  • Nova - noisy diff 18 Aug 2003 (Forum)
However on investigation it seems the differential is on it way out. I\'ve put the car on axle stands and found excessive lateral play in both drive shafts (at the gear box end), also when the car is run in gear (on the axle stands)a noticable humming noise eminates from the gearbox which increases with speed in any gaer. Can anyone please advise what my options are, including approx costs and whether it is safe to drive the car.
  • Jaguar S-type misfiring 13 Aug 2003 (Forum)
The fuel used is Esso 95 regular. Is my problem due to the urban driving causing a 'coking up' or does it indicate a more serious problem?
  • Insurance Query 12 Aug 2003 (Forum)
The Nissan is in my name and is insured by me (fully comp), with her as a named driver. Trouble is, she hardly ever drives the Seat and prefers the Nissan. Therefore, the kiddies seats and all related clobber is permanently in the Nissan, and I drive the Seat. In reality, the Seat ought to be registered and insured by me, and the Nissan registered and insured by Mrs Joe.

And what do the professional instructors think? Do you sometimes simply tell a 'pupil': "You are just not capable of safely driving a motor vehicle. Take the bus."?

Going down country lanes here comes another overtaking everything in sight, i'm not trying to say they drive unsafe, they just overtake everything. Do some cars make you fall asleep and others make you drive like Fangio?
  • Ford Mondeo Zetec Estate 2.0l- litre 18 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I am seriously considering buying a Mondeo Estate registered in January 2000. It has 112,000 miles on the clock and is going for £3,995. We have had a good test-drive and the car seems to be immaculate. There is a full service history available and the car has been regularly serviced at the proper intervals by a Ford dealer. It drives beautifully and is incredibly quiet - not even a tiny rattle to be heard.
  • Mitsubishi Brakes 6 May 2003 (Forum)
Braking from speed now produces noticeable vibration. I drove it last weekend: she doesn't normally drive in a manner to notice this, I got it to do it twice. Yesterday she was on a longer drive and had to decelarate quickly, and noticed it. I thought warped discs (why?) She's taking it to local main agent.

  • What really gets up my nose is ... 22 Jan 2003 (Forum)
What winds you up most about driving & other motorists and what if anything can/should be done about it ? My pet hates (in no particular order of priority) are: - Drivers who don't indicate, - tailgaters, - bull-bars, - double parking, - middle lane hogs, - serial speeders, and finally....., those drivers who, when faced with pedestrians ahead waiting to cross the road in the pouring rain or fellow motorists trying to exit a junction and either a) deliberately drive just fast enough to stop them doing so but just slow enough to maximise their agony !

  • Moral dilemma 12 Dec 2002 (Forum)
(i.e a blind exit on to a road at speed) What do you do? Can you do anything? I'm sure this idiot is going to kill someone with their driving, as well as their car being a danger due to its condition. But is it best not to do anything and leave them to it?
  • Accident rate vs. number of tests 28 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I've had a pretty thorough trawl about online but haven't turned-up any accident stats set against number of driving tests taken. I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give on this as it might help to restore her confidence. Thanks
  • Contact lenses/Glasses 1 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Which are the best for driving ? I have used glasses for reading/TV and computer( i.e close-up) work for many years but recently when doing long distance driving (not wearing glasses) my eyes feel tired and strained. I'm trying to decide whether to go for new glasses or contact lenses - which i have no experience with.

  • Calculating top gear performance? 28 May 2002 (Forum)
Maths is not my strongpoint so I need some guidance on how to work out which gear ratio/final drive combination is likely to be the most long-legged when looking at a particular car on paper. These vary between versions of the same car, particularly, of course, when automatics are brought into the equation.
