Audi Auto Gearboxes

I might buy an Audi A4 1.8T or 2.0T, or an A6 2.7 diesel. There seem to be a bewildering array of auto boxes available!

Am I right in saying the Multironic is CVT type box with good economy and performance to match a manual? Any issue with this box? Is it any good long term?
The Tiptronic seems to be a conevtional torque converter based box, I assume with fuel consumption penaties?
Is a DSG box available? If so when did it come in?

Many thanks.

Lots of problems with Multitronic CVTs over the years. But they have got much better, and are very good to drive.
