I am totally mystified as to how my diesel Ford Mondeo got contaminated with petrol. Last week I filled up with diesel at my local supermarket and drove...
  • Drivers on miniroundabouts - Undertaking and overtaking on junctions 14 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Waiting in a line of traffic for car directly in front of me to turn right. 1st car behind me undertakes to get in front of him. 2nd car behind me then undertakes to get 1 car ahead on a keep clear just before traffic lights.  ???? 2. Went to get fuel at a large supermarket and on the main road entrance there is a painted mini-roundabout, as I was turning, indicating a yoof  overtook me and then when he realised he was going to hit me tooted (a lot) and then turned into the petrol station and proceeded to nonchalantly fuel up.

I drive a BMW M2 Competition and from new I have endeavoured to use BP Ultimate. On 17 March I filled up at my local BP and paid £1.739 per litre. I...
  • Any - Tesco diesel probe: Branksome filling station stay 26 Sep 2014 (Forum)
A number of vehicles broke down shortly after filling up at the station in Branksome, Poole, Dorset, on 18 September. The forecourt has been dug up and the supermarket is carrying out "further research" after tests on the fuel were inconclusive.   http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-29375776
  • Renault Clio - Fuel gauge incorrect 28 Aug 2022 (Forum)
In the past, I have been running low and I have but £10 in just to get me to a supermarket and the gauge doesn't move, so maybe this issue will be something similar and it will sort it self out. if I run the fuel tank low.   I have read about disconnecting the battery and it will reset everything, but need a code to set everything up.
  • Any - Bio-diesel 3 Oct 2010 (Forum)
He related an incident that he had recently  with his new diesel vehicle when refuelling at quote a major supermarket netwrok that sells its own brand fuel unquote.  They sell the new ultra-low-sulphur-diesel mandated by the EU for next year, including the bio-fuel proportion. His problem appeared to be that his car fuelling pipe kept blowing back and triggering the handpiece shut-off,  so he went back to the supplier and complained.
  • Increased mpg - redex or superunleaded? 15 Mar 2010 (Forum)
At 37 mpg combined official I'd expected about 30 mpg. The car had been serviced, oil and filters, and is runnning fine. I've always use supermarket unleaded but decided to try BP superunleaded. I also put in some redex fuel/additive injector cleaner. Its only been a few days but I've noticed the fuel gauge not moving down as fast compared to before.
  • Who’s fuelling who? 29 Dec 2012 (Ask HJ)
I always find V-Power fuel to be really good on engine of all the fuels that I have used over the years. Does this mean using supermarket fuels result...
  • VW Golf - Petrol Problems 20 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Filled up at my usual supermarket petrol station this morning. The first thing i noticed was how much longer it took, followed by the amount of fuel it dispensed (56 litres) The capacity of my cars tank is 55 liotres, and the low fuel warning light had not come on.I complained at the desk & was told that customers had complained the previous day & that the pump had beel inspected overnight & the calibration checked My complaint was logged & sent to head office.
  • Shell Optimax Petrol 8 May 2003 (Forum)
Recently switched from Supermarket petrol to Shell optimax (filled full tank when on empty) and I get the impression that my fuel consumption has improved. I havent checked the figures but given my average driving style, routes and use of air con I feel that I am getting more miles from a tank in the last journey.
  • Fifth Gear: 'cooking' versus premium diesel 14 Oct 2011 (Forum)
This passed me by at the time, so apologies if it's been covered before:  here's a link to Fifth Gear's test of V-Power and Ultimate diesel versus ordinary supermarket stuff, using a newish Citroen C5 2.2 as the testbed (4 minute video clip). Both the premium fuels gave 161bhp compared with 155 on the ordinary stuff.  What WAS upsetting was that V-Power and Ultimate were 100.9 pence per litre at the time  :-/ 06 Vauxhall Signum Elite £7699!! 27 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Thats 12 and a half grand off!! Now I know the thing drinks fuel and the low speed ride isn't up to much but that's silly money....I'm almost tempted! Steve
  • Vectra 2004 - "pinking"? 23 Dec 2006 (Forum)
I have had my 2004 Vectra 2.2 Sri Direct for around 2 years now.Recently it has developed a noise that I can only describe as "pinking".I have had it looked at by the Dealer and changed my fuel from Supermarket stuff now and again to BP Unleaded, but after several tankfuls of B.P. it is still the same. It seems to be noticeable in 3rd and 4th at lower revs when there is a bit of strain on the engine. It concerns me as it never used to do it.
  • Subaru Legacy Engine flat spot 17 Aug 2004 (Forum)
It's a non turbo petrol engine but it almots feels like 'turbo-lag'. I though at first it was caused by cheap supermarket petrol but switching to a proper brand has not helped. Could it be fuel filter, HT leads or...? Thanks. Sad Chicken
  • Best buy for £20k 31 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Having just opted out of the good old company car, I've got £20k to spend on a new, ex-demo or car supermarket car. I do 40000 miles per year, mainly motorway and A-Road. I will be keeping the car for 3 years/120000 miles (ouch!). Running and purchase costs will be funded by employer's car allowance, the ususal 12p per mile for fuel, plus tax relief etc.
  • petrol bias 26 Apr 2002 (Forum)
The first a feeling that your growing biased to the manufacturers regularly and increasingly giving them the benefit of the doubt. And secondly regularly endorsing often the more expensive branded fuels offered by esso and shell etc. especially for high performance or sporty models. I know of two police forces that fill all there vehicles including patrol cars and high pursuit vehicles at the local supermarket, strange given what you say about performance and damage?
  • Ford Mondeo Estate 61 plate - Ford 1.6TDCi & engine malfunction - limp home mode 1 Jan 2014 (Forum)
As this has happened twice in 4 months the garage made some further calls to Ford who told them that the additives that supermarkets add to diesel are not the same as the additives big brands add to diesel.   So although I'm doing nothing wrong buy using supermarket diesel when you mix it with big brand diesel it causes a "gelling" in the fuel filter which reduces fuel pressure which the engine does not like, hence engine malfunction.
