  • Scientific proof of speed hump damage to springs? 11 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I've heard all the unscientific opinions of laymen, but has anyone anywhere in the world come up with scientific proof that driving over speed humps can categorically lead to road spring failure?

  • Nissan Primera 1.8 SE Petrol (2003) - Won't start - battery or alternator...or other? 20 Jul 2013 (Forum)
It's the original battery in the car so at ten years old it's probably due a change, but are there likely to be any other causes? With the jump-leads it started first turn of the key, so I'm hoping that shows the starter motor to be OK. As always, any advice is very much appreciated. thank you, John
  • Squeaking Front Wheels -SEAT Leon 1.9tdi 19 Jul 2011 (Forum)
It doesn't happen when the car is cold (i.e if stationary for a few hours) but once warmed up for 10mins of urban driving the noise appears. This has lead me to beleive that it's a brake issue? It happens under braking which would lead to the usual suspects (dirty or fading brakes etc) but more worryingly it starts to happen everytime I turn right (again only once the car is warmed up).
  • Vauxhall Astra H (2004 - 2009) - 05 1.6 Engine Block Light & running on 3 cylinders 9 May 2011 (Forum)
I stopped to chek the manual which indicates that this is an exhaust emission fault. The car felt and ran just as it would if you had removed a spark plug lead. I made it home (approx. 4 miles) and the fault remained consistent. If the fault were a simple one, such as a spark plug lead coming off, would this make that light come on? Can anyone give me any pointers as to what it might be?

  • Audi 80 Mk II (1991-1995) - 93 2.0 Rad fan draining battery 11 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Didnt think much of this so came out to car after 2 or 3 hours and battery was flat as a very flat thing. There were no lights or anything totally drained. So after a jump lead was connected the rad fan kicked in again even before I had started engine. So for the time I have removed the lead to the fan but what would the possible cause of this? It has happened before w while back but it had "fixed itself".
  • Rover 25 (1999 - 2005) - 2001 1.4 Engine problems 28 May 2008 (Forum)
It is a friend's car.I had a quick look as I have a limited knowledge and found a hole in the centre section.I patched this with aluminium tape as a temp measure.I also replaced 3 of the spark plugs.Spark plug no.3 (2nd from right under coil pack) gave me a problem and I had to admit defeat. The rubber head of the lead remained around the plug and the rest of the lead came away.Plug no.4 (RHS) had oil around thread and electrode. The car was put into a local garage today and they have said the head gasket needs replaced.
  • Have I been conned? 7 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Sure enough, we checked the back of the radio and it had a jack plug for the remote control. Anyway, lead arrived today and we went to fit it, only to discover that the fly lead for the stalk controls didn't fit. Our radio has a mini-jack plug; this is a block connector. Ring them up: "Oh yes, Sir, you'll need the interface box which is 47 pounds extra".
  • Damp Weather and Merc 230 (1990) 15 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I can improve the situation if the car is pointing away from the prevailing wind. Is there a product that can be sprayed on to HT leads, distributor cap, coil etc (not a great fan of WD40 for this job)? Will a new coil help? Please help Hintza
  • Wet Rover won't start 30 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I'm on first name terms with the breakdown guys whose advice I've taken to try diferent fixes. All of the following is new in the last 12 months - battery, starter coil, all plug leads, plugs, distributor cap/rotor arm, vacuum pipes for starter sequence, air filter and the engine bay relays. I've also fitted a rubber coil cover off of a later model and cleaned all of the low tension leads from the ECU but all to no avail even after a liberal soaking of WD40.

  • \"Fast- fit outfit\" Trauma 25 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I took the car back and fair play they sorted out the alignment problem so that the car drove. However, in effecting the repair to the gear shift rod, I believe they damaged/removed an earth lead that ran from the engine block to the car body. The next day I broke down on the motorway with a knackered alternator. I would gratefully appreciate any advice on the likelihood of the lack of an earth lead from the engine block to the car body being the root cause of my now f***ed alternator.

I recently bought this 1991 car and was told by main dealer that it was an "absolute minter", however about a week ago quite suddenly it started to splutter, especially under load. It's had new plugs and they are burning perfect. Could it be the leads?
