  • Direct injection petrol engines - do they work? 4 Mar 2009 (Forum)
More manufacturers are going the direct injection petrol route. VAG, Porsche, Mitsubishi, BMW, Mercedes Benz to name a few, with most of the others exploring the technology. Given that early examples of the VW FSI and Ford SCi have a pretty terrible reputation for longevity and reliability, and even PSA abandoned their first Di engine on reliability grounds, has this technology now improved to the point where it's a sensible long term ownership proposition?
  • Why are they not gritting this year?? 12 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I struggled to get to the main road this morning - the road I travel on from my house isnt exactly a minor road and gets plenty of use from the surrounding villages! A mate has just called to say he has wrote his BMW off by spinning and hitting a Golf coming in the opposite direction this morning - luckily nobody was hurt but it wont be before long someone is killed. Now, either they have ran out of salt or the council have decided to invest their money in some icelandic bank or other......
  • Gaping mouths 16 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Audi seem to have started the trend, now being copied by many, e.g. Ford & Peugeot. And while I'm at it, why do the recent BMWs look so sinister and nasty, particularly in the darker colours? It seems to be something about the swage lines along the sides. Am I being too sensitive?-Why did my old Bullnose Morris radiator make the look so sweet?
  • Rover 75 (1999 - 2005) - 2.0V6 opinions please. 22 Mar 2008 (Forum)
There seems to be more info on the 1.8 (not very positive), the 2.5V6 (better, especially in MG 190BHP form) and the BMW sourced diesel (recommended in the CbyC, with the XPOWER pack). But there's not much chat about this 2.0V6. Is it good or bad? To my mind he should buy either a 2.5 or the diesel, but I'm ready to be corrected.

Unlike the original swivelling auxiliary lights of the Citroen DS, this system operates on dipped beam, although the BMW X5 has dip/main lighting in the foglights, matching the main headlights. (Well, it would, wouldn't it?!!) Cornering lights shouldn't therefore cause dazzle and should usefully throw light precisely where it's needed.

Everywhere: no over-regulation of traffic, no over-signing, no cameras; motorists treated like responsible adults. Iffy surfaces vs BMW M Sport suspension aside, the driving was a joy. I think I'll be back for a second helping come half-term.

  • Surprise! 21 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Driving down M1 Southbound near Derby this pm, middle lane, outside lane fairly solid when I heard a siren. Checked mirrors, and couldn't see anything for a moment, then saw nice light Blue BMW bike which caused others in the fast lane some consternation; a moment later he was followed by a full dress 4x4 (looked Korean? not sure what it was, which is not like me...) again, it was STAGGERING the number of people who didn't realise he was on their rear bumper even though blues and twos(with all the variations sirens have these days) were running: one or two people's immediate reaction when they DID see him was to hit the brakes!

Have I missed anything in the last 35 years or has there been a Vitesse-sized gap in the market? I suppose the BMW 3-series qualifies - at a price. Ideas anyone?

I remember when we went to buy my mate's car (a 10 year old VR6) the bloke was pretty free and easy about letting us drive it although obviously it was only worht 10% of the BMW's value.

  • Ronin - the film 18 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Why make a point of getting a character to demand an S8 with nitrous, if they didn't use it to its full potential. They even ignored (in the screenplay) the fact that the BMW in the final scene was an M5! It's the same in American films. They get two cars chasing, but on a open road, the faster one still can't get ahead or pull away.

According to a survey by confused.com a lot of prestigious cars are involved in a disproportionate numbers of accidents - see http://cars.uk.msn.com/news/car_news_article.aspx?cp-documentid=746281 . In this "top ten" you will notice Alfa, BMW and Audi are well represented. The Managing Director of confused.com said, "...luxury and executive cars have among the highest accident rates because they are often used for long distance travel, with busy, stressed and tired executives behind the wheel."

Just got into the carpark in time to see someone bash my car with their door as they got out, so fortunately was able to get her name/phone number etc although her manner suggested that I ought to just forget it Damage is a 15 x 10 mm chip, no dent but chipped down to the metal. Right on the wheelarch - car is silver BMW 3 series. Both above companies quote £80 or £85 + VAT over the phone which seems reasonable to me.............I told the lady who damaged the car I would get the cheapest quote and ring her with it, hopefully she finds it reasonable but maybe she is expecting me to say someone will touch it in for a tenner?
  • new small exec car, which one? 3 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Dad is now looking to replace his 51 plate Audi A4 1.9TDi and doesnt know what to go for. Choices hes narrowed down to are: BMW 320D Audi A4/A6 2.0TDi Alfa 157 JTD - may have to keep Audi a bit longer for this! He will be doing 40K a year and running costs are not that important as company pays, however he only gets 9 pence a mile for his diesel so needs to at least break even with this.

  • used car safety ratings 2 Jul 2005 (Forum)
In the luxury category I noticed that the Volvo S70/V70 didn't score as well as the 700/900 which is an older design. The BMW E34 didn't do as well as either. In the small cars the pre 98 Astras got a much better rating than the post 98 ones. The Focus is not listed because it wasn't imported into Australia during the period of the study but the old style 95 to 01 Mondeo gets a good rating.
