  • Vauxhall Movano – which powertrain is best? 7 Oct 2013 (Ask HJ)
I’m thinking of buying a Vauxhall Movano, but can’t work out if I need front-wheel or rear-wheel drive? Also, which engine is best?
  • Peugeot 2.2 Diesel - Runaway Peugeot 2.2 Diesel 20 Aug 2013 (Forum)
all of a sudden engine started Missing, say 10 times, then power dropping, started to smoke out exhaust pulled into hard shoulder switched off engine as soon as I switched it off engine started to runaway at absolute max revs - very black smoke Let out the clutch in gear and stopped it after max 2-3 secs (FRIGHTENING!) all the above happened in less than 1 minute, no warning lights showed. Towed to Garage! in the garage: the EGR valve is showing as coked up and stuck, diagnostics are pointing to EGR problem 2 years ago EGR was also coked up and engine mgmt lite came on.
  • Citroen - 2004 2.0 hdi Snapped cambelt at 61,500miles 24 Jul 2013 (Forum)
I bought my Citroen C8 2.0 HDI LX on the 1st May this year - 5 months ago. Last week at 61,500 odd miles the cambelt snapped on the motorway. I had the car towed to a main dealer where they were 99% sure of cambelt failure but they would have to remove the engine to see for sure. 2 days and £750 later I was informed that the cambelt had indeed snapped and that, because they could not get the diesel injectors out, a new engine would have to be fitted at a cost of £5986.52 I contacted the customer complaints dept at the car retailer where I bought the vehicle and they informed me that my 3 month warranty had expired and unfortunately they would not be able to help me.
  • Ford Mondeo estate 2006 Tdci 130 - Mondeo diesel - smoke on startup 26 Apr 2013 (Forum)
2-litre Tdci, 47k miles, mixed use including local, long motorway trips and towing. The car was serviced by the book until about 4 years old, and annually since then. All done by local Ford dealer. Last service a month ago. Car starts first time and runs well, with plenty of power and nicely smooth.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B - Vectra diesel diagnosing injector seals 18 Mar 2013 (Forum)
So I changed the leak off pipes today and tried to start it after the job was complete and still no go. Tried tuning it over for about 5 minutes, jumping it from another car. Then I towed the car so it was facing downhill, tried turning it over for another. 2-3 minutes and it started. The issue now is that I'm not sure if it is 100% fixed. I don't want to be away from home and find it won't start.
  • Audi A3 + S3 (1996 - 2001) - 2000 1.8T - Shuddering/misfiring - Help! 23 Feb 2013 (Forum)
On the way home last night my A3 (2000, 53k) started "Shudderring" and losing power. I made it home and called the AA in. They said Coilpack and towed me to a local garage. The car was ran through the computer and identified injector, MAF troubles etc etc. Again, this could be caused by the a coilpack failure. The coilpacks were duly checked and each replaced but to no avail.
  • Q7di Q7 - 4x4 choices 3 Oct 2012 (Forum)
I'm looking for a versatile, all-round, family vehicle which has high seating and space that a 4x4 would usually offer, but still have a premium feel or status with some level of performance. Some mild off-roading (green laning) would be good but I don't need any major towing capability. A mini bus (MPV) is not really an option, but a consideration against over-priced, over-rated 4x4s that will not be used to their true potential. I would appreciate any opinions on cars, comparisons and encourage constructive debate on the points I made, both for and against.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV - VW Golf oil leak - new engine?? 25 Feb 2012 (Forum)
I went back to my car after 15 minutes and found a huge pool of oil under it, popped the bonnet to find oil had also come out of the dipstick and there was no oil left.  It was towed to a garage and I was told it had an oil leak around the pump area and that the engine was making a bad noise. I was advised not to drive it and replace the engine. I am a student and replacing the engine is not an option for me.
  • Chrysler Voyager (1997 - 2001) - 99 2.4 Car won't start - Immobiliser problem?? 13 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Since driving it home from Leeds (roughly 30 miles) we have not been able to drive/start it. We have had the RAC out to it, they couldn't get it to start and towed it home. We then called an auto-electrician who has been working on it without any luck. The engine won't start. The battery won't stay charged. The main problem was it started, runs for a few seconds then cut out.
  • Mitsubishi ASX - Head or Heart. Diesel or petrol 4 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Realistically except on annual holidays the car will mostly contains 1 person or sometimes 2 and we don't tow anything so perhaps I am being greedy. I like the thrust my 2.0HDI Peugeot has now. Could someone out there with a 1.6 petrol reassure me it is adequate and not a bit sluggish. I built a spreadsheet and allowing for the £2250 difference in price, 40 mpg versus 49 mpg and diesel being 10p a litre more expensive the petrol is cheaper to run until 125000 miles.
  • Vauxhall Zafira 05 - 2.2 SRi 16v Petrol - Urgent Help Required - Zafira is tottaly dead. 11 Jan 2012 (Forum)

  • ford mondeo 03 2ltr diesel automatic - glow plug warning light flashing 4 Jan 2012 (Forum)
hi, im after any suggestions of what to try next....i have just changed the camshaft position sensor, as suggested by many people as a potential resolution, which has helped - i was towed home last week as i couldnt go more than 100ft with out the light coming back on, but as soon as i go over 50mph, the warning light comes on. if i dont increase my speed, it just flashes with no impact on performance, and stopping/restarting resolves the problem.
  • NISSAN PRIMERA 2.0 PETROL 52REG - engine MAF-LAMBDA SENSOR 22 Dec 2011 (Forum)
Have got a problem with my wifes car.About a month ago it stalled and would not start,we went back two days later to tow it to a garage. On arriving at the car i decieded to see if it would start. It did so i drove it to the garage,we got there and they said if the engine diognostic light wasn/t on they wouldn,t be able to get a fault code.so we left and since covered 368miles fully loaded and in all driving speeds around town and motorway, not a moments trouble.Until now !
  • Citroen Grand C4 Picasso - liability for repair costs for broken cambelt 28 Oct 2011 (Forum)
The cam belt failed two weeks agoon our car  when we were on our way back to the ferry in france -towed on and off and back home.  The car, a citroen c4 grand picasso had only done 30000 miles and has a full service history, bought from citroen dealer at 2 years old. The car has been sitting in a citroen service centre since then whilst we negociate with the garage and citroen who asked us to pay for an "investigation" to be conducted on the car.

  • any - Overall feelings about reliabilty 15 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Maybe I am tempting fate here, but in all that time I have only ever been stranded twice, and only once had to call a tow truck. Maybe we have been lucky  but according to the doom merchants there are some real dogs in my list of cars: Triumph herald 948 triumph herald 13/60 triumph herald 12/50  swing axle failure - should have fixed it - it had been knocking for ages!
  • Renault Clio 1.5 DCI mk 2 2002 - Oil in coolant, what is wrong with my car! 21 Aug 2010 (Forum)
After a few minutes, I opened the bonnet and found oil smoking at the back of the engine area. This all happened within a matter of minutes. The car was towed home and left for a couple of weeks as we were going on holiday. Three weeks later, the car starts first time and the engine seems to run fine. I am told that the oil has come up through the coolant.

  • Volvo V50 (2004 - ) - Insulted at the Volvo dealers 3 Jan 2010 (Forum)
The alternator in the Volvo (2004/05, 75k) died whilst in my nearest city and so it was towed to the nearest main dealer. The AA man told me of a recent client who had got a stonking part ex deal on a new toyota - something like 2-3k down and they replaced their current motor with a new one - same model.
