replacing broken glass - CM
My 1996 Audi A4 Avant got broken into at 4am Wednesday morning and as I heard/saw it happening I got up to sort it out. I called one company (who used to sponsor a Premiership footbal team) to see if they could help but as they had no glass I called one of the major breakdown services (who do not advertise on this site) to see if they could sort it out. They were helpful and said that they had no glass in stock but would come down and put some perspex in temporarily. They arrived at 6am and did a good job. I was expecting the glass to be fitted that day when the offices opened.

I called up yesterday morning and was told that the glass was out of stock but would arrive today. Of course it didn't and it is now booked in for tomorrow at 5.30pm, more than 60 hours since I first called. Is this a record? Of the 5 or 6 times that I have been broken into I have always had the glass replaced within a few hours.

I got bored with the breakdown service so called the football sponsors who said that they would call within 2 hours. Of course they didn't so am giving up on them and never going to use them again (as they have done this to me before).

As they charge over £200 to the insurance company, I think a better standard of service could be given. Or am I being unrealistic in expecting the glass to be replaced within a few hours (afterall an Audi A4 is not an out of the ordinary car!)?

Sorry for the winge but just really annoyed by the inconvenience (especially as I was wanting to go away tomorrow evening).

Not that I want to rub it in CM but about a month ago, my Fiesta got broken into at work in broad daylight so I went home early, opened the yellow pages, picked a random advert and went down. The guy hoovered out the car, put the new glass in and polished it and I left. Car got broken into at 11:30, was parked up at home with a window replaced by 1pm.

I do understand though that an A4 is more exclusive than a Fiesta!

try upgrading the perspex to "lexon", its virtually bullet-proof, and you can have a laugh as toe-rags half-brick bounces back and puts his lights out. :-)

Very loose motoring related post - in fact, NON MOTORING RELATED but a few years back, a well known company had very strong perpsex for windows (may have been "Lexon" I dont' know) but some little git tried to break in and threw a whole brick. Naturally it bounced back, set the alarms off and knocked the toerag unconscious. Police arrive and arrest him but he sued the company. Don't know if he won but I'd pay a lot to see CCTV footage of that!

Couple of years back I took the Scenic to Amsterdam. There some druggie scrout smashed the side window to steal an empty packet of fags. Autoglass in holland didnt have a window so they put in a temporary plexiglass ( and phoned the uk to get it authorised - so I didnt pay)

Anyway back in the uk it took three days to get a window and fit it. Good job done so I didnt have a problem.

So last year I took the Laguna to Amsterdam, and wary of the last time, parked it in an expensive underground car park. On return to the uk, on the first wash I find 4 - yes 4 - centre punch marks in the rear passenger window. Someone has had a go at it with an auto punch and failed to break the glass. Must be good glass.

Tell me where you park, so that I can avoid that area!

In all my 48 years of car ownership the only time I've had a car tampered with was in about 1968 (before the days of locking petrol caps) when I had about 2 gallons of petrol siphoned out at a stock car meeting.

Have I been lucky, or is it down to my being careful where I park?

Charming. I thought I lived in the crime-ridden Third World. after reading the above I'm rather glad I do and don't own a car in GREAT Britain........

The only time I have ever been a victim of car crime was when I had two cassettes nicked from my Mini 850 during an 18th birthday party at the Cornwall Coluseam. That was in 1985.

I guess I've just been ucky too.

We don't need armed guards at petrol stations though! Like a previous poster, I've never had a car tampered with, never had a house break-in, never been mugged. Yeah, it is pretty GREAT here.

Hmm, maybe I should touch wood and get a rabbit's foot after that post.

i always thought perspex was not allowed to be used to replace glass even as a temperary measure,i replaced my vauxhall cheveete,s glass with perspex years ago ,on the way to have it replaced with glass,i got stopped by a really nice motorcycle cop and he told me about this, also just asked my mate, and he said no bs mark or kite mark then dont put it in ,and he also said the same about perspex, big no no he said loudly.on the subject of windows companies, football sponsors told me the same and that was with a 405windscreen,i found a certain 3 lettered car rescue company the best and cheapest at 110 quid inc vat and brillant quick service for my 405 ,i found them brillant.
