• Mitsubishi Outlander 2.0 Diesel 2008 08 reg - Steering Problem advise, cannot seem to resolve 11 Jun 2016 (Forum)
      So far the car has been into two garages and I have spent circa £800 on Tyres, Track rod ends, brake callipers, brake pads, drop links , a front wheel bearing and on two occasions full four wheel alignment. Both garages have no further idea on what is causing this. It has a new MOT and no broken springs or leaking shockers visible and no accident damage repairs visible.     Does anyone have any experience of this?

  My daughters car has been making this noise for about a month,& it's so loud pedestrians look & stare. 2 weeks ago,it went in to Seat main dealer to have gearbox oil changed from synthetic to mineral. ( Global recall,it seems) She told them about the noise & they handed back the car ,saying it was ok.Needless to say,it isn't. A few days ago,it was fitted with a new set of tyres & had 4 wheel alignment check. I asked for the wheel bearing to be checked,& all was fine. I have since been to another independant garage who road tested it on a recently re-surfaced main road (there's a rarity),& the tech reckons it's a problem with 2nd gear?

• VW Golf Mk2 1.6 /Polo - Gearchange bushes etc refurb 12 Sep 2010 (Forum)
  Can any body tell me if I can withdraw the relay shaft upwards after just removing the clip on the bottom of the shaft. This saves dismantling the clamp etc on the rod and losing all alignment. Should turn it into a nice quick job? I have posted it as a Golf on the basis that there are very few Cordobas about! It appears that all sorts of things were fitted at around this date - most Polos were cable operated gearchange.

  It also has a bit of a clunk when disengaging the clutch and a rattling when turning on full lock (unfortunately not noticed when testing). I'm going to get the wheel balance and alignment checked tonight but think there may be something more serious going on. Has anyone else had similar problems or have any ideas what could be up with it?? Thanks Olly

  If I were to let go of the steering wheel, I estimate it would change lanes in approx 10 sec at 50mph (not that I'd do that on the motorway). Anyway, I was obviously concerned so I had the wheel alignment checked and adjusted (one wheel was off by 1 degree, I have a printout with old and new measurements). Situation has since vastly improved, but a minor pull is still there (would probably change lanes in about 20 secs).

  I'm still investigating the slight steering pull my car has to the right. Car has new wishbones, and new tie rod ball joints, 4-wheels aligned and has just passed its annual MOT. My suspicion regarding the steering pull is currently on the steering rack. I notice that when I rock the steering with engine turned off (car has power steering) I get a slight knock-knock sound (as if there is some play).

  I think this is wrong and it means the mounting bolts, which hold the brackets on. The pivot bolts have to come out to replace the bushes, and alignment of the pivot bolts isn't possible as far as I can see. Any advice would be much appreciated before I start dismantling my car and regret it! Nick.

    Nobody contacted me and I decided to take the car to an independent tracking specialist. The wheel alignment job print out clearly shows that the car's tracking was off.  This was not the only problem with my brand new car.  Here is full list of faults: 1.    Bad wheel alignment and tracking causing the vehicle to constantly pull to the left 2.

  Is this normal behaviour? Do I need to worry about? I search Internet and some recommend 4 wheel alignment for self centre problem. Shall I go to Suzuki dealer for this or independent garage?  This is the first car and need some advices

    Now, I'm having about 20% worse MPG...!!! I have checked the wheel alignment in a professional shop with lasers and stuff, and checked all the brakes, they are not dragging. The MPG drop happened precisely after the wheel change, and I calculate using the pump figures and odometer, not the trip computer.

  Looking online it seems fairly uncommon for wheel bearings to need replacing, and there seems to be some conclusion about it potentially arising from bad shocks, or bad alignment. Should I fight back with the garage about this?
• Ford Fiesta - failed MOT questions 22 Jul 2017 (Forum)
  The garage told me that after replacing the linkage, they would need to strip down and rebuild the entire suspension system and re align the steering too. WTF!! I was quoted an hour's labour when I thought mine had gone in March this year. (I also have a Fiesta). With a couple of hours labour, I make it about £250? Garage has quoted almost £800!!
• Volkswagen Golf III - No compression @ cyl1 & 4 after wp/cambelt change 2 Feb 2013 (Forum)
  The car is a Golf MK3 1.6 ABU engine (year:93) What we have done: Drove the (working and functiong) car into the garage and turned it of. Aligned the markings on the camshaft and crankshaft. Replaced the old waterpump and cambelt with the new parts. (the wp works as the tensioner on this model) After putting everything back on the car starts with the gas pedal on 50-75% Everything should work but it doesn´t We have re-checked everything like 10-15 times and it should be working, cam/crank at its markings makes the no 1 cylinder to be on the upper offset and the cam on offset för cyl 1.

  How I came to look at the drive shaft, is that at 50mph the whole car would shake quite bad...it wasn't coming through the steering. I did the usual,  wheel balancing, and home made alignment with 2 jacks and a piece of string (again Youtube...it's taught me all I know tbh :) ) The car sits low at the back, probably needs 2 shocks, and the passenger side rear wheel is starting to bend inwards, which is because of a rubber on the axle on the back.

  The problem that I have is that I have never worked on a Vauxhall/Bedford diesel before and am working on memory from Ford diesel vehicles of the same type of period. I tend to remember that after aligning the timing marks on the pump sprocket and timing cover which I have done, I need to set the pistons at TDC before engaging in any further dismantlement of the pump. On the Ford models there is a screw plug where one can insert a pin in order to turn the engine until TDC is attained.

  I'll have a chat with them tomorrow but would like to know a bit more about what I'm talking about.... A quick 'tinternet serach provides links to mis-aligned gear linkages, dragging clutches and top-up of clutch hydraulic/gearbox fluid. TIA.

  The front tyres still had 50% of their original depth over 85-90% of the surface. The dealer told me I would need a 'KDS alignment' to sort this which cost nearly £300. 14k miles later again scrubbed all 4 inside edges, again the dealer told me a 'KDS allignment' would solve this. He appeared shocked when told the car had already had one.

  so a weekend late ri removed the head a second time and yes found 4 bent valves! how did this happen i wonder? before i refit all is the correct procedure to align top and bottom timing marks, put on bottom pully/crank ,lock the flywheel, then tighten the pully crank bolt ,then put on cambelt? alline top on camshaft sprocket, then turn engine by hand with socket on camshaft and then just hope for the best?
