  • Merc Cosworth -should I ? 25 Jul 2006 (Forum)
(have heard this about merc T series over here also) Is the car a potential classic? Also is it practical in terms of parts availability. No Merc history, only specialist records. Was looking for something as a thrid car that would handle well and bring a sense of enjoyment/ occasion beyond my daily Honda coupled with my fascination for the old school mercs Please tell me if I am mad or insane
  • Getting garage to fix intermittant fault 16 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Hi, got my 8 month old car booked in for some bits, two of them are intermittant. Like, its all fine for maybe a week or two then the faults might appear once or twice, then could be ok for a week or so, etc... I have given the garge as much info as I can, but I don't want them to phone me up at the end of the day to say they could'nt fine anything wrong.
  • Fiesta handling woes 25 May 2006 (Forum)
I've had the car on stands, and can't find any excessive play in any of the suspension components. I've checked bolts are tight, that the shocks aren't leaking (they're only 6 months old anyhow!), and finally checked the tyre pressures which were as per the owners' manual.
  • Toyota Avensis D4D Knocking Noise 27 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Hi all, Car is 2003 (Old shape Toyota Avensis D4D) For the last few months car has had a knocking sound (Sounds like something hitting / vibrating against the bodywork)whenever I start the engine up or if I accelerate in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear.
  • Why don't the Germans like alloy wheels? 20 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I've travelled through Germany before but this is the first time I've actually stayed there, and as a fan of German cars I was interested to see the variations etc of the models we get here. But one of the first things I noticed was that very few cars had alloy wheels. This included the vast majority of BMW and Audi cars and many Mercs.
  • What small Car 15 Jun 2005 (Forum)
The reason the last one went was the lever inside snapped and caught the Pressure plate. It was only welded back together as a repair the last time and I suspect it may well be occuring again, I'll just wait and see !!!! Anyway if it does go faulty, the car will not be worth reapairing. So could possibley up for a replacment but what ? Town Car Small 5 doors Ideally £5k Max As young as poss Petrol 1.0 - 1.3 And (long shot) ISOfix capability. I really want a Yaris but the prices seem OTT to me ?
  • 60mile commute to work 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I'm therefore thinking about ditching the train (not particularly environmentally friendly but I'm fed up of wasting 1hr+ a day). I can't decide on whether to take a company car or use my own. I can get a pretty decent car (golf GTI, bmw 3 series) from the company for about £420/month (ie including tax, loss of allowance, etc). Or I could drive my current car (5yr old Golf GTI), but am loath to put 15k extra miles on it a year and suffer the extra depreciation.
  • New Car? 26 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hello, Managed to save up enough money to treat myself to a nicer, shinier, newer car than present runabout ('97 Pug 106). Have got about three to three and a half grand to spend plus whatever the 106 gets. Problem is, I don't know what the 106 is worth. Its a 1997(P) 3dr Extra Time special edition, done 62000 miles and is in good nick for an eight year old motor.
  • Hit & Run Nightmare 4 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Hi everyone, Last night, returning from the cinema we took the usual short cut along a fairly narrow twisty stretch of road, from Scunthorpe towards the Humber Bridge. My girlfriend was driving her 1 year old Fiesta. I noticed a car coming from the opposite direction around a tight bend who still had main beam on. Suddenly he hit the car, scraping the entire offside of the car. I jumped into the drivers seat and rushed down the road (the car hadn't stopped) unfortunatley he was long gone.
  • XR2i CVH low idle and cutting out 11 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Other times the car will cut out when the revs drop. It is getting a bit dangerous having the car cut out at busy junctions. I have checked the throttle body for any old deposits but it is fine, I even spayed carb cleaner around the throttle body but this made no change to the situation.
  • Avensis Diesel 1 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Is there a way to reset the 'average mpg' on the computer? So far I can only work out that it resets itself when I refuel the car. So far I've covered 300 miles in the car and although it doesn't perform like my old VW, it is a nice drive with great build quality. Regards, John
  • Express Fit 26 Sep 2003 (Forum)
First for a timing belt change (£120.00), second for an oil and filter change (£24.99) and today for a service. The cost was £158.00 all in for their standard service for cars 3+ years old, and: New front offside Continental Tracking Balancing Change of brake fluid In my view that's pretty damn good, and better than taking my car to a back street garage with an element of the unknown.
  • Choosing an urban car 16 May 2003 (Forum)
Opinions please: we're about to replace a 7 yr old VW with a reliable smallish car (wifes instruction) for use by wife and offspring, on mostly town and minor road work. Narrowed down on reliability and insurance cost grounds to new or nearly new Honda Civic 1.4, Jazz (1.4 of course) or Yaris 1.3.
  • New small car choice 27 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Is the Yaris due for replacement / facelift that will affect residuals? The Ideal would be to buy a new small car every three years and loose £1000 per year maximum on the initial cost. Is this sensible? She isn't bothered about extras but I think ABS is essential.
  • Honda CR-V - Suggested price for CR-V 2009 automatic 5 May 2024 (Forum)
#Replaced all 4 tires for great quality all season Good Year Vector 4 gen 3 #New compressor clutch #Twice changed engine oil and filter #Changed air and cabin filter It's passed the MOT which is valid until April 2025, but has advisory that The last MOT advisory says: Front Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened. I think this quite normal for this 15 years old car, or am I wrong and the liefespan of this car going to be end sooner or later? I'm very regret that to sell the car, as I spent a lot of money and my work. I planned to keep the car for like 5 years at least, but my wife don't like to keep the car as she think is old and has outfashion look.
  • Vauxhall corsa S Ecoflex - Car turning just not starting 28 Jun 2020 (Forum)
Took it to a garage and they changed the coil pack, spark plugs and camshaft sensor. That didn't fix the issue and they put my old parts back in (I thought I had an exetended warranty but it ran out last week) So went to pick my car up and get the keys to get it moved back home and the guy said it could be the ecu or timing chain.
  • Good Cheer 22 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I told the police I was not injured, but upon removing my hair, I found that I had a fractured skull. I was sure the old fellow would never make it to the other side of the road when I struck him. I saw a slow-moving, sad-faced old gentleman as he bounced off the hood of my car. The indirect cause of the accident was a little guy in a small car with a big mouth.
  • Skoda Octavia vRS estate - Impressions after 2,000 miles 14 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Ride and handling are fine, and the steering on this vRS is much quicker and more direct than the old one.  And it's been very sure-footed in the torrential rain.  I was very tempted by a Golf GTI.  There's a very fair comment in the current issue of CAR where the Golf and vRS are tested together - the vRS is a bigger car and just slightly more ponderous.
  • Which one for the chop ? ( or not...) 12 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Car 1- is a four year old Ford Ka mainly used by 'er indoors although I don't mind nicking it sometimes for town work. She commutes about 40 miles a day round trip and is quite fond of it but wouldn't mind a bigger car if that was the best solution.
  • A nice wet Thursday night at auction... 21 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Or they were too up in the miles or too tatty to retail, the big dealers are hanging onto anything that can be retailed even if it's 12yrs old. The days of finding a nice clean 7-12yr old car with decent miles and a history at auction are largely past certainly up here anyway. I watched the usual dodgy Joe's bid strongly for any heavy mileage stock with one next to zero history 58plate 120,000 mile Fiesta diesel make the guts of £2k including fees despite having an engine management light on and being three different colours, the only way he'll make out of that is if the mileage or history is fiddled.
