  • Volkswagen Golf GT TDi IV Mk 4 - Rough Idle? 1 Jun 2012 (Forum)
It didn't help that at the time the car was running properly so he said he wasn't sure what's wrong. Could it be the fuel injectors being faulty? I always get fuel from Shell and thought they had good diesel. Please can someone give me some advice? Thank you.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C - Vectra C In Limp Mode 10 Feb 2012 (Forum)
The engine Management light came on and the car went into Limp Mode on my Vectra whilst I was driving it. I took it round to a garage who suspected I had filled up with bad fuel. They changed my Fuel Filter which made no difference. They then told me that my Inlet Manifold needed changing, which they did and it made no difference. They put it on the diagnostic machine which flagged up Crankshaft Sensor, but the garage told me my car doesnt have one?

  • vauxhall vectra c - hesitation and rough running 8 Jun 2011 (Forum)
I havent had the car that long so im sure of the exact maintenance record (no receipts) although the service book is fully stamped by independant gararges. The reason i say this is because i have feeling its a fuel problem and can find no evidance of the fuel filter ever being changed. Am i going down the wrong road? maybe something more sinister! :( Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance.
  • Peugeot 406 Hdi 2.2 - Min level additive gasoil alarm 5 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Hi there, I was wondering if someone could help me fix this issue. When I start the car I get 2-3 alarms, first one is 'Fuel cap open', the 2nd one is 'Min level additive gasoil' and the third one which appears randomly is something along the lines of 'Clean Diesel Filter'. Someone I know recommended me a mechanic, he said he replaced the fuel tank but this did resolve the 1st alarm, He also got the additive and replaced it & put in a new filter but that also didn't work even though we drove the car constantly at 60 mph for 20 mins (apparently that should regenerated the FAP and clear the alarm).
  • The life and times of the humble glowplug... 27 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Do you reckon that modern glow plugs in a modern engine that will probably start (eventually) in most conditions without their use, will last longer than in old IDI applications, where they were needed a lot, but perhaps didn't stay on after the engine had fired? Will modern fuel injection systems and the quality of the fuel also contribute to a longer life for the modern glowplug...?
  • Ford Fiesta (2009 - ) - Miles per gallon 26 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I have been driving a fiesta 1.6 diesel (company car) for 8 months now and although quite happy with it I am a tad annoyed by the fuel consumption. The technical spec mentions that anything up to nearly 70 to the gallone can be achieved and indeed it must have impressed someone enough to let it off with 35 quid road tax.
  • Citroen XM (1990 - 2000) - 96 2.1 td fuel injection problem 22 Jul 2008 (Forum)

  • Tyre experiment over.. 27 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Tyre wear........... Punto 1.9D, heavy old `gasper` of an indirect injection diesel. Heavy on front the front end, especially if `thrown` into corners and roudabouts by SWMBO. So badly abused on corners that the first 2 front sets did only around 7,500 miles. Pirelli standard fitment `eco tyres` ( something like that)..

  • VW Passat S TDi PD (130) Auto 25 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I have recently purchased a: VW Passat S TDi PD (130) Automatic 2005 (05) which has covered just 11000 miles. My question is with regards to Fuel Economy, I have the computer on board which works out the MPG whilst driving and on average until reset at every refill. This car is driven 75% around town and 25% on a run and only seems to be returning 320 miles to a full tank of diesel (last fill up was 54.00 litres) and the computer works it out to be an average of only 30 'ish MPG and 320 miles covered - seems a tad low to me ??
  • Security suggestions for yard 7 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Had the diesel siphoned out of the four 7.5t lorries in our yard again in the early hours of today. Two of them have 100 litre tanks, one is 120 litre, one is 150 litre. So that's £350 worth. Just like last week.
  • VW/skoda 1.4 16V engine - chipped back? 16 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I run a skoda Octavia 1.4 16V (75bhp - engine also fitted to Polos, Golfs, Leons etc.. ) purchased to perform a high mileage commute cheaply, safely and quietly (I thought the diesel was very noisy when at crawling pace in traffic). It was not purchased for performance. The car has been superb with no problems at all , fuel economy is superb usually 45mpg + . Only once has it ever dipped below 40 mpg and that was when I explored the pyrenees and it still averaged 38.
  • Holiday Hire Cars 29 Aug 2002 (Forum)
After the surprise of it's arrival and my initial fears about having a long journey ahead of us and WILL IT GET US THERE.... I then spotted we had the new 1.5 common rail diesel dCi model and my interest was roused. The highlight had to be traveling for extended periods with no discernible movement from the fuel gauge. My wife who did most of the driving (while I was sampling the local alcoholic beverages) has a rather heavy right foot, but we still achieved nearly 60mpg.
  • DPF Filters - Just how bad are they? 14 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Obviously this is going to begin to clog up a DPF pretty quickly. But .. It's also going to cost me a fair chunk of cash in fuel if I choose to run a 2.0 a CRV petrol though. I get the impresssion that I would need to take the car (assuming I was to buy a DPF diesel of course) for a good blast up the motorway in order to give the DPF chance to clear (which is fine so long as it's guaranteed to do the trick) but does anyone have any clue with regard to how often and how long for?

  • Chevrolet Epica - Chevrolet Epica diesel 1 year on 12 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Aug 2010, searching for a fairly economical to buy new-newish car, looked at brand new kia ceed, then saw hyundai i30 classics a lot cheaper and went to look at a car supermarket (Ron Skinners) where i had previously bought a chevrolet aveo for an old friend. saw the epica in stock, all ex-chevrolet cars in lovely condition and a very attractive price. went home and researched a bit, and found my car for £6745 at Pentagon, Sheffield, 7021 miles on clock when i bought car over the phone, bit disappointed at the time about the condition the car was delivered in, but faults fixed under warranty and dealer service in swansea (FRF) excellent. (PS, Pentagon, you ARE forgiven) Fuel economy has averaged around 40mpg (big heavy car) and better than 45mpg motorways to london, which we do once a month. 2nd year service cost at vauxhall network Q here in carmarthen extremely well carried out, and cost just  £99 inc vat + parts +oil total was about £217 oil. air and fuel filters all changed, and brake fluid changed too. car left spotlessly clean too!

  • Ford Focus III 2.0tdci ghia - intermittent loss of power 16 Nov 2013 (Forum)
My major concern is that someone may drive into me when this fault occurs as nearly happened on the M8. it has been back to the local ford dealership, (evans halshaw, edinburgh) where they kept the car for a few days, was taken on an extensive road test, everything was "ok",diagnostic testing showed no fault codes. one of the senior techs questioned the type of fuel used,a fuel sample was taken and was given the all clear, the fuel filter was replaced, engine recoded all at a cost to me,the problem still remains. they have suggested that i shouldnt use cheap forecourt fuel, ie tescos etc, i have since switched to Shell. the problem is still there. the car has been back in since then and now they say the fuel is contaminated, which i take exception to, as i have never filled my car with anything other than diesel. i have asked how this may have happened. they have suggested 2 ways. either the car has run dry, picking up the debris from the bottom of the tank, this has never happened or when i have refueled my car the pump that i have used may have been running low and the gunk from the bottom of that may have entered my tank. both of these i think are far fetched. each time a diagnostic test has been run i am charged as no fault is found. even before they claimed my fuel was contaminated there was a fault, it has undergone the same diagnostic testing each time, so how they have decided this all of a sudden is beyond me.
