its deserted but the cameras are still clocking your reg. and spitting out their fines.

The workforce may have gone but have the cones, narrow lanes and other dangers?

As with all speed limits if you obey them you will not get caught or fined, its as simple as that.

As for lower limits where there are road works and/or lane restrictions there is a 15 mile stretch on the M1 near us that has been ongoing for almost 2 years now. If you calculate how long it takes at 70 mph its 13 minutes. At 50 mph its 18 minutes.

So it adds 5 minutes to my journey time (probably each way).

If I need to get to my destination on time I set out 5 minutes earlier but its very easy to loose more than 5 minutes at lights and in traffic before I even get to the M1.

What tickles me is

1. 80 a day four months on..

2. when i go through, often.. I add. I have yet to see anyone pass me at my 49mph (sat nav with adjustable tolerance..)

3 Surely all the "locals" know by now.

maybe Hj can ask Gosafe for a geographical breakdown of "revenue providers"

The effect on the A1(m) ones is a cumlative one - because its 50mph and people are now terrified of our cctv-police state mentality the speed is generally around 40mph.

The length of the queue before and after the 6 mile stretch is therefore another downside - it takes a good mile or two for the traffic to thin back out again.

As with all speed limits, if you obey them you will not get caught or fined, its as simple as that.

And probably not if you do 10% (indicated) over the limit either. Our quicker friends would probably agree that not all drivers should be allowed a speeding dispensation, so why should they?

It's cops and robbers again - you know the rules, so don't whinge if you get caught. It's only a gentle hit in the wallet after all.

It's only a gentle hit in the wallet after all.

Anyone who's been done for speeding, even 1mph over the threshold, will find out that the fine/points is just the start. Even with an SP30, over the following 6 years, the insurance cost will hit you for an extra few hundred pounds at least. My son calculated its cost him well over £700 over 4 years and was in deep depression when the company told him its stays on insurance records for at least 6 years. This was a semi hidden van that clocked him doing 57 on a dual carriageway with 50 limit in the middle of nowhere with no record of accident blackspot. He is normally very observant but had to request a photo to convince himself they snapped him.

Does anyone know what thresholds are applied to these averaging cameras?

The usual rules don't apply. It is up to the force concerned how and if they apply any tolerance.
