  • Cost of pushbike tyres 13 May 2007 (Forum)
I thought SWMBO's bike looked like it could do with a new tyre. Twenty quid! I can buy some car tyres for less than that. What's going on? It's only a 700 X 35. The last one I bought cost about a fiver IIRC, a Michelin World Tour. It seems they're no longer available. It's a plain old bike, she doesn't want to ride it up any mountains (even if there were any within a hundred miles), just on roads and cycle tracks.
  • Battery condition and engine performance 24 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Last week I had to replace the original nine and a half year old battery on the Mondeo. Starting had become more laboured until, one morning after a frost, the battery couldn't turn the engine over at all. The car seemed to go better with the new battery and I thought it must be psychological, but I've just filled the tank again and achieved 40.12 mpg on the last tankful in mixed motoring conditions.
  • Clicking from steering wheel (mazda6) 21 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Hi, I had a clicking coming from the steering wheel, sounded like something in the auto cancel mechnism was broken. The car is about a year old and the switch assembly was changed (indicator, washer etc..). Well a few months later the problem has returned, its booked in but any ideas? Why does it keep doing it? It sounds like a spring has done and some bit of plastic is catching.

  • Oddly located fuel filler caps 18 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Can anyone help settle a discussion at work? I mentioned my dad's old Simca that had a numberplate mounted filler cap, and a colleague mentioned that; when he used to be a petrol pump attendant, he once couldn't find the filler cap on a car. He's unsure if it was a Humber or a Hunter.

  • Corsa losing power. 9 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Sister has a manual Corsa 1.2 MPI just over a year old. She says that she is noticing a marked reduction in power now, from when the car was new. On a local hill, she now has to go down to a lower gear to climb it, than was the case before. Everything else works as it should, though the engine sounds a little more " lumpy " than it did.
  • Daddy's little helper 22 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I asked my 4 year old daughter to help me clean the car over the weekend. She obvioulsy got bored with doing that and managed to reach up and get hold of my oil can and proceeded to empty the contents in the front and rear brakes soaking all the pads and discs in engine oil.
  • Drag 20 Sep 2006 (Forum)
(Subject of thread changed from "The Unbelievable HJ Column" to "Drag") Some of you will have read the HJ column in the Telegraph http://tinyurl.com/hjyzx in which a reader tells of the improvement in fuel consumption achieved by putting mountain bikes inside the car rather than on a bike rack. A physics teacher at the local school read this to a class, as a practical example of the importance of reducing the coefficient of drag. One 16 year old boy absolutely refused to believe that this was true, on the grounds that a) no one would write to a newspaper on such a topic, and b) no motorist would ever think of doing such a comparison.
  • 1999 Toyota Starlet 1.3 11 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I am about to buy a car to teach my 17 year old daughter to drive in. Her mum has happy memories of learning in a Toyota Starlet 20 years ago. Our neighbour is selling her immaculate 1999 5 door 1300 with 79,000 miles for £1500.
  • UK Vehicle Insurance Abroad 22 Feb 2006 (Forum)
My UK car insurance certificate with MMA is entirely in English. No green card can be issued or necessary now apparently for EU. Asked my broker was this normal and they said situation was the same for all companies they deal with.
  • Failed gearbox in VW Golf 8 Feb 2006 (Forum)
The car had only done 29,440 miles at the time - VW say that the fault developed now, we say it was a manufacturing fault Has anyone else heard of this happening?

  • Cheap turbocharger (any make) 9 May 2005 (Forum)
I'm planning to build a DIY jet turbine engine this summer in the break from Uni, and while it's a fundamentally simple concept I'm assuming that picking up a turbo in relatively good condition for a low price is going to be difficult. I'm not averse to taking a toolkit to a scrapyard and pulling one off an old car, until I've got it off will have no idea of it's condition. Is there anywhere that takes turbos that while in good condition have no use and would be willing to flog one on cheap to me?
  • room with a view 8 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I particularly resent (as a driver) high rear screen sills, e.g. Seat Leon, which make reversing more hazardous. Which other cars suffer in this way?
