406 driveshafts 12 Nov 2006 (Forum)
The reason I ask,is because I've been plagued with a slight vibration on mine, for 12 months, and despite doing the obvious of having tracking checked, wheels balanced etc,I haven't a clue as to what's causing it.It sort of comes on at about 60mph plus, and is there for about 3 seconds, goes away for the same amount of time, comes back............... Got talking to a lad at my local ham radio club the other night, who,as well as being a tyre fitter, told about this supposed weight,as he also has a 406,albeit an older variant. Is he telling the truth,or is he having a giraffe, and if he is telling the truth, and it does exist, how, apart from being ripped off from the dealer, can I get it so it's spot on? -
vw polo intermittent elec fault 7 Sep 2006 (Forum)
hi i have a 2002 polo 1.4 75bhp, twice in a week it has failed to start, when this happens i loose my dash display, no warning lights or background light, although the gauges work. when this happens it will turn over but not fire up. the rest of the dashboard lights work, radio, fan, h lights indicators all good but no start. whilst we were being towed there was a sudden jolt in the chain and everything came back on and started. 5 days later same again and recovery bloke messed with fuses and wires under dash, 20 mins later it started but he didn't know what had happened?? -
A small rant 4 May 2006 (Forum)
I'm sorry to inflict this on you, but an ad currently running on Virgin Radio for a certain no-win-no-fee law firm is driving me up the wall! The example bloke in it claims he was working for a national firm of tyre fitters when the jack collapsed on the lorry he was working under crushed him. -
Part ex and car tax 30 Apr 2006 (Forum)
He's paid for the tax on top of the price of the car. They've offered him 4 grand for his 52 plate 1.6 Focus with no driver's door lock or radio which I thought was a decent price. Question is - who does the tax belong to? I have a feeling that the dealer has included that in the value of the car and of course, ringing up and asking is sure to get the answer "price included the tax disc". -
Sony Head Unit Problem 8 Nov 2005 (Forum)
I have a Sony Radio/Cassette with 6 disc multichanger. Model number XR-CA400. For no apparent reason, the volume up button has started to give me problems. Sometimes it will just increase the volume to full volume all by itself, as if I was holding the button in. -
2002 MB C Sports Coupe: F Susp noise 21 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Last year on holiday in France I noticed that there was a squeaking noise which appears to come from the front suspension when the car goes over some (not all) bumps. It isn't very loud (well below normal radio level) but is annoying once you spot it. It only occurs in hot weather. It went away when I returned to this country. With the warm weather it is back. As the car has only done about 18k and the warranty is about to expire any clues as to what it could be before I try the dealer, who I hope will sort it out gratis. -
Free car - but no keys / V5 ??? 27 May 2005 (Forum)
Anyway, the downside is there are no keys (it is unlocked) and no V5. I will be given a letter from the current owner (a local radio station) to confirm they have the legal right to give it away, but are there any other problems anyone can think of? I was either going to a) break it to sell individual parts and then scrap what is left, or b) sell it on whole to a fellow V-dubber to do exactly the same, or if they are very brave, restore. -
Citroen AX (L) - No lights! 24 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Hi, Today my little AX, which is in great general condition (30000 miles) is suffering. I notice this morning that my clock stopped, my front headlights do not work, and my radio memory is playing up, and my immobiliser is, well, immobilised. Now, after consulting the handbook, many of the faults are associated with one particular 20A fuse. I have changed this fuse (which actually looked fine), but the problems are still there! -
Automatic traffic announcements. 4 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Given that many people (me included and DD excluded) don't appear to RTFM, I wonder how many drivers out there have modern RDS radios in their cars and don't realise they also have a Traffic Announcement facility. Driving home on Tuesday I found the service invaluable as we approached and successfully avoided chaos and long delays on the M2. -
Good old-fashioned cassettes 28 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I've noticed that the BR has been getting a little 'heavy' lately so, in the intention of lightening the mood, I've started this thread. How many of us out there still have only a radio/tapeplayer in the car rather than a CD/minidisc/mp3/wax cylinder player? And if you do have a tape player, what mouldy, broken old tapes are languishing in the back of your glovebox? For the record, I only have a tape player and I can muster the best of Paul McCartney, Tony Bennet Swings, The Three Tenors, Round the Horne Vol 2 and several home made ones including The Rocky Horror Show, Barry White, Robbie Williams' Swing When You're Winning and a 70;s compilation. -
Progress over 5/10 years 21 Jun 2003 (Forum)
If uou look at a "basic" Astra or Focus etc just now, it will come with PAS, electric windows, air con, CD radio, airbags etc as standard, whereas as recent as 5 years ago these things would probably all have been optional. We know that top of the range BMs etc have sat nav,, clim control, cruise control etc but what do you think the basic Astra or Focus equivalent will have as standard in 5 years - xenons? -
First time buyer-how can i make a best 3 Mar 2003 (Forum)
The car I have in mind is new Nissan Micra S 1.2L 5dr automatic ( list price is £9395) The standard options are: PAS, ABS, front e/w, immobiliser, remote locking, radio/cd player. As I have no experience in bargaining with a dealer, I would like some advice as to how much discount I should be aiming at realistically; and what figure I should start off with as an opening offer? -
Congestion Charges. 28 Feb 2003 (Forum)
The five methods they plan to use are car, bicycle, PTW, running and horse & cart! Our intrepid traveller leaves a car park near Wandsworth Bridge roundabout and heads for the radio studio at Leicester Square. So far the results are: Monday: Car - 44 minutes Tuesday: Bicycle - 30 minutes Wednesday: Scooter: 31 minutes. When asked today why it took longer on the scooter than the bike, the reporter replied "Well you have to stop for red traffic lights on a scooter". -
Yaris remote locking 23 Dec 2002 (Forum)
I checked the battery which was a bit low (3V) but have tried two different new batteries (GP and Rayovac) with no real improvement. Any ideas? Does the car have a separate aerial for the remote, or does it use the radio aerial? Might it just be the cold weather? Does it need a 'special' battery? The original battery reads about 3.05V, but only drops to 2.8V when I press a button. Both of the new ones read 3.3V no load, but drop to about 2.7V when a button is pressed. -
How to love a banger? 31 Oct 2002 (Forum)
What advice do I give to make his recent purchase a lasting goer. For this purpose, assume he is of the 'if it makes a funny noise, turn the radio up' school of motor ownership. He has bought a K reg 1.5 diesel corsa. One owner, FSH, 80k miles mainly motorway and (get this HJ) oil change every six months from new. There is little chance it will be looked after quite like its previous owner. -
My perfect car 23 Oct 2002 (Forum)
The S2 sounds like a car that would be worth trading in my 20V Coupe for, and there are a few around the £7K mark (although they all seem to be in Scotland). Well outside my normal price bracket, but I started listening to Radio 4 at the weekend, so perhaps I'm getting too old for bangers. Anyone know anything about these? Any notable weak spots? HJ's Car by Car Breakdown doesn't mention this model, so presumably a real rarity with nightmare parts availability, but I'm already used to that after the 20V. -
Tune Up. 9 Nov 2001 (Forum)
All of the HT woes/poor starting have been cured now it has a 20 minute each way drive and actualy gets warm twice a day! Big/Little End noises go away when the radio's turned up. ;-) -
Citroen C3 - 2022 You! says "Cannot connect" when calling 19 Sep 2025 (Forum)
Bluetooth works for Spotify and answering calls absolutely fine, no issues at all. However, when trying to make a call myself, it cuts off and goes back to the radio home screen. When I look at my phone when trying to make a call via my car, it ends the call with the messaging saying it "cannot connect". I have tried different phone numbers and none work. I have tried turning Bluetooth off and on via both car and phone, I have switched car off and on and did a reset of the infotainment system and it doesn't seem to work either. -
Buying Advice - £5K 22 Jul 2025 (Forum)
Reliability & Simplicity. Preferably; Decent bit of oomph when required. A bit more tech than my Focus (2011 radio feels quite dated now). Manual gearbox. Thanks! -
Portable car player 5 Feb 2025 (Forum)
I have an old VW 2005 Passat estate and I want to update the stereo so we can all connect our android and apple phones. It's a radio and separate cd which I understand is double din and when I looked the cost of a decent replacement plus fitting was a few hundred I'm quite happy to have a portable touch screen car player so no fitting.
