HJ's recommended cars 3 Jan 2005 (Forum)
In the car-by-car breakdown, HJ is pretty sparing with the cars that he is prepared to recommend (let alone highly recommend). I got to thinking about this recently as I am looking into buying a previous shape Honda Accord. -
European Breakdown Cover - A cautionary tale 28 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I would point out that on that basis any breakdown cover where you went over to France to buy wine cheaper or buy anything would, according to this bizarre logic, render the recovery cover invalid. Meanwhile I have a car sitting 500 miles down in France and on paper i have a client who has responsibility for getting the truck back. -
Any - Breakdown cover again - excess discounts 15 Mar 2022 (Forum)
This comes up periodically but there hasn’t been a thread for a while. And I don’t recall discussion on using an excess to reduce cost. Spoiler... -
replacing broken glass 29 May 2004 (Forum)
Or am I being unrealistic in expecting the glass to be replaced within a few hours (afterall an Audi A4 is not an out of the ordinary car!)? Sorry for the winge but just really annoyed by the inconvenience (especially as I was wanting to go away tomorrow evening). -
Hyundai Tucson - New car maintenance package 31 Aug 2021 (Forum)
I have a new Hyundai Tucson Hybrid arriving on Monday and am considering taking out a maintenance plan as part of my lease. The lease company have quoted... -
Mazda 5 Venture 1.6D - Engine cut-out in fast traffic 11 Mar 2014 (Forum)
Mazda 5 Venture, 62 reg, The engine has cut out on five occasions, when accelerating in fast traffic, and the tcs/dsc light appears on. The main dealer in Southampton, that supplied the car, has had the car for four days, but has done nothing, has no idea of a cause, and says there is no record of any such fault. We have had RAC breakdown twice and they suggest switching off the TCS/DSC before every journey, but the cut-out has still occurred and of course leaves us without this safety ?? -
Road Accident Recovery. 13 Sep 2012 (Forum)
A quick scenario. Lets assume you have breakdown/recovery/relay with an organisation or a newish car with same cover provided with warranty. Accident occurs car undriveable and assuming not moved by police due to position in road. Question is who do you contact to arrange removal etc. -
Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 99 1.8 petrol manual - engine woes! 14 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Car turned over but wouldn't start, breakdown guy took it to my Opel garage (Im in Germany). No compression in 2 cylinders, so its an engine out job and cyl head off to have look at valves,(dont imagine motor needs to come out just to get head off) been warned to expect up to 900 euros! -
Renault Laguna (1994 - 2001) - 1996, 2.0 16v - not starting/no turnover 28 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Anyway, couple of questions: My 96 Laguna wouldn't start this evening, no tick over, nothing. The battery seems fine, all lights work, and it wouldn't jump start from a colleague's car. So does anyone have an idea of what has suddenly stopped working? Second question, i don't have current breakdown cover - so has anyone bought cover (Tesco seem cheapest) the night before, then phoned them up the next day to get someone out to fix their car? -
Vauxhall Astra 2.0 Di CD (recall?) 30 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Just stumbled across this site and I bought a vauxhall astra last night its a 1998 S reg 2 litre diesel, CD Di 16V, anyhow i saw this on the car by car breakdown bit: 22-08-2002: 2,436 Astras VIN range WOLOTGF3522184592 to WOLTGF672BO14989 recalled because batch of brake calliper pistons may release hydrogen gas into brake fluid. Where found to be from faulty batch are to be replaced. -
Renaut Diesel V 3 litre petrol 20 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Backroomers, I am looking for a 3 year old Renualt Grand Espace. Renualt espace diesels get a v bad press - engines fall to bits - see HJ in DT today, plus HJ car by car breakdown etc etc etc Has anyone any exp of the renault 3.0 petrol as in the Espace? I do less than 8,000 miles pa, so fuel consumption not a big prob, plus a always worry about diesel pumps and turbos on out of warnantee 3 yo diesels. -
Mitsubishi Brakes 6 May 2003 (Forum)
Any other ideas about what might cause it? Is it likely to be covered by the warranty? (website says discs/pads excluded) Car by car breakdown refers to brake recall (as dealer demo, presumably work completed) but to reduced brake efficency. Still stops, but vibrates. -
Toyota Corolla Valuation? 12 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I'm thinking of buying a 1991 (H plate) Toyota Corolla 1.3GL 5 door estate in good condition, 75000 miles and a Toyota dealer service history. Two questions: (1) Should I? I understand it's a reliable model and HJ's car by car breakdown doesn't show up any nasties other than a vulnerability to rust. (2) How much should I offer? Parkers website indicates £640-£780 for a vehicle in good to A1 condition. This is lower than I had expected (which is good for me I guess). -
Fiesta gear-box mountings 28 Feb 2002 (Forum)
., fron replaced by main dealer she asked if this could be the reason but they said might have contributed but the fault was commonly due to just wear. This is news to me and HJs car-by-car breakdown doesn't mention it for the Fiesta. Can anyone confirm that this is the case for Fiestas? Is it even part of the MOT/DoT testing procedure? Many thanks in advance Dave Y -
Mondeo fan heater - the cost! 22 Jan 2002 (Forum)
I proposed Fords reported 'good-will gestures' but was told 'not on a 68,000 miler over 4 years old'. As the old saying goes 'smile and pay up!' This is referred to on HJ's car by car breakdown - so, when considering a used Mondeo, it's well worth checking the heater fan speed switch - something easily overlooked. BigAl -
Audi A2 8 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Took the Lupo in for a service this morning and drove away in an Audi A2 1.4 TDI. courtesy car. Cor, it don't half shift! Thinking I was doing about 50 I glanced down at the speedo and saw an indicated 80 (on a private road of course). HJ's car by car breakdown has it as a three cylinder, you'd never believe it the way it drives. -
Mercedes E220 Diesel Auto (2002) - Loss of power 14 Jul 2017 (Forum)
, Engine running OK,but unable to drive forward or reverse, clearly something has gone. its pushed into a bay and is fine . I have breakdown insurance but like to fathom out a few ideas/suggestions from anyone before proceeding, thanks, Brian. -
Renault Laguna - 130% increase from AA - stick to the RAC 23 Jun 2014 (Forum)
I rang them up and they gave a £60 discount. WOW. A huge increase and they didn't even pay for my breakdown repair to my turbo or even when cooler pipe blew. I think they are trying to get rid of cars older than 10 years old. I would not recommend the AA at all. Even the CEO of the AA is not interested. -
Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 3.0 CDTi Auto. Elite. Buying advice please 2 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I'm tempted to get the above car. havent decided on hatch or estate though yet. how much should i be looking to spend on an 06/07 plate max 3 yrs old with under 45k on the clock. does any one know the real world fuel figures for a big deisel auto like this. ive read the cbc breakdown but i really need advice about price and fuel consumption as well as anything not covered by the cbcb -
Peugeot 406 1.8 speedo problem 22 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I understand that speedo heads and instrument pods on the 2.1 turbo diesels can give problems (i looked on HJ's Car breakdown section) but I would like to know if this problem affects the early petrol engined models? Thanks, Andrew
