Which car to buy? 18 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Audi A4 2.0 TDI Sport - As per the A3, but I only like the S-Line model. So, what would the backroom buy? Budget is circa £6K, I'd be asking Joe Dowd to look out for whichever car I get to ensure that I get a decent price. -
Volkswagen Golf V estate (2007 - ) - 10,000 mile report 18 Mar 2008 (Forum)
They fold flat (unforgiveable in an estate if they don't) but you have to remove the headrests first. So 9 / 10. My natural habitat is still an Audi, but the V6s are too expensive, and you can't justify the extra cost of the A4 2.0 TDI over this, when the Golf does about 95 % of the job. -
B-class - first impressions 27 Mar 2006 (Forum)
All credit to Greenoaks of Reading for making the whole exercise a pleasant experience (apart from saying farewell to my much-loved Audi - but the B200 CDI is £100 cheaper per month because of M-B's special offer). (Hard to believe but the monthly payment is £50 cheaper than a Skoda Octavia 2.0 TDI estate.) So far I like: - Lofty driving position and very good seats - Lighter steering than the A4 (too light for some people but I prefer it) - Mostly good visibility - better than an A-class, even at the back - Performance promises to be lively, although I fully expect it to take up to 10,000 miles to give of its best, as with most diesels - Lots of room front and back, and back seats fold flat. -
New car advice - downsizing 6 Feb 2023 (Forum)
Hi All, Looking for a bit of sound advice as always, given the plethora of new cars on the market today. Here's the brief: Looking to downsize from the current Audi A4, to something 2 sizes down, i.e. Clio, 208 etc. Doing a lot less miles these days, no need for the bi-annual run down to the South of France, and public transport where we live is both cheap and good quality. -
Mid Large Family Car 17 May 2022 (Forum)
Continuing the old fashioned theme, I'm a sucker for a sunroof, or even soft top. Now the tricky bit; I don't want a Merc, BMW, Audi, Jaguar or any VAG brand. So far, I can think of a Volvo S90 (a bit too big), Kia Stinger (a bit too flashy) or some kind of Maserati / Alfa (a bit too unreliable). Any other ideas please? -
VW Polo 1.2 - Is it worth continuing with main dealer servicing? 25 Jan 2022 (Forum)
It’s now due a major service and also apparently a brake fluid service. My local VW have quoted £433 for this work, a local garage (specialising in VW, Audi and Skoda) has quoted around the £300 mark. My question is, from a resale value perspective, is it worth continuing with main dealer servicing? This is the first time I’ve had a ‘nice’ car, so I’m not sure how long I’ll keep it exactly (previous cars have been scrapped or sold due to unreliability after just a few years). -
Used family car - ULEZ car buying conundrum 28 Sep 2020 (Forum)
Any recommendations? Current thinking is compact estate and specifically BMW 3 Series (320i) or Audi A4 Avant (1.4 or 2.0 TFSI). Did look at Skoda Superb. Thoughts? -
Any - Mixing 'summer' & all-season tyres 31 Jul 2020 (Forum)
https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/askhj/answer/148301/can-i-fit-a-mix-of-summer-and-winter-tyres-to-my-car- Question: 'Can I fit summer tyres to the front of my Audi A3 and all-weather tyres to the rear?' Answer: 'No, this would destabilise the car. The rear of the vehicle would have substantially more grip than the front. And in all likelihood, this would cause an accident.' -
Honda CR-V - Honda CR-V 25 May 2019 (Forum)
I need a car that can seat 5 people (2 adults and 3 kids, out of which 2 are in car seats). I would had liked Audi Q5 but the middle rear seat is very tight. Looking at Honda CR-V 1.6 diesel auto (I own a Honda Accord, had it for over 9 years and its still going strong). Thanks to flat floor at the rear, none of the kids would complaint and I think getting 3 kids at the back won't be an issue at all. -
Audio SQ5 - Buying a car that smells of cigar smoke 2 Mar 2018 (Forum)
Hello, I was hoping I could get some advice. We’ve found a car that we really like through an Audi dealership – we’re due to be viewing it in a couple of days, but have just heard from the salesperson that on inspection, the car smells heavily of cigar smoke and he’s advising us against having it sent down here and even looking at it…. -

Help choosing next car 23 Apr 2015 (Forum)
.) * must be manual 'box * under £7k My initial trawls have met with mostly disdain - • Hyundai Santa Fe (too big) • Suberu Impreza (death on wheels) • Audi (she hates the badge) • Freelander (too slow, too small inside, dear to run) • Skoda Octavia / Scout (I will look like a geography teacher in the minor counties) If it were mine, I'd find a Mazda 6 MPS, or a Golf R32 - but there's the rub. -
VW GOLF or anyother model - What car to choose ? - very much confused 11 Sep 2014 (Forum)
Verdict -DH found VW not interesting, Toyota ok. Whilst viewing all these , we happend to view AUDI A4 s Line Avant (58 plate , 36k for 14k) and quite liked it. Not pursuing because of the running cost. We would also like to consider successful 320D BMW. We are so confused. please help. -
Mazda 6 - MAZDA 6 Diesel or not? 17 Aug 2014 (Forum)
Option 2- Audi A4 (07/08 plate) - DPF problems and unreliable Option 3 - Ford Mondeo (09/10 plate - not heard much wrong with these cars) Option 4 - Honda Accord (09/10) - again not heard much wrong with this one either. -
Mercedes-Benz C-Class - Looking to buy C-Class or alternative 10 Mar 2014 (Forum)
The C-Class seems to be the leading candidate, I've also looked at the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 as alternatives; as I want to try something other than Japanse (used to own an Accord as well). So basically, a small family saloon. My budget will hold out for anything upto about 7.5k and has to be an Auto (dodgy ankle). -
Vauxhall Vectra C - buying a >3 litre car... scouring autotrader 10 Dec 2013 (Forum)
As you will be aware the site narrows the range of manufacturers for you. Mercedes - overpaying for the badge. Ditto BMW. Audis all seem to be quattros, don't think I need it really. Don't want a 4x4 of any kind. Don't want a diesel either. Nearly went for a Phaeton but the repair bills will make me sad. Narrowed down to a Vectra or Mondeo, both 3.2. -
Airbag Expiry Date - MOT Failure?? 10 Apr 2013 (Forum)
I've read in a Skoda service schedule - airbags need replacing at 15 years - and seen several things about airbag expiry date stickers on door pillars on Audis, MB etc etc all showing expiry dates at 10 -15 years from date of production If the bit about MOT "airbag expiry date" is correct, does that mean the majority of modern vehicles will end up being forcefully scrapped after 15 years?
