Hello All,

Father in law has always liked Rover 75's and has taken a fancy to a yr2000 2.0V6 model stickered at £3400. It has 50k miles. Not sure which model.

Has anyone got any information about this engine? There seems to be more info on the 1.8 (not very positive), the 2.5V6 (better, especially in MG 190BHP form) and the BMW sourced diesel (recommended in the CbyC, with the XPOWER pack). But there's not much chat about this 2.0V6. Is it good or bad? To my mind he should buy either a 2.5 or the diesel, but I'm ready to be corrected.

Also, what is a sensible price to pay for a 50k yr2000 Rover 75?

Any help appreciated

Thanks

I'd second walk away or at least think again. This is a near 8 year old car.... Not in the same league perhaps but stepson bought a Proton Compact 1999 for around £1000 last August. We could have bartered but he liked it :-(

Isn't this the K Series gone large. If so walk very quickly the other way. Friend had a Freelander with one of these in it. At least the leather seats kept him comfy whilst awaiting recovery. It broke down so often that the Council nearly demolished it as they thought it wanted planning permission.

That is at least £1000 more than I would be prepared to pay (and I like them). Other people on here will soon be queueing up to say that it is over-priced by about £3400.

The 2.0 V6 uses as much fuel as the 2.5 but is slower. It was a pointless model hence it was dropped after only a couple of years.

Go for the 2.5 V6 as at least it has a bit more power and there are a lot more examples about so parts and fixing skills are better.

If the owner give sit away with £1,000 to pay for the inevitable repairs, it's a bargain.

Otherwise a hole awaiting £s to fill it.

I had a 1.8 estate 2004 till it was written off yes I did replace the head gasget but the diesels for some reason eat clutches and you have to remove the front subframe to change and then you need to have it carefully retracked not a job for a backstreet cowboy. This one is grossley over priced you could get a good 03 for that. The one to go for is an 1.8 t estate fitted with sat nav and tv as these hold their price much better you can get a digital upgrade for the tv, spares are plentiful exept radiator fan motors rear bodyparts and original fuel pumps with filter.

They're actually a very good car by all accounts, but I think this one is probably overpriced so I'd recommend shopping around for a nice 2.5 or the diesel.

Remember that anything above the 1.8 has megga co2 emmissions and will be put in the highest band another reason why they should be cheap.

Dunno where you get that from the 2.5 190+ is 239g/km the equivalent BMW is 250ish.
Big problem with theV6 is the cam belt change at around 90K or 5 years, it's around 10 hours +!

Think I am just going to echo everyone else but:

- it is overpriced at that, a quick check on autotrader will give a rough price, maybe 1K lower if its in really good nick

- KV6 is reliable and doesnt suffer the K4 headgasket problems, however the 2.5 is going to give you more performance at the same economy - the 2.0 V6 was replaced by the 1.8T in 2002ish

- Cambelts are around £600 on both the 2 and 2.5 V6 engine and need doing every 6 years or 90K. Expect this one hasnt been done as its 'low mileage'

Against the advice of many on this forum, I bought a ZT2.5 V6 a few weeks ago. I've only been driving it for a week, as I had an accident immediately after purchase (but that's another story).

I found a very low mileage (15k) pre facelift car (I wanted the twin headlamps and rear wing!) on an 04 plate in pristine condition, and it is absolutely fantastic to drive, well built, very quick....

So I would definitely recommend a 2.5 ZT or Rover 75. As others have said, though, you might as well go for the 2.5 over the 2.0. I've got 28mpg so far, which isn't bad considering I do a fair amount of stop/start driving.

Also, while I really wanted one, these are no longer mainstream cars, and this has affected values. I paid just over £7k for mine, and I accept that is at a premium but it really is in as-new condition. If anybody had paid full list price for it, the low mileage means that it has depreciated by £1 per mile driven!

But I would probably steer clear of the one you are looking at. It does seem overpriced, especially if the cambelt has not been changed. Also, for a couple of £k more, you could get into a 2003/04 car, and I think this would be much better value.

K series engine. AVOID.

If you really really must then bear in mine the resale value in nil so buy on the basis you will wear it out and throw it away and even saying all this pay no more than £1,500.

Offer cash he'll pull your hand off. If anyone else offers more leave them to it.

Oh. Also 50k is about as far as they get before everything falls off.

Looks like Niallster is one of the typical anti-Rover brigade. Personally, I just laugh at those sort of ill-informed comments because they help to lower used prices for those that can see what a good car the R75/ZT is.

While I think it is sensible to avoid the 1.8 or 1.8T because of the famed HGF issues, such problems are, I understand, very rare on the 2.5.

Why don't you have a look on the Rover 75 and MG ZT owners' club? They know much more about the cars than I do (and an awful lot more than Niallster) - and are pretty unbiased as well.

2.5 much better than 2.0V6. 1.8 a no no even the turbo ( Turbo models devour cats & no one has the answer! )leave well alone. Parts are becoming difficult & some parts are no longer available. Inlet manifold are drying up & very expensive to buy from a breakers now! seat motors no longer available. Cooling fans for radiators no longer available & now have an after market one with a lot of modifications to the wiring & relay control. Obscure parts becoming short or non exsitant!. EWS modules & dash boards a pain & very expensive to replace & dedicated T4 kit needed to reprograme in modules on this vehicle. Most electrical components coded in with ZC's codes which have to be created by specialist's & configured again with T4.
2.5's a bargin for the right money as they drive well but watch out for oily breathers flooding manifolds with oil even on low milage engines & some suffereing with very HIGH oil pressure causing untold problems.
They suffer with water ingress on the ABS interface under the battery rotting the wiring looms out & causing unlimited faults & fuel pumps aint wonderfull iether. You could do better.

What is it with Rover threads ? The OP asks for an opinion and the thread degenerates into personal jibes - For once keep it civilized please.

PU, couldn't agree more. As I know from experience (when I was Primera Man), it's not really worth asking about MG Rovers on this forum, as any threads tend to get hijacked by the anti-Rover brigade.

As regards parts supply, that was the biggest issue for me when buying. All I can say is that all the parts needed when I had an accident were readily available. X-Part say they have most parts available and are committed to long term supply. Only time will tell, though.

I think the issue may not be so much that parts are unavailable, more that it will take longer to get them. AFAIK, the cooling fans are now available again.

When I left the country I sold my 1975 P6 3500 to a guy who subsequently gave it to a friend of his who's a panel beater. This guy's finally now decided to give it a respray as the tobacco brown is looking a bit tired. Not only does the car still start instantly, apparently there was no rust anywhere and when he started stripping it down all the panels unbolted with no problems. Not bad for a car parked in the street most of the past 10 years.

Now I'm wondering if when he's finished cleaning it up I should buy it back off him and ship it over here!

Of course commonsense dictates that there is just no good reason for the OP to buy this car. Sad but true.

Gee, looks like I was extremely lucky to have had the choice last week of whether to buy an OEM fan for £380 + fitting, or an aftermarket for £170 + Fitting. And the I went for the cheaper, my garage (who had never done a fan on a 75 CDT before) did the wiring mod, and cut the shroud for 4 hours labour - so making the aftermarket fan over £200 cheaper then the OEM one - choices, chioces!!!

As for build quality etc - I would pit my 6 year old 75 with 123k on the clock against any other car of it's age. It has no rattles or squeaks.

I would say go look for a diesel for that money, just check the cooling fan thats all, the one he has seen seems over priced for it's age.

Thanks for all the replies people

An update - after dissuading him from the 2.0V6, father in law then went out in the 1.8T parked next to it and really liked it. However I've managed to hammer home that the K series 1.8 is a no-no! So he's going to have a look at an 03 diesel now from another garage. This is the Connessieur (sp?) model so has the full leather and wood "jaguar" effect, which he finds most appealling. There is an XPart in Poole, where we live, so servicing seems do-able and they are also advertising the Xpower re-map at the moment, which the CarbyCar advises improves the engines performance to a decent level.

Anyone with diesel specific comments please fire away

Once again, thanks for the posts and updates to follow!

I would be interested to hear what he thinks of the diesel. Before I bought my 190, I drove a diesel ZT, as I thought it would be a more sensible car to buy, certainly in terms of running costs.

TBH, it sounded and felt like an old-fashioned diesel, loud, nose-heavy, brakes not very effective. For me, it completely spoilt the otherwise sporty nature of the car.

By contrast, my 190 is refined, quiet and great to drive. It also has that lovely V6 growl when provoked. I had decided that the car I was going to go for was going to be a treat and I feel the 190 is in a way that a diesel could not be.

I fully accept that the running costs of the 190 will be at least £1k more per year than the Primera it replaced, but that is a price I am prepared to pay.

Depending on his mileage, why don't you guide him towards a 190? Of course, these are difficult cars to sell, especially with the VED changes, so they have to be bought for long term ownership.

Of course, it may be that the diesel I drove was unrepresentative, as owners on the ZT/75 club rave about theirs (and also tend to modify them).

Let us know what he thinks of the car.

I got my diesel 75 about 10 weeks ago, love it, superb drive and looks great. I'm averaging about 42mpg with 75% stop start town driving.

But do check the cooling fan operation, on earlier models (have no idea when things changed) they fitted a 3 speed cooling fan and the low speed brushes burn out. This can be checked by making sure the aircon is switched on, when on the fan should run at slow speed, if it does not then time to change the fan. If it has the later fan fitted that is a 2 speed one then that to should run at slow speed with aircon on, if it does not then the resistor pack is a likely cause and upgraded versions of the pack can be got quite cheaply. (you can see the resistor pack over the passangers side of the fan when looking through the front grill.)

Also go look at the the the75andztclub.co.uk for loads and loads of info on the cars.

They are a much underrated car by the masses which makes them excellent value for money.

Or S-Type Jag? Plenty of 3.0 SE early models for very little money around. They will have probably had all the usual bits replaced (leaking coolant tan, ARB bushes etc).

A lot of car for very little money.

Just received a brief message on the mobile from the Father in Law. He didn't like the diesel (comments exact match to brg190Pete). Said this example was tatty aswell.
I will try again to get him into an MG 190, or at least a 75 2.5V6. I am with brg190Pete on this in that I am prepared to pay out extra to run the car I really desire, however think Father in Law cannot see past high VED and low MPG. He should drive one before ruling it out though so will request he tests one!

Thanks for the suggestions on other cars. I thought about S and X types too. Will suggest he tries them, trouble is think the running costs will put him off. Suspect he is a bit tight and not enough of an enthusiast to balance increased motoring enjoyment with higher costs!

Thanks for all the help guys.

Updates to follow..

If you think VED is high on bigger cars, just wait.
I expect it to double in 5 years.
Easy target and Government needs the money - it has spent it already.
