Dodgy Mk2 Golf Electrics 14 Nov 2002 (Forum)
There is something that annoys me that I noticed last night - it seems that the electrics will be "on" after switching off - the wipers, the radio, even the brake lights will come on if you hit the pedal while the engine is off. I'm kind of thinking it could be one of two things. Firstly, the door seals were shot when I bought it which meant that it was leaking water like a sieve - so could it be the damp in the car is making the electrics play up? -
Message for Tomo; radar detectors 28 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Regina versus Knightbridge Crown Court, Ex parte Foot. January 29th Before Lord Justice Simon Brown and Mr Justice Mance. " Microwave radio transmissions from police radar speed guns did not constitute a "message" for the purposed of Section 5(b) (1) of the WirelessTelegraphy Act 1949, even within the extended meaning of the "message" given by Section 19 (6) Accordingly, the use by a motorist of an electric field meter to detect the presence of such emissions was not an offence under section 5(b) (i) since the device was not used "to obtain information as to the contents, sender or addressee of any message" Damn, just found this which would have saved all that one-finger typing http://www.snooper.co.uk/law.htm Any help? -
Lunatics at large 30 Oct 2001 (Forum)
The most tragic was an Ambulanceman who was seriously injured and has lost one eye. My daughter went to school with this young man. The Police who have been on local radio frequently seem to have no leads as to exactly how it is happening. It seems to occur after dark and they are assuming I think that these objects (including an iron bar) are being thrown from another moving vehicle, and have set up patrols in the Ashbourne area and appealed to the public for help. -
Gathering support 16 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Millions of Radio 2 listeners then heard the veteran presenter lash out at the scheme after he became stuck in a mile-long traffic jam on Marylebone Road, where cars have been reduced to a single lane in some places, to make way for the experimental bus lane. -
Citroen Grand C4 Picasso - Battery/connection issue? 28 Mar 2025 (Forum)
I have a 2016 Citroen Grand C4 Picasso diesel and today, I unlocked it with the key fob but the wing mirrors didn’t unfold. When I got into the car, it wouldn’t start and the main display for the radio etc was off. After some fiddling about, I pressed the button next to the display and the display came on and then I was able to start the car although a very brief message came up in red about the battery but it was so quick that I wasn't able to read it. -
Ban touch-screen controls in cars! 31 May 2023 (Forum)
I despair at the increasing trend of having touch-screen controls and feel that they are a safety risk. My older cars have physical buttons for everything (aircon, radio, demisters and so on). When I’m driving and want to operate any necessary control, such as the demister, I can feel for the button without having to take my eyes off the road. I can’t necessarily stop to operate a control, e.g. on a motorway with a sudden cold shower of rain will require me to change the heating control to stop the windscreen fogging up. -
Aygo review 23 Mar 2022 (Forum)
As a lover of small cars generally, I was mightily impressed with just how good modern ones are. This one had everything I could possibly need, air con, climate, dab radio, Bluetooth, Android pairing , reversing camera etc etc. The 3 cylinder engine pulled nicely, with a very agreeable sporty sound, nice slick gearbox, well damped ride, decent handling, safe rather than ultimately sporty. -
1994 Opel Astra Convertible 1.6 8v - Battery Died. Wont Start after Jumping 3 Apr 2016 (Forum)
It started fine earlier and I wanted to clean it out as previous owner had a dog and it was full of hair. no offence to anyone just wanted to clean it lol. had the ignition on for a bit of radio whilst doing so and didn't think about the battery like a fool. so anyway, when I went to start it to move it back on my drive, it cranked over and slowly died. put some jump leads from my van to the astra ( the right way) and it just cranks of absolutely fine but will not fire up. has anyone any ideas what might need resetting or something that could of tripped when the battery died. it just doesn't want to fire up at all but will crank over fine or is there a set procedure to starting after battery has died or been replaced? -
Dangerous Driving; Enquiery 6 Oct 2015 (Forum)
This was 9 days after completing a second speed awareness course. The officer was on his own but called in the incedent over his radio with the driver and car details, he said the driver would be expecting a court summons. A week later the employee said that the officer had called them up on the phone and said that he was not taking the case any further largely due to the fact that they had been polite and compliant. -
Toyota Avensis - visual reference indicator on fender / hood2 21 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Is there any similar device that I can use for this purpose, such as rear view mirrors on the edges of the hood, radio antennae, etc? Would fitting of such an object require either drilling or welding on the body? -
Ford Fiesta 1.3 (1995) - Power Failure in Ford Fiesta 9 Jan 2013 (Forum)
Last night whilst driving home, the car started to show signs of power failure again. My wiper blades slowed down, headlights dimmed and the radio switched off. What other issues can cause power failure as I am confident it is neither the alternator or the battery. A friend of mine says that I may have a problem with the Earth wire? -
Vauxhall Astra G 1.7cdti z17dtl - engine management light. 15 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Also when i revved it slighty splutterd then revved fine. So i thought better get this to a garage, so turned off all electrics (lights, radio, etc) which sorted out the crazy dials. As i set off i discovered the power steering wasn't working either but after a few miles started working again and the interior clock was back upto full illumination. -

Vauxhall Astra G Coupe/Convertible (2000 - 2004) - 03 1.8 Loss of Power Steering and Electrics 8 Oct 2009 (Forum)
The power steering cuts out, the ABS and Traction Control light up on the dash, all electrics cut out for a split second and come back on (including radio), after a couple of mins the power steering then eventually kicks back in. While all this is going on the engine does not cut out. However if i turn off the engine and try to restart, its as if the battery is disconnected and its completely dead. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 99 1.8 battery connection?? 19 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I went to start the car this morning, turned the key once the glow plug light had gone out and got just a click as if the battery was completely flat. But all lights, radio, etc. work fine. Not releasing the key, I got this clicking sound about once per second along with the electrics going haywire (dashboard lights coming on, windscreen wipers, etc). After maybe 2 or 3 attempts at this, it decided to start. -
Dangerous Foreign Lorries 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Yesterday morning our local radio station had a "shock headline" piece about the number of foreign registered lorries which failed roadside inspections. The piece said 47% checked by VOSA had serious safety issues. As usual there was the good old Brit wagon driver saying how wonderful our system was, apparently we have 6 weekly servicing and checks to ensure the roads aren't full of UK registered death trap wagons and other countries simply don't have the checks we do. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.9 TDI Boot release button on dash not working 19 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Only issue now is, and it could be a coincidence, since this job, the button on the dash to open the boot has not worked. The car was only repaired the other day with the heater matrix, and when I picked it up the radio said it needed a code (I luckily had the stereo book in the glove box so could enter it). I had no reason to open the boot that night, but noticed it the next day. I press the button but hear nothing, suggesting it isn't even trying to open the boot. -
Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 2000 1.5 Coolant Temperature light - on or off? 5 Apr 2009 (Forum)
I also pulled the leads off the old cars sensor and the light still come on when the ignition is turned on. I took the radio out of the old car and reached round the back of the instrument display and removed the bulb for the warning light, I then did the same to the new car only to find that the new instrument display does not have removable bulbs at the back! -

Renault Laguna II (2001 - 2007) - 2003 1.8 Trip computer won't show miles 29 Sep 2008 (Forum)
My 2003 Laguna 1.8 16v recently had the gearbox replaced as a result of differential failure. During the repair the battery was disconnected so I had to re-code the radio. (No problem) However the digital odometer and trip computer will now only indicate metric units, so my 110,000 mile car now has 177,000km, my economy is measured in litres per hundred km etc. Does anyone know if it can be reset without resort to a Renault dealer ?
