Mini Cooper Convertible - Broken roof tensioner retaining clip 12 Dec 2019 (Forum)
I have found similar problem on a USA forum but nothing in the UK. I can't believe we are the only owner with this problem. No surprise BMW want to replace the whole roof at £2,000. However without any suggestion from me the dealer has offered to pay half the parts cost plus labour which is still £1,200 pretty shocking for a low mileage 4 year old car. -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 12-01-2019 Part 1 14 Jan 2019 (Forum)
The difference in reliability between the so called premium European makes, and a decent Far East produced car are enormous. I was chatting to a BMW Mini owner in a car park a few days ago; having noted his new Mini was shiny and my old Mitsi really dirty; I posed the question "How much do you think this has cost me in repairs over the last 10 years". "£5,000", was his guess -

Best car for repatriation, opinions appreciated! 30 May 2013 (Forum)
Long time lurker, first time poster. I've been working in Germany for the last year, and during this time I have had a company BMW 1 series. In July I will return to England and I am looking to buy a car for between 2 - 3000 pounds (sorry no pound symbol on German keyboards) Im looking for a relatively small petrol car, eg Peugeot 206, Vauxhall Astra, Ford Focus etc... -
E39 5 Series E39 - Which Warranty 22 May 2012 (Forum)
Hello, can anyone advise which would be the best of a bad bunch of the car warranties to go for. Ive looked at warranty direct and works warranty also looked at BMW warranty which is expensive ut they do cover alot. Warranty direct cover wear and tear but some of the reviews are less then complimentry. I know people say all warranties are a waste of money better off saving a few quid every month. -
High (ish) mileage diesels - risk or bargain? 14 Aug 2011 (Forum)
In my perpetually restless state of mind I am really considering the possibility of buying a 4 year old diesel Audi/BMW with around 60k on the clock. Both are one owner cars, tidy with full dealer service history but I have previously only ever bought low mileage cars. The dealers party line is that '60k is nothing on one of these' but it's not just the engine is it? -
If you have a technical question.... 23 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Not used the forum before - so not sure whether this question belongs here: I need to replace my PIRELLI P6000 195/65 R15 91H (or V) tyres on my 2001 BMW 320D Touring with alloy wheels . Are there any better tyres available with combination of smoother running / better traction in wet or on ice / better cornering / longer life? The MICHELIN Energy Saver publicity sounds interesting but I am looking for an impartial opinion or result of independant tests. -
£7.5k to spend on a large estate or MPV - HELP!! 1 Sep 2010 (Forum)
I have a £7.5k budget available and due to an ever increasing family (currently 5 plus dog, likely to be 6 before too long), we need a change around in cars. I have a BMW Z4 (which I've been told has to go!), my considerably better half has a 52 plate Passat estate with 100k on the clock. We need something that is going to be reliable, economical, not too many miles on te clock and comfortable for long journeys (I travel a lot with work and we travel a fair bit at the weekends too as a family). -
Various - MOT build quality 16 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Well, I'm in the mood for a 5pm G&T after my 11 year old BMW E36 Convertible sailed through its MOT test this afternoon. 88000 miles etc. Enough gloating, but on speaking with the mechanic I was surprised to see an 05 Megane sitting in a corner requiring many £££ to pass: At 55000 miles, our French friend required news discs all round, two new shocks, some bearing or other, two CV joints, and a new power steering rack. -
a small 4x4 7 Jan 2010 (Forum)
My dads neighbour owns a 3 series BMW which cannot cope in snow and ice. The chap has taken to borrowing my dads ancient Rover 216 estate to get the 20 odd miles to work and back. He is toying with the idea of buying a small four wheel drive car for use when the going gets tough. -
Cadillac CTS (2004 - 2008) - Fancy one of these 29 Nov 2009 (Forum)
you can get cheaper 2.8s, but heres a 3.6, can't quite believe the price! HJs review is surprisingly good (close to BMW M5 performance). Apart from the running costs, where's the catch? http://www.stratstone.com/vehiclesearch/used/cadillac-used-car-lj55fjx.html?qs=false Guy -
Police operation on M6 Friday pm? [Read Only] 8 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Hi all, Travelling south/east down the M6 this afternoon between Corley services and J3 I saw a liveried police V70 and a plain-clothes A6 boxing in an Astra on the hard shoulder, a liveried BMW estate parked behind another Astra on the northbound hard shoulder, then a police V70 and police 5-series having a word with a Golf about half a mile later on the southbound side. There was also a police 5-series parked on the over-bridge at J3. -
Advice for buying £4-5K Diesel car please 15 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I am selling my 307 and would welcome any recommendations on what car to buy next please? Requirements please: Diesel £4-5K I prefer the style of VW, Audi, Merc, BMW type cars Reliable Reasonable boot space (Hatchback or Estate, don't think I want a saloon though) 5 doors Had 110 BHP before so would like similar feel if possible (Dream car is a 2002+ Yellow Beetle but the diesels seem to be above my price range at the mo - £7K ish minimum). -
Hyundai i10 (2008 - ) - Dealer wants to cancel 12 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Hi, can anyone offer advice. I ordered a Hyundai i10 in May, trading in a 5 yr old BMW 520 as part ex. The dealer signed a contract to supply with an agreed part ex allowance. There have been severe delays. The dealer contacted me in July to say they would honour the contract even though the list price had gone up. -
Speedsters galore, fuel must be too cheap 4 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Why is it that drivers of diesel engined BMW, Audi, Mercedes and VW cars speed along dual carriageways well in excess of the speed limit ? Today I lost count with the number of drivers who must have been doing well in excess of 90 mph along the A46 and not for the first time either. -
Jaguar X-Type (2001 - 2009) - auto question? 19 Jan 2008 (Forum)
The J gate auto does not seem to have a "Tiptronic" type function, it is either fully auto or, when the lever is moved around to the hook of the J, manual selection of 2, 3, or 4 only, i.e. no option to flick up and down the ratios like the BMW system I am familiar with. Likewise Audi where you move the lever to one side and a flick changes up or down. Any experinces of the Jag system in use? Reckon I would prefer the manual. -

Should I choose a new or used car ? 2 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Planning ahead...are there any definitive studies on the cost of holding a car from new to [say] 3 years over years 4-6 for example, including likely maintenance costs? I'm considering a change and looking at BMW 3 Tourer, C Class [old shape, don't go for the new one], new C5, Legacy, and Focus Estate. But whether to buy new or used increases the options by quite a lot. Probably going for a petrol too, not over 2 litres. -
Why not more RWD cars? 1 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Why don't more manufacturers make RWD cars ? They are obviously very popular , just look at BMW. As far as I know , no one makes a luxury car that is not RWD, so this must be a selling point on lesser vehicles. When cars were much smaller than they are today I can see that the transmission tunnel would have eaten valuable interior space , but most cars now have far roomier interiors , so would be less effected.I know plenty of people who (rightly or wrongly) think that a FWD car can't be a decent drivers car , and 250 BHP is pretty much the limit for this format. -
Online car brokers 21 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Has any one ever dealt with newcars4less? have had a reasonable quote from them on a new BMW 3 series. They seem to accept part exchange. Apparently you have to deal with them direct regarding handing over funds rather than the dealer but will be UK spec with UK warranty and will deliver to your door.
