  • My car is ten years old. What am I missing? 26 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Decent engine, 5-speed box, decent brakes, more than adequate performance, aircon, CD player and wipers that don't slow down on hills. Hope to run it to 100,000+ with no problems. So my car now is a world away from that Popular, but is still ten years old.

  • Wear-outables: string, length of 13 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Mine has done most of its miles in top gear and at motorway speed, which is gentle on these components. I know I'll have to replace the brake pads before much longer, but what about the clutch and exhaust? Is it possible to make these last indefinitely?
  • Autopilot fitted to cars. Would you trust it? 25 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Sensors would synchronise each car to follow in the wake of the vehicle directly ahead, with a laser calculating the speed relative to other cars at a rate of 50 times a second. The only steering and braking would be done by a professional driver at the front of the convoy. However the system, being developed by Volvo, could lead to a rethinking of the traditional ?braking distances? in the Highway Code.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 97 1.1 MOT costs - what should I expect?! 23 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Hi, I'm taking our car for an MOT soon and as I know NOTHING about cars I know I am going to get ripped off. Our foot brakes are really bad at the moment, the hand brake doesnt work well (unless you really wrench the thing up it rolls backwards) and we have a big crack in our front window screen. Also, think the tracking might be a bit funny and one of our back wheels may have a slow puncture - it's definately in need of a fix.. and quick!!
  • Nissan Sunny (1991 - 1995) - 94 1.4 Stalling when engine warm 9 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I have just bought an M reg Nissan Sunny which, once warm, stalls when braking and changing down the gears. The revs drop off when the clutch is dropped, the throttle off and the brake applied, and the car stalls as it comes to a stand still. Otherwise drives well, and also always starts at the first turn of the key, even just after it has stalled, and idles smoothly with no desire to stall.
  • MOT independent? 18 May 2008 (Forum)
Just got failed for Emissions and Poor rear brakes... Thing is after failing me he said have I got somewhere to plug it in? ''No'' I answered it's my first MOT (new driver) I noticed the person before also failed on Emissions and the Clerk/Worker ''i overheard'' advised the customer to come to his house where he could fix/plug it into his computer thingieMeJig....then after failing me he asked if i'd know where i'm going to get it fixed up...after giving me 3 cards i left not liking the place regreting choosing it...I will fit another catalytic converter and attempt to tighten the adjusters in the drums, or maybe its the brake assist not working... oh yes i heard that over or just really heating the engine will produce less emissions ANYWAY WHAT THE HELL IS MEANT BY ''INDEPENDENT?''
  • Citroen C4 (2004 - ) - HDi Cool 2006 - rear brake disks need replacing !! 23 Jan 2008 (Forum)

  • BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - 523i Automatic - Gear stick stuck in Park. 9 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I took the dash clocks out to change the bulb yesterday and put it back, when I put it back, the car starts ok and all fine but the gearstick won't come out of park. I thought it was to do with the brake pedal sensor but when I press the brake pedal I can still hear a little clicking noise under the gear lever. I think it's to do with the ignition - you cannot get out of park until the ignition is on, so maybe the gearbox is not sensing the ignition??
  • Vauxhall Corsa D (2006 - ) - Unwanted Bleeping Hand Brake on a new Corsa 27 Oct 2007 (Forum)
SWMBO has just splashed out on a brand new Corsa Design with all the bells and whistles. One whistle that I just can't quite come to terms with however,...
  • New towcar - Hyundai or Kia 31 Oct 2006 (Forum)
I know the Kia Sorento was last year's towcar of the year and is still a class winner but I'm attracted to the Santa Fe, it's £1k cheaper and the 5 year warranty is good news. I'm not put off by the foot activated parking brake either as I've had Citroen XMs in the past. HJ's car-by-car breakdown is helpful but the Caravan Club Tow Car of the Year mentions the Santa Fe parking brake not holding on a 17% hill and some "instability" towing.
  • warning lights: crying wolf? 2 Jun 2006 (Forum)
So, wait until that happens. On the other hand, I don't want the GF at risk. The drive of the car (inc brakes) hasn't changed. All advice welcomed! TIA, Alex. -- Dr Alex Mears MG BGT 1971 If you are in a hole stop digging...unless you are a miner.
  • P-reg Mondeo 1.8 16v 23 May 2004 (Forum)
Part no. on pulley appears to be 928 M 6B320 DDH 05 571 If I can determine beforehand if it is keyed then I do the job , if not it's off to Fords ! Another little querie for any ABS whizz-kids . I changed the brake fluid today , in the normal way - pipe in jar , pump pedal, top-up fluid etc etc Pedal fine , however on starting engine abs light and brake warning light stayed on longer than before. They go out together , when car driven off , and stay off , but on re-start same thing occurs .
  • Brake disc wear/replacement - SAAB 9-3 14 Mar 2004 (Forum)
My partner just had her 45,000 mile SAAB 9-3 serviced. The manager said that everything was fine but the mechanic said that she needed new braks discs...
  • Golf IV service - idiot questions 14 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Before I go in I would like to know if there is anything I should ask to be looked at specifically: - Brakes: The brakes are making a rubbing noise recently. Are the pads up for a change? Or the discs? - Are there any other major shocks I should expect - e.g. timing belt change. Thanks for reading, DF
  • Fiesta 1.25 coolant return pipe 31 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Are the ford hoses cheap carp or are they off pritty good quality? Is there a known problem with this pipe braking after five years? Has anyone ever changed one? If you have is it a pain to do? Last one now, should this pipe be braking up like it is. I don\'t plan on changing it for about 2 weeks because of work.
  • MOT Questions 4 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I do not know how it became twisted. The last time the brakes were worked on in any way was when the pads were replaced last October (by the same garage that has done the MOT). Is it possible/likely that the hose has become twisted as a result of the pad replacement.
  • Peugeot 205 cuts out when cold 22 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Choke or not, when cold it has a frustrating habit of instantly dying stone dead when downing the clutch and braking for whatever reason. At first I was (chauvinistically) sceptical when she told me the problem, thinking she was misjudging the use of the choke. Now I'm convinced. I assume it's some form of fuel starvation during braking because there's no problem at all re-starting.
  • More local fun 21 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Meanwhile, a Zimbabwe-registered bus was impounded and its driver fined in Johannesburg on Wednesday because it was overloaded and had no front brakes. Its worn-out steering mechanism was held together with wire.
  • LED Lighting eg Range Rover 5 Oct 2002 (Forum)
One thing I didn't like though was that the amber indicator LED's appeared to be in a single layer ring around the brake lights. Fine when just indicators on, but when braking and indicating not quite so visible. Anyone else noticed this effect or was it just me?
