  • BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - 523i Automatic - Gear stick stuck in Park. 9 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I took the dash clocks out to change the bulb yesterday and put it back, when I put it back, the car starts ok and all fine but the gearstick won't come out of park. I thought it was to do with the brake pedal sensor but when I press the brake pedal I can still hear a little clicking noise under the gear lever. I think it's to do with the ignition - you cannot get out of park until the ignition is on, so maybe the gearbox is not sensing the ignition??

  • New towcar - Hyundai or Kia 31 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I know the Kia Sorento was last year's towcar of the year and is still a class winner but I'm attracted to the Santa Fe, it's £1k cheaper and the 5 year warranty is good news. I'm not put off by the foot activated parking brake either as I've had Citroen XMs in the past. HJ's car-by-car breakdown is helpful but the Caravan Club Tow Car of the Year mentions the Santa Fe parking brake not holding on a 17% hill and some "instability" towing.
  • warning lights: crying wolf? 2 Jun 2006 (Forum)
So, wait until that happens. On the other hand, I don't want the GF at risk. The drive of the car (inc brakes) hasn't changed. All advice welcomed! TIA, Alex. -- Dr Alex Mears MG BGT 1971 If you are in a hole stop digging...unless you are a miner.

Part no. on pulley appears to be 928 M 6B320 DDH 05 571 If I can determine beforehand if it is keyed then I do the job , if not it's off to Fords ! Another little querie for any ABS whizz-kids . I changed the brake fluid today , in the normal way - pipe in jar , pump pedal, top-up fluid etc etc Pedal fine , however on starting engine abs light and brake warning light stayed on longer than before. They go out together , when car driven off , and stay off , but on re-start same thing occurs .

  • Golf IV service - idiot questions 14 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Before I go in I would like to know if there is anything I should ask to be looked at specifically: - Brakes: The brakes are making a rubbing noise recently. Are the pads up for a change? Or the discs? - Are there any other major shocks I should expect - e.g. timing belt change. Thanks for reading, DF
  • Fiesta 1.25 coolant return pipe 31 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Are the ford hoses cheap carp or are they off pritty good quality? Is there a known problem with this pipe braking after five years? Has anyone ever changed one? If you have is it a pain to do? Last one now, should this pipe be braking up like it is. I don\'t plan on changing it for about 2 weeks because of work.
  • MOT Questions 4 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I do not know how it became twisted. The last time the brakes were worked on in any way was when the pads were replaced last October (by the same garage that has done the MOT). Is it possible/likely that the hose has become twisted as a result of the pad replacement.
  • Peugeot 205 cuts out when cold 22 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Choke or not, when cold it has a frustrating habit of instantly dying stone dead when downing the clutch and braking for whatever reason. At first I was (chauvinistically) sceptical when she told me the problem, thinking she was misjudging the use of the choke. Now I'm convinced. I assume it's some form of fuel starvation during braking because there's no problem at all re-starting.
  • More local fun 21 Dec 2002 (Forum)

  • LED Lighting eg Range Rover 5 Oct 2002 (Forum)
One thing I didn't like though was that the amber indicator LED's appeared to be in a single layer ring around the brake lights. Fine when just indicators on, but when braking and indicating not quite so visible. Anyone else noticed this effect or was it just me?
  • Being overtaken - responsibilities? 3 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Seeing him coming up, and realising that he was not going to get past, I had been in two minds as between braking to let him get past, or maintaining my speed so that he could slip in behind. If I had braked, he would have gone straight into the lorry. As it happened, I made the right decision, ie to do nothing, but either way, failing to anticipate his action would have precipitated an accident.
  • changing gears 25 Oct 2001 (Forum)
similarly - when slowing down etc, I tend to go through the gears since i find it gives better control over braking, but can this put adverse stress on the 'box too? Am I better off using just the brakes? My driving instructor taught me to not go through the gears - but he said that in days of old they did used to teach students to go through the gears like I now do.
  • Jaguar I-Pace - I-Pace nightmare? how to get solution/justice? 14 Aug 2025 (Forum)
I was wearing normal footwear, no health issues, no obstacles or doormats on pedals or anything like that and had a few terrifying seconds of trying to pump the brakes, hit the brakes anything with the brakes while steering into the safest option - i.e. smashed over the roundabout where the vegetation slowed me down as well as the loss of a couple of tyres. Police closed a lane and got me recovered and I had to report to insurance who arranged via their garage to replace a couple of tyres and maybe gave the car a polish (surprised not more damage but could be lack of a thorough check by them).
