  I have a 2004 2.0 diesel Jaguar x type with 87 thousand miles. it has a problem picking up speed, misfires, has intermittant pinking noise with puffs of black smoke, may be a coincidance but I now notice there is engine oil all over the cooling fans, I did not notice the oil when the problem started, I have removed the egr, inlet manifold, and the hose under the egr & pressure washed untill spotless, I also cleaned the inlet ports to no avail

  I had a major service carried out a the local Ford dealership 2 days and 25 miles ago. On inspecting the oil this afternoon, I found it to be black and pretty dirty looking. Is this to be expected in a low mileage diesel so soon after a major service? Any advice appreciated.

  Under heavy acceleration sudden puffs of black smoke. I have traced oil in the air inlet manifold- presumably being pushed up after the turbo. There is also some oil in the rocker box to turbo breather. Can I remove the breather pipe, plug it and let the rocker breather vent to air to double check that the oil is coming from the turbo and not the rocker box ??

  I recently bought a Volvo S40 2.0 Diesel with 49k on the clock and a full Volvo service history.  It was last serviced at 46k but the oil does look very black; though I know this is not uncommon with diesels.It's done 50k miles now.

  Just covered 1000 eventfree miles in my Yaris and thought I had better check the oil. Apart from the fact that it was still on the full mark, I was amazed to see that it had not discoloured at all. I am sure the colour of the oil is identical to the day that it was put in. I would have thought it would have had a little bit of black in it, but, nothing.

  I have also replaced the air filter. My engine does not use oil, and I am inclined to think it is a diesel problem. Can anyone offer some suggestions?

  I am not convinced the garage has done much at all as they had it for not much longer than an hour. I popped the bonnet and had a cursory look at the oil on the dip stick. It is black, thin and dirty so I took it back to the garage to discuss. They said because it is a diesel the engine retains a large amount of dirt and as soon as the new oil circulates it picks up the remnants and changes to black.

  Focus TDCI 1.8 turbo diesel(2003) Car not near as powerfull as it used to be and putting out a lot of black smoke even at low revs, car quite sore on fuel. Have checked the K and N air filter and it is clean car burning a small amount of engine oil but very little!

  how do you weaken pump so that it is not smoking so much have back pump timing of it is better but still a bit to much starts very well from cold no smoke and runs smoth straight from start but smokes a lot when on throttle it is diesel not oil and black

  They also noticed that the dipstick always seemed to have oil on it even when the sump was drained (the oil is disgustingly black). They recommended a oil flush to clear this excessive deposit away. Is this worthwhile or have a got a serious problem? Thanks Chris

  I need help on this I am not technically minded I want to know if this could happen to a diesel at such a young age after I always have it serviced regularly - there was a problem with the oil warning indicator and I have a strong reason to believe the mechanic removed the oil warning light wire as after I had it serviced the oil warning light kept coming which I told him about ut before I went on the trip he assured me he had rectified this.

  Anyway, as usual I immediately changed all the fluids, including engine oil, which seemed to get black very quick. Now I have the manual I realise that although the engine's first fill is 5.3litre you can only drain 4.8litre out, no matter how much I tilt it and how long I leave it to drain.

    It embarrassed me by doing it whilst on the ramp for the last MOT and the guy refused to continue the test after it filled his workshop with acrid diesel fumes! He did hear the clunk though, as the bonnet was up, & he started looking around the nearside area of the engine bay as it sounded like it came from there. I initially thought turbo but that's on the offside and it does seem to be fuel burning rather than oil.

  My Citroen ZX 1.9 (Non turbo) Diesel has a strong smell of Diesel fumes at the exhaust (a lot stronger smell than normal - and most other diesels produce). The car runs fine and does not produce any black or grey smoke when accelerating.

  On the back of the engine on my 97 Vectra diesel,there seems to be a black valve of some sort,that is inline on the water system,to the heater.It also has a small black push on pipe,much like a vacuum pipe on an old carburettor engine. This seems to have a small leak,but I think under pressure,and the faster the engine runs,it is obviously losing more water,as the level in my header tank can go down,even if I've filled it up.There's no water in the oil,so the head gasket would appear to be ok,and I think it possibly unlikely the head could be cracked,so this may be the culprit.
