...before you can be issued with a competition licence, what happens now?

During the British round of the World Rally Championship, some of the top names in the sport were caught breaking the prevailing speed limit on public roads between special stages.

British licence holders Colin Rae and Richard Burns are included, the latter racking up five separate offences.

Yes, loads of spectators were caught too, but It'll be interesting to see whether the team managers let law run its' course, or more likely, engage some high powered briefs to put up a fight.

If rally drivers are caught speeding on public roads then, yes, they should be prosecuted.

A few years ago, when the good old Lombard RAC Rally was held predominantly in Cumbria, I was nearly killed by a speeding competitor who was travelling between stages - he was doing probably in excess of 100mph on a single track country lane.

rally drivers may thibk they are the gods of the road, but they got caught speeding fair and square....If that amounts to them getting banned, then so be it.

"Schwarz's lawyer Glenda Owen said he faced disqualification from driving on the points "totting up" procedure.

"Disqualification would lead to exceptional hardship for himself and the Hyundai team he drives for," she told the court."

YEAH RIGHT!

The FIA have announced that the loss of the road licence will not mean enough to disqualify a driver from the competition. Just that they cannot drive on the road sections. WHAT?!?

That is in complete contravention to my understanding of the rules in general, the SSR's and ASR's of the event in particular.

Of the top ecehelon caught by.... guess who..... our old friends South Wales Police (hello Toad!!!!)...... the only driver to put his hands up so far is Armin Schwarz. Freddy Loix got nabbed 7 times.

Now whilst I've heard all the arguments pro/anti speed traps a gazillion times and its all rather tedious here we have an interesting situation.

Presumably when faced with organic enforcement one gets the opportunity to receive feedback, including anything from a ticking off to a summons, and therefore mend one's ways. Just as yours truly modified my behaviour after a close shave with N Wales finest many many moons ago.[1]

However here we have a situation where individuals could, in theory, lose their livelihoods without the feedback and opportunity to mend their behaviour.

Sensible discussion...... purrlease!

[1] running late, held up by spectator traffic on the Welsh loop, following Sandro Munari in his Stratos on the wrong(ish) side of the road to get to service when m/cycle plod indicated he was desirous of a word in our shell likes. Fortunately Jones the Plod spoke no Italian and in his bemusement let us off too. Not bragging, not proud, but a lesson well learnt. Just for the record if a prosecution and conviction had followed would have meant exclusion.

I'm sorry but if the law says a speed limit and you get done breaking it 5 times in a day and you lose your licence .. tough. Presumably the offenders gained an advantage by speeding and knew the law.

I have NO sympathy.. they took risks breaking the law hoping to win £ss.. Tough if they got caught..
