I had a look at, though not a drive of, a very nice 3.0 V6 SE today.
The J gate auto does not seem to have a "Tiptronic" type function, it is either fully auto or, when the lever is moved around to the hook of the J, manual selection of 2, 3, or 4 only, i.e. no option to flick up and down the ratios like the BMW system I am familiar with. Likewise Audi where you move the lever to one side and a flick changes up or down.
Any experinces of the Jag system in use?
Reckon I would prefer the manual.

that will be very similar to my S Type
I hardly ever use it, as if you want the car to be more responsive and/or hold gears longer etc, pressing the 'sport' button achieves all I need.
Kick down on the auto is normally perfectly adequate, because even if you're heading for a tight overtake and would like it sat in the correct gear, anticipation usually deals with it...but..if you really want to hold the gear e.g. that overtake or approaching a corner and you don't want it to change up half way through, then the J gate is easy enough to use

Yup same as S-Type J gate also known as Randall Handle after Jim Randle a Jag development driver. I use mine more than the sport button. Knocking it to 5th for extra engine braking & will occasionally use 2nd to keep the speed down when crawling in traffic jams. The sport button makes little difference to the diesel TBH.

Extra engine braking in 5th? The lower the gear the more engine braking.
The X-Type J gate has options of holding 2nd, 3rd and 4th though I assume it is a 5 speed auto?
I know the new 2.2d auto is 6 speed though that is totally different and has a Tiptronic function.
