  • Operating the electric handbrake..inconsistencies 6 Feb 2013 (Forum)
Some inconsistencies here in the application and use, if they standardised it would be better i'm sure. I can't comment on VW/Audi, and i can't remember exactly how the Vauxhall Insignia brake operated, but i don't recall anything unusual, and i can't remember how Renaults operate either. Anyway here's a few to start with Citroen Pull on Pull off.

  • Which Car - Golf, A3 or 1 Series 2 Jan 2012 (Forum)
I'm sure that various people have been in the same quandry with these cars, but the more I've researched, the more unsure i am. My main concern is reliability, with regard to the VW & Audi, not sure about the BMW I've read alot about issues with the diesel engine, and the consensus seems to be the 1.9 TDi is the better one to go for, is that right? Am i doomed if i go for the 2.0 tdi??
  • 4 x 4 / winter tyres or socks ? 12 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Because of a/n, and looking for something reasonably big for my mountain bike, was considering a 4 x 4 - maybe a Rav 4. Would really like an Audi A4 though; how big a difference would there be between the likes of a Rav 4 and the A4 fitted with winter tyres when it came to grip on snow. Have read other forums and could it be that snow socks could be the answer if i bought an A4 ?
  • Jaguar X-Type 2004 2.0D classic (53 reg) - part service history - stay away? 12 Jul 2010 (Forum)
It needed to be large enough for our little'un as well so I started looking at saloon range cars, Audi A4, Peugeot 407 etc.  So I came across a Jag X Type which fits the bill and I have always always wanted a Jag. My concern is that the ad states "Part Service History", and when quizzed on the phone the trader said that it was stamped at 9000 and 26000.
  • Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - 2005 2.2 VSC / TRC Off Warning Light 18 Nov 2009 (Forum)
    I am wondering whether the system has detected the tyres are worn, and hence is illuminated, so it could be cured with some new rubber, or whether I should make an expensive visit to Toyota first for a diagnosis ( If they can fit me in this week ) Also anyone seen the New Avensis in the flesh ? I have to choose between this and the New Audi A4 for my next car. Thanks Fox {Volume of subject header lowered for those suffering a Monday morning hangover}
  • Input on my next car please!!!!! 27 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I have discounted the silly cars in respect of cost of income tax and cars that I really wouldn?t drive and here is my shortlist. Audi A4 TDI Avant SE 143 BMW 3 series Touring 320d SE Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI CR 170 Elegance Rav 4 2.2D XT-R (not really sure about this one) Verso T Spirit 2.0 d4d (again not really sure) Passat Diesel estate Highline CR DSG (I do like autos) Tiguan 2.0 TDI SE Volvo V50 2.0d SE Lux (both powershift and non-powershift are available) Your thoughts are most welcome.
  • How should I be using cruise control? 22 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I find that I am forever setting and resetting the cruise control as I get closer to slower moving cars ahead of me, or having to break and drop out of cruise because the Audi lane is already full of cars and I can't overtake, or someone drops into my lane and forces me to break and drop out of cruise. In fact the cruise control goes on-and-off like the proverbial tart's underwear!
  • 09 plate winners and losers 14 Sep 2009 (Forum)
From what I have seen Winners: Ford Ka/Fiesta - I must admit I have trouble telling them apart sometimes Fiat 500 - Appears to be the new cool car Hyundai i10 - Cheap and cheerful - especially with scrappage Golf Mk VI - Despite delays in orders, I'm seeing loads of these now Audi A4 - Appears to be the new company car of choice where I work Losers: Anything with a big petrol engine. Obviously it's hard to tell with vanity plates, but I haven't seen any 09 plate Range Rovers, 7 series Beemers, very few MPVs and ever fewer hot hatches (although the latter may be due to young male drivers not being able to get finance).
  • 2nd mid-life crisis- so, what car? 15 Feb 2009 (Forum)
The other voice; emanating from my head, says some form of 6 cyl exec' i.e. BMW 3 series or Merc' CLK or an Audi. Pray to God my backside has no say in it then heaven knows what we will end up with. Got to be auto, leather. Choices, choices.
  • Is this a weird fantasy? 11 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Always loved big luxury cars but could never quite afford these when they came out new (being 17/18 at the time) and no other current luxury car "does it for me". In other words, would rather spend £500 - £900 on one of these than £30k on a BMW, Audi, or Mercedes (not that I have £30k). I keep having dreams about owning a car like one of these, constantly look for cheap deals on auction websites / car websites, watching similar cars being renovated on Wheeler Dealer, checking out parked cars, and going round second hand dealers.
  • SAAB 9000CS (1986 - 1998) - Turning circle? As bad as Alfa 164? 9 Aug 2008 (Forum)
I have two car widths of room (13-14 feet) in front of the garage door in which I have to turn the car through 90s degrees. Sometimes I have managed to reverse downhill (the easiest way of doing it) in one sweep in an Audi 100, and got an A4 B6 out with a pause, reverse and steering correction driving out. Does the SAAB 9000 have the same poor turning circle as the Alfa 164? They are both Type 4 cars along with the Fiat Croma and Lancia Thema, but I know that the Alfa had different front suspension to give it a lower, more sweeping bonnet line.
  • Volkswagen - VAG 2.0 PD TDI engines - are they trouble? 21 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I have been rather alarmed by some of the admittedly anecdotal evidence that I've been privy to recently with regard to this engine. One of the guys at work had HGF on his 55 plate Audi A3 2.0TDI a few months ago, and another had oil pump drive failure on a 2.0 TDI Passat. I also know of two Golfs - both on 57 plates that are in the main dealers now with HGF, and the recent post on here of a Passat needing two engine replacements inside of 25k I know this engine is used all over the place, and only so much can be read into a few failures, but the HGF issue does seem to be quite common, as well as other stories that they're just not as tough or unfailingly reliable as the old 1.9 unit.
  • Ford Mondeo IV (2007 - ) - TDCi "transient overboost" -- what triggers it? 8 Jul 2008 (Forum)
--> is it only available in certain conditions (i.e. coolant / oil temp above a certain range, exhaust gas temp in a certain range etc) I would have thought the driver has to actively initiate it with a determined right foot -- especially after the "unintended acceleration" lawsuit that hit Audi in the US in the 80s. Any thoughts / input / links gratefully received.
  • Super-saloon - realistic running costs? 5 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I won't be trading the Boxster for a while, so this is more out of interest than intent, but having spent an afternoon looking at moters on the trader website I saw some tasty 15k-ish motors: * E39 M5 * E46 M3 * CLK 500 * Audi S4 Do these motors realistically cost more to run than a Boxster or is that naive? The Boxster isn't particularly cheap to run IMO. I'm not talking about insurance, fuel & tax, which will obviously be higher in these group 20 monsters, just servicing & maintenance & provisional budget for service parts etc.
  • Fiesta 1.4 TDCI Engine characteristics?? 17 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I beleive the Peugeot C3 has the same engine.... Getting a bit peeved looking and sounding like a learner driver!!!! (my other car is an 05 Audi S4 - proper drivers car) and I can drive that one allright!! :-) Best wishes and Thanks for your time Stu The other thread you started has been deleted to isolate answers to this one. I think I may have been a bit overzealous in changing the original one, however you explain the problem a lot better in this one :-) - PU
  • What car for 10-12k? 2 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Hi Everyone, Apologies if this is an oft aired subject here, but I need a new car, have a budget of 10-12k, and have no idea what to get My requirements would be; - fuel consumption not an issue, don't drive far, had a V6 2.5 auto last time, so something similar would be great - favourite car I've owned would be my 2001 Audi S3, they do fall into the budget this time round, so a consideration - I like the look of the Alfa 147, but worried about depreciation - ideally would like something FAST, with leather, air con, CD etc, maybe auto - like the look of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the 2.7 diesel sounds like an ideal choice, this is in budget - other end of the scale, Lotus Elises seem to be going for around this price, as do some Honda S2000's - also seems like some BMWs - 330, 325 - fall into budget, shape before the current one, older M3's look nice Any advice greatfully received, as you can see I'm all over the shop really Thanks Dirk
  • Which non-SUV 4x4/AWD? 4 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I'm looking at getting a 4WD but I really don't want a SUV. I don't need an estate, but I'd consider one. So would the likes of a Subaru Legacy or a AWD Audi/Volvo be capable off making sure I don't get stuck? Or should I be looking at a proper 4x4? I could go up to around 15-20k for the right car, which would preferably be nearly new and low mileage. Prefer petrol and must do 0-60 in around 10 secs or better.
  • GOLF MK 3 Replace off-side wishbone 1 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I have found out that the gaining access to the front bush retaining bolt is far as straight forward as on earlier Golfs and Audis - the proximity of the sump makes access to the M18 shouldered bolt head (M19 normally) quite restricted both to undo and to extract. So, with fingers crossed that I didn't break/crack any linkages or exhaust bits I jacked the engine up from under the sump (all padded etc).
  • Help with next car please: 21 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Hiya, I am new to this forum but have been on many others; mondeo, seat, bmw, audi, focus, peugeot, golf etc etc. I am on my 38th car and about to swap it for my 39th, but, what do I get next? I wondered if I put my requirements on here, you lot out there might be bored enough to have a read and come up with some answers for me.
