  • Lumpy Skoda 30 Aug 2003 (Forum)
It was exhausting normally, just "Phutting" every now and again, and when it did, the exhaust swung quite away, as if it were releasing quite a high pressure. I am having trouble putting this together. My mind keeps straying towards a fuel leak, fuel coming out (smell), air getting in (rough running) but why would the exhaust be acting strangely?
  • 1.8 Focus fuel consumption 11 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Am I being unrealistic in my expectations of fuel consumption from a 1.8 Focus? For some years I have driven Vauxhalls. two 2.0L Cavaliers and more recently a 2.0SRI Vectra. My first 2.0L Vauxhall was pre cat and I always returned in the region of 8.5 miles/litre (39 - 40mpg)on a mixture of motorway cruising at 85 - 90 and driving to work on semi rural roads.
  • Unleaded vs Unleaded Plus 30 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Also, is there not an additive I could use with normal unleaded petrol to kill the noise instead of having to use the Unleaded Plus fuel? Thx. S.
  • Peugeot 205 XS Won't Start 15 May 2003 (Forum)
I've been having a few problems with my Peugeot 205 1.4 XS. These started off with a fuelling problem that led me to change the fuel filter, then fuel hoses, then fuel pump, then stripping down the carb and cleaning it and finally fitting a secondhand carb. The fuelling problem now seems to have cleared (the problem was that the car would stall/judder at low revs, but still worked fine at higher revs resulting in a jerky ride to say the least).
  • Air leak in fuel system [Diesel] 3 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Xantia 1.9 TD 1995 92000m NB. Same Xantia as in Smokey start thread. I'm pretty sure I've got a leak somewhere in the fuel lines, when the engine is cold is runs rough for 5-10 seconds before smoothing out. After that its fine. Filters, oil etc & glow plugs are fine (brand new Beru), theres no major smoking though if you rev it while its having its coughing fit it will puff white smoke but not a great deal.
  • Kangarooing/Stalling 5 Feb 2003 (Forum)
I have replaced fuel filter and cleaned fuel pump filter to rule those out. a mechanic told me that it is probably a valve sensor that costs around £60 second hand as it is attached to other stuff and you have to buy the lot, the problem is I don,t know which sensor to buy because there are lots of them, can anyone put me right on this please?
  • best and worst MPG 12 Nov 2002 (Forum)
My worst non-motorsport MPG was in my 620 Ti when on a top speed charge across Germany on the autobahns. My average 36 MPG dropped to just 18. I even stopped at a certain point to check if the fuel cap was on properly and fuel wasn't being somehow sucked out of the tank in the slipstream as I could almost see the fuel gauge dropping. Then again at an indicated 150 MPH what do you expect. CMark
  • Polo Problem 19 Jul 2001 (Forum)
The car also feels a bit underpowered when cold and feels like its misfiring slightly. Remedy?: I thought it was a fuel pressure problem and bought a 2nd hand fuel injector of a low mileage car which did help bit but hasn't cured it. I've also replaced the temperature sensor, spark plugs and HT leads. I've also checked and cleaned all of the electrical connections and they seemed fine.
  • Post-Apocalyptic Car Usage 11 Jul 2025 (Forum)
With no petrol or diesel at the pumps, we’d be forced to find alternatives,  perhaps by producing fuel from food sources, like biofuel. In such a scenario, only older vehicles with diesel engines might stand a chance, as they can run on straight vegetable oil with minimal modification. Unfortunately, those vehicles are rapidly disappearing, sc***ped in favour of modern engines that can’t handle unrefined fuels.
  • Ford Fiesta - Overfilling petrol tank? 29 Nov 2020 (Forum)
What's the worst that could happen when you overfill your tank by a quid or two?   I know and have seen that in hot weather, fuel could expand and leak from the fuel inlet - which is obviously dangerous.  I suppose with the cooler weather we're experiencing, that's not an issue?   Having realised that my tank was full, I went for a drive for 2 - 3 miles to burn some of it off.
  • If you care about MPG, are lexus cars a bad choice 1 Sep 2020 (Forum)
But when I look on  Honest John's website , the real mpg for lexus cars is always "bad"? Is Lexus a bad choice if fuel consumption is a concern? The UK does not have cheap fuel prices. Also, I live in the Yorkshire Pennines, so it is very hilly here. My current i10 struggles up hills, it goes up them fine, but you can hear it struggling.

  • Vauxhall Astra GTC - Car not starting from cold start 12 Jul 2019 (Forum)
The only way I can guarantee a start is; by spraying the tiniest amount of easy start direct into the air filter, however this is a last resort. I have tried several things, a fuel filter change (which did sort the problem for a few months), glow plugs changed. I am now being told it may be a ‘fuel pump’ issue, however this is a pricey problem to have & can’t guarantee it will resolve this issue.
  • Ford Monde - Ford Mondeo 2008 Petrol Cranks but won’t start 25 Apr 2019 (Forum)
Hi All, Hope you can help. Ford Mondeo 2008 petrol cranks but won’t start. I did replace the fuel pump in March and it failed in two weeks so upon complaining Halfords replaced it and found it to be faulty. I went away for Easter break and since my return I did 200 miles and the same problem has come up and the Green flag technician thinks it’s fuel pump again.
  • Vauxhall Mokka replacement 27 Nov 2018 (Forum)
My daughter currently runs a Vauxhall Mokka 1.6 petrol which while she likes the driving position, however its rubish on fuel also her family is getting larger....she would like to change it for something bigger to accomadate three under 6year old children and automatic and better fuel compsumsion for her work commute...diesel would give the best mpg but I am worried of potential problems if she goes down the diesel route...she does do over twelve thousand miles a year....does an economical seven seater petrol engined alternative exist...your advice would be much appreciated as I am just getting more confused the more I look at possibles.

  • Ford Ka - Performance/economy and coolant level. 15 Feb 2017 (Forum)
For years my son has claimed the performance and fuel economy of his 05 Ka significantly worsens when the level in the coolant reservoir drops below the minimum (even though it's not empty). Although not pretending to be smart enough to understand this, I can't see any reason why this should be... yes, I can see how performance and fuel economy can vary for a variety of reasons (including faulty sensors/electronics), but not related to the level in the coolant reservoir.
  • Drivers on miniroundabouts - Undertaking and overtaking on junctions 14 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Waiting in a line of traffic for car directly in front of me to turn right. 1st car behind me undertakes to get in front of him. 2nd car behind me then undertakes to get 1 car ahead on a keep clear just before traffic lights.  ???? 2. Went to get fuel at a large supermarket and on the main road entrance there is a painted mini-roundabout, as I was turning, indicating a yoof  overtook me and then when he realised he was going to hit me tooted (a lot) and then turned into the petrol station and proceeded to nonchalantly fuel up.
