  Both my wife and I have (had?) full no claims (6+ years) insurance on our individual cars (mine was a Peugeot 406, hers was a Focus). Both of us were named on each insurance, since we drive the cars interchangeably. A few months ago, we sold the Peugeot, and obtained a new vehicle (Renault Scenic) under the motability scheme (my daughter is disabled), which also includes free insurance for the three years duration.

  Sorry for how long this post is, I just wanted to give all the facts rather than half a story... Last week my girlfriend's 2011 Peugeot 207 broke down whilst waiting at some traffic lights, I wasn't with her at the time. A friendly mechanic in the car behind her helped her push the car out of the way and tried starting it a few times, saying he thinks the cambelt had gone.

  This is a postmortem of how I solved the hard to start problems in an XUD9TE D8A engine that I fitted to the sons Peugeot 306 xtdt. You can find all the old threads and requests for assistance back 2 years. The end result and conclusions are that you may well get faulty advice from "french car experts" who may well miss the problem.

    Ideally have a large boot and roomy in the back so have been looking at estates.  You seem to be able to get 3/4 year old Astra Sports Tourer and Peugeot 308sw at this price but I'm worried about the reliability of these brands, I don't how well they are received nowadays? Doesn't have to be an estate but needs a big boot. Thanks

Or would just be the best deal overall?   Peugeot 206, 1.4L Petrol, manual, 2005 (£500) 83,000 miles, had lots of repairs over the last few months including new thermostat, fuel injector,battery, cross climate tyres and a full service Ford Fiesta, 1.25 L petrol, manual, 2010 Zetec (£1400) 100,000 miles, not serviced at all for four years, as far as I know, had no faults or repairs done for two years.
