Shock horror! - car failed its MoT £800 for DRL 4 Jun 2018 (Forum)
My 2012 car failed its MoT due to a faulty DRL - is this right? A couple of days ago my 2012 BMW 520d failed its MoT due to O/S DRL not working. The dipped and high beams worked fine. It cost me almost £800 to change the whole headlight and the DRL module to pass the MoT. They quoted 4.2.1(a) for the failure summary is as below Repair immediately (major defects): Offside Front Position lamp not working (4.2.1 (a)) Are they right to do that as my understanding is that DRL rule has changed just last month and only apply on new cars and effectively applicable from 2021. -
All makes - The future of Company Cars 15 Jun 2017 (Forum)
with all the major manufacturers including Toyota, Lexus, BMW etc leading the way with petrol hybrid models it's interesting to learn that the company car users are reluctant to have their diesels taken off them. Unless you are a city trader living in Maidenhead and travelling to the city wher a hybrid is ideal, the average rep may prefer the certainty of a diesel starting without charging , having a great range and only needs filling up once or twice a week , instead of three times with a large petrol. -
Skoda Octavia Estate - Which way to go? Octavia v 3 series v Mazda 6 5 Oct 2016 (Forum)
I am unsure which way to go between: Skoda Octavia Estate circa 2011/2012 with approx 60k miles (1.4tsi or 1.8tsi) BMW 3 Series Touring circa 2008 with approx 60-70k miles (318 / 320) Mazda 6 Estate circa 2010 with approx 60-70k miles (2.0) All would be petrol engines as not enough miles and the wrong kind of trips to consider diesel. -
Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate - Best used premium estate for £15k 19 Jun 2016 (Forum)
I would really love to get some performance out of what I choose, also try and get some decent MPG as I travel 40 miles each day for work. So far I have looked at ~2010/2011 C350D, A6 Avant Quattro 3.0, A6 Avant allroad, BMW 325d. If anyone could give me ideas on which would be the best I would be so grateful, which has the least issues/running costs etc? Thanks, Nick =] -
MINI Cooper + Cooper S - EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION 28 Apr 2016 (Forum)
There is no sign of an oil leak or oil in the exhaust emissions. Has anyone heard of such a problem with MINI or any other BMW engines? -

cant decide between 328i and 330d 21 Feb 2015 (Forum)
But I can't decide between them on divring experience. I do around 10k miles per year, mostly motorway. I'd been told that BMW petrols have weaker resilduals but I wonder if that will change with the current climate on diesel bashing and also the move to a more economical 4 cyclinder turbo petrol over the older thirstier 6 cylinder petrols. -
Seat Leon - Seat Leon 2010 1.4 TSI - Best for Luxury Not Sport 28 Jan 2015 (Forum)
Hi Soon I'm going to get rid of my BMW 1 Series 2006 120i Sport as the ride is just too harsh. I've looked at the Golf TSI Match but think the Leon looks better and still has the 1.4 TSI Engine. However what I can't work out is 1) Which Leon 1.4 TSI Trim Level comes with the most luxury items so that its like the Golf Match rather than Sporty (i.e. -

MINI Cooper Countryman - Fussy auto gearbox / V-Fuel 23 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Noisy, fussy, and possibly uneconomical, progress unless constantly working gearchange. Hardly the point of auto, and this is my 5th (2 Volvos, Mercedes and BMW). Dealer and MINI UK not too interested so in desperation I brimmed tank (always use non-supermarket fuel) from 7/8ths empty with Shell V-Power. Almost immediate improvement to auto behaving close to expectation, far less fussy, smoother, more responsive to driver inputs. -
What car - Buying a car 5 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Is there any particular car that suits my needs I am tired of looking and I either find high mileage BMW,audi ,vw or less mileage polo's I love the big brand cars as everyone but is it worth checking those cars for pint of money and my needs so I am just going to rely on your expert advise to tell me which car to buy and of what age and mileage. -
E46 Coupe - water in fuse box and footwell 27 Oct 2013 (Forum)
The car doesn't have a sunroof - Googling shows a lot of people get leaky sunroof drains. The windscreen appears to be original as it has 'BMW' on it at the bottom. -
2008 Peugeot 308 - 'Expert advice' Peugeot 308 cambelt life 13 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Modern cam belts are tough enough to last the life of the engine unless one of the things it drives seizes. The 15yr old 129,000m one on my Audi still looks large and tough enough to drive a BMW bike! -
Any - LR Discovery 4 - alternatives? 15 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I need a 7-seat SUV - the Disco 4 has more off-road capability than I need - the BMW X5 doesn't have enough - what comes in between? I've looked at 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe but it's rather low to the ground and 3rd-row access needs a contortionist - I've heard stories of VAG dealers who advise Touareg and Q7 owners not to go off-road at all - old-school SUVs like the Landcruiser LC don't handle well enough on tarmac for me. -
Best and safest family diesel for £4000 5 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Hi all I have been driving 4x4's over the last few winters but having to cut the fuel bill down so going back to a normal car :-( I have about £4000 to spend and want a safe, relatively economical family car - preferably a diesel. Safe being the main concern! Going back to 2wd in the ice makes me nervous so no BMW suggestions please due to the RWD lol My son is 5ft 10 so must be something quite roomy in the back - I hate small cars anyway :-D I have looked for an AWD Volvo or Audi but too pricey to get a decent one with reasonable miles and subarus are nearly all gas guzzling petrols What should I spend my hard earned cash on? -
Volkwagon Beetle 2.0 petrol - Intermittent lack of power 27 Jul 2010 (Forum)
She has left the car with me while she is away for a fortnight to sort out the problem. My only experience of this was with an old BMW that didithe same thing and in the end that required a new disributor cap and rotor arm. Can anybody offer any advice as to best way to solve the fault. Thanks Mazda60. -
Ebay-Cheap HDI tuning chips, avoid or good? 11 Jan 2010 (Forum)
They all offer an item which seems to clip in line with your diesel HDi common rail injector, and claim to take most Peugeot Citroen (and BMW, and Ford HDi's) 110hp HDi up to 130hp, for somewhere in the region of £85-£100. Anyone got any experience of these? Here is a link to several on Ebay now, under search term 'HDI tuning Citroen'. -
Which car companies will be left in 10 years time? 20 Dec 2009 (Forum)
and Beijing automotive (who I think will be selling us cheap Roewe 75's and the Saab technologies they have just picked up). I wonder where Opel or its offspring might be? Can BMW continue to be independent? Will Honda stay on its own? Will we have a new company from no where selling us electric vehicles? Any thoughts?
