  • Polo diesel poor starting 31 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I read HJ's coment on a recent post that he thinks VW diesel injectors should be changed at 80k miles and this got me thinking. This seems quite an expensive job, but if that's the problem I'll do it, because I intend to run the car another few years yet. Thanks for reading my long and involved post - I look forward to any wisdom you might be able to offer. Andy

  • Wheel bearing - "play" whats acceptable? 22 Nov 2001 (Forum)
The symptoms are that sometimes on an open clear motorway I get vibration through the steering - other times not, sometimes worse than others. Today was a classic example of two 20 mile runs on the same road, this mornings journey was ok - this evenings wasn't. If I go to the time hassle & expense of changing the bearings (£100 in parts plus say 3 hours labour) will I notice any difference?

Sub £4,000 Mazda 2 1.5 Sport 5dr I’d still give the wee Mazda the win here even in previous gen. The 1.5 Sport is a great option with nippy performance and low running costs. The chain driven petrol engines will run and run if looked after properly and they resist rot better than earlier Mazdas too. Best small family hatch £8,000 Mazda 3 2.0 Skyactiv SE These are only just slipping in below £8,000 with sensible mileages now and as with the Mazda 2 they’re brilliant things.
  • Suzuki Vitara - Replacement bulbs cost 12 Aug 2025 (Forum)
I need some help with my 3-year-old car, which is still under warranty. The daytime running light on the left side has packed in, and the LED headlight on the right side isn’t working either. I thought these were just easy bulbs to swap out like in my old cars, but I was told to ring the dealer.
  • A cheap to run luxury(ish) car? Tough one... 25 May 2023 (Forum)
At the same time, he's seen a few imported Mercedes which far exceed all his tech and aesthetic boxes, but in my mind completely miss his needs for low running costs/reliability. I'm very, very slowly getting him to get a Golf mk 7 which I truly believe he will like, and he admits he does, but he's convincing himself that an imported Merc would get him everything he's ever wanted.
  • Mazda 6 - Cam sensor fault, replacement engine cutting out 14 Dec 2018 (Forum)
Unfortunately, the new engine starts ok and runs but only for about 5 seconds then it cuts out. The cam shaft sensor was still showing so my garage ordered a Mazda genuine part and replaced it....... the code is still showing on the diagnostic computer with no other codes.
  • Mercedes-Benz C180 - Starting Probelms 7 Sep 2015 (Forum)
The Long Term Fuel Trim was around -2%, so although running a bit rich I think there is not too much of a problem there.   Another, most probably unrelated issue is that the fuel system only goes into ‘Closed Loop – Fault’ and reports that it may be running on one lambda sensor.
  • Citroen Xantia 2.0 HDi - Citroen Xantia, Startup issues 25 Apr 2014 (Forum)
Is there a way I can just bypass the immobiliser so that I can get the car started? My thinking is that,  if it then runs well for a week I can summise my issues where with the immobiliser. If doesn't run or is intermittent it could be my fuel pump. If still doesn't start then could be my keys not in sync. What I read on t'interweb is that if changing car battery to put keys in ignition and turn to 1st notch before putting the new battery on (this is meant to stop the alarm kicking in).
  • Peugeot 307 2. 0 HDI Xsi 136 - PEUGEOT 307 HDI HOT STALLING? 25 Sep 2012 (Forum)
However when you bumped the car it started fine and drove fine. I drove a 50mile motorway trip to try and run any remains of poor fuel through and had a wyns fuel cleaner in it. The problem has not been resolved. When the car get up to running temperature the car will stall unless the accelerator is depressed.
  • KIA Sedona (1999 - 2006) - 00 2.9 Stopped starting when weather was freezing 14 Feb 2012 (Forum)
When the engine is running, the battery was charging at a level that the mechanic felt was good. I think it was 13.9V. I kept having the same trouble. I discovered that when I went out to the car cold in a morning, the battery (engine still off) was 12.5V.
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 94 1.7 17DTL Cracked Cylinder Head. 3 Jun 2011 (Forum)
If I released the pressure when I finished with the car at night it would start and run normally the next morning with no misfire, and that led me to suspect that the head may have a small crack which is closed when it's warm, and opens up when it cools, allowing coolant to run into one cylinder overnight, hence the slight misfire in the morning.
  • none - owner refuses to send off V5 after swapping bikes 4 Sep 2010 (Forum)
I swapped my running moped for a spares or repair motorcycle when I swapped we did not fill in the v5's or send them off because he did not have his v5 on him at the time and i forgot to get a reciet :( . he's now broke my moped by messing with it and putting way too much 2stroke oil in.
  • Two Linux installations - Windows and Symbian S60 31 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Symbian is now open source too, similar to Linux in that aspect, but still needing Windows in certain situations.   Nokia`s PC suite (for example) just won`t run on Linux and you need a Windows box to download the several Gigs of the Ovi maps to the phone. Pity about that. And that Wine seems such a clunker if you try to use it to run many Windows apps under Linux.
  • Review - Punto van Mk2b 1.3 Multijet (pre DPF) 9 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Fitted a new one (cost £15) and used a couple of drops of Mobil 1, now and then, instead of spray grease. It`s still like new after another 15,000 miles Running faults - Went into limp mode once two years ago on going to 3,000 revs on the Motorway. This cleared and no codes. Perhasps induced by my running for months at around 2,000 revs. Lesson learned - now up to 3,500/4,000 revs every time out with a hot engine. no further problems.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 2.0 Engine stalls a few seconds after starting 13 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I am hoping someone has seen this or can give me some further ideas as I am running out!! My Focus has started to stall about 5 seconds after being started. It starts perfectly and runs fine, but it cuts out just as though it has been turned off. No lights come on until the revs drop enough for the battery light comes on.
  • Renault - Trafic 115 dci SWB 2008 15 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Gearbox is 6-spd although I rarely have found any use for 1st gear. 6th means about 1800 rpm at 70 which makes for quiet running on a long run. The 'change itself is a little clunky, especially feeling odd going into 6th, but it is light and ive not yet missed a gear. The engine is OK but as soon as it has any kind of weight in it, it soon runs out of puff up hills in the higher gears, with a sudden slow down everytime the revs fall below the turbos operating range - I suspect without the turbo this engine would be utterly useless as it seems to lack natural torque, unlike say the old Transits unit which was a real plodder.
  • Citroen C5 II (2008 - ) - C5 Impressions after four months. 3 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Acceleration is sluggish from a standing start, better once doing 30mph and very good at higher speeds. On a 10 mile run to work through town traffic and along some fast roads, I'm getting 32mpg. On the long runs, 44 mpg was the best return doing a steady 75 mph (120kmph) and using cruise control. At a slighty higher cruising speed (80 mph) 40mpg was the norm.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 07 1.6 Engine cuts out @ 70 mph 30 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Ford then give me a ring saying that it stopped because i run out of fuel!!!! I said that according to the guage there was fuel in there when i was driving it not even the red light had come on. but they were adament there was nothing wrong with the guage as they had done all the tests!!
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2001 2.0HDi Coolant loss from header tank 13 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Have read many posts and have checked for bubbles in header tank (none), hissing (none), smoke/smell from exhaust (none except on initial running), emulsion in oil (none), engine runs low 70 - 80, although if I squeeze what I think is the (squidgy!)manifold pipe I can hear a hiss from the filler cap even though the coolant seems to coming from the (overflow?)
