  • Retirement tactics 7 Apr 2008 (Forum)
I'm going into semi-retirement soon, and the boss has very generously allowed me to keep my company car, a Feb 06 VW Passat SE diesel with the 1.9 engine. It's a brilliant car, which as done 37,000 miles in the past two years, and which gives me up to 55mpg on a run. However, I'm conscious of the fact that servicing and repairs are expensive, and as I'll be doing much reduced mileage (a run to the supermarket once a week and occasional outings) I'm wondering if it will pay me to sell the car and buy something that will cost me less in the long run and put the sale/purchase balance towards my retirement fund.
  • C5 2.0 HPI 8 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I know that at the time it was discontinued, this model was very heavily discounted, even when taking to account the big discounts on C5s already. I have been to see an example of it at a local car supermarket and it looks super. However, when it was ticking over after being started from cold, I thought it was a diesel, such was the rattle coming from it. The rattle soon disappeared and it then sounded like a ordinary, modern petrol engine, but it is worrying me somewhat.
  • Nissan Qashqai+2 - Finally traded my Tino in 1 May 2018 (Forum)
It’s got the 1.6 CDi Renault start stop engine which Honest John seems to rate. I really wanted an automatic and wasn’t after a diesel but I do enough long runs and will be driving to France this year so the fuel economy will be nice. Had Diesel vans for years so kind of know what to expect with maintenance. 12 month warranty and 2 years free servicing plus got £400 for my Tino which is what I paid for it and it’s only worth £100 now.
  • Nail In Tyre & Other Issues 12 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Have learned to use this 'James Bond' style against tail-gaters. Wondered about using 'stop smoke' additives but undecided so far.  (Diesel in Andorra 87c, France supermarkets 1.07 euros, French autoroutes 1.27 for excellum). Yesterday son called round with his 1yo Sandero. Had picked up twisted/bent 4" nail in r/o/s tyre. He borrowed my car overnight and this morning took his to local trusted tyre indy.
  • Kia Sportage 1.7 litre - Biodiesel blocked fuel filter 21 Dec 2014 (Forum)
My local Kia service garage warns against using cheap supermarket diesel whilst Kia Sportage and sister Hyundai IX35 models now have warning door stickers against using biodiesel. i regularly drive in France but have found no one aware of this problem there.
  • 2002 Ford Focus TDCi 115 - Lumpy idle after injector recode 22 Mar 2013 (Forum)
To note, I cleaned and blanked the egr a few months back, the fuel filter is changed every year (last in december) I use super (non supermarket) diesel, the cam sensor has already been changed and the glow plugs are only about a year old.   Anyone have any ideas????
  • Pre-Registered v. Nearly New 14 Sep 2004 (Forum)
I'd prefer a diesel, but this concern is putting me off a little. Am I being over-cautious about nearly new cars? Any views people may have on this would be welcome!
  • Mercedes ML250 - Help....Fuel System Needs Replacing? 14 Nov 2014 (Forum)
One thing that I do wonder is whether it could be caused with contaminated or poor quality Diesel? I usually fill up with standard diesel at the local supermarket rather than a branded filling station.   Any advice appreciated, I fear a very large bill coming my way.

  • Skoda Octavia - New or used 15 Feb 2018 (Forum)
Hi I am in the market for a new or used car (16 Plate) got some quotes from dealers for brand new car as well which was about 17k on pcp and 20k cash, was generally looking at SE L 16 plate car is about 12.5k from car supermarket, but atleast it will have a year of manufacurer warranty left to cover me for any immediate problems. i definitely need diesel as i will be doing about 20k to 25k miles but unable to decide whether to go for 1.6 or 2.0 either. 1.6 might be slightly cheaper to insure specially after the accident than 2.0 but 1.6 only has 5 gears.
  • Skoda Superb and others - Best choice of car for Executive/Chauffeur work 23 Feb 2011 (Forum)
The Skoda Superb has been suggested to me as a very good example but I would appreciate any other ideas too. I'm not too fussy about whether it is manual or auto transmission but would suggest that a diesel engine would be prefarable to an petrol one in view of the potential high mileage. In addition, can anyone advise on the best sources for such cars in the (West) Suffolk area, either dealerships or internet-based e.g. car supermarkets, and also whether buying outright would be more viable than buying on finance, bearing in mind that with potentially high mileage being undertaken, the re-sale value would now doubt fall rapidly.
  • who knows about immobilisers? Mk2 Golf 30 Sep 2006 (Forum)
    Any ideas how I by pass the alarm/immobiliser forever, as cheaply as poss.??? The car is currently in the supermarket car park {Car make added to subject header - DD}
  • Home thoughts from abroad; or vice-versa 3 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Did about 1400 miles, half of them towing the caravan, and the G/Cherokee turned in an average 20 mpg. Diesel at between 74 and 90 Eurocents (50p-60p)a litre supermarket/motorway prices. Weather in the Loire valley scorching, wine and cheese as wonderful as ever. Saw one traffic cop all the while, flashes of approaching drivers gave advance warning.

  • Any. - Reasonably priced reliable commuter vehicle. 9 Aug 2014 (Forum)
(My car has a full Toyota history) I'm not sure I want another diesel as I only average 44mpg over my ownership on my 40 mile each way motorway return. In addition each of my diesel cars have had major breakdowns (diesel related) that have cost a fortune to put right. ( negating any fuel saving and more) My wife has a fiesta ecoboost that is fantastic and I can manage 50-55 mpg on my commute but will cost more than I'm willing to spend.
  • Renault Clio - Fuel gauge incorrect 28 Aug 2022 (Forum)
I filled up my diesel car on Thursday and I did keep adding more when it was tripping the stop signal a couple of times. Got in the car and the fuel gauge had not moved to full, it was 80% full before filling up., So something is wrong.
  • Volkswagen T5 Transporter Shuttle (2004 - ) - Getting Insurance - not easy but there are answers 19 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Also beware of putting the details into a comparison site (I won't say which), getting quotes but when phoning to confirm cover (as recommended) being turned down. In the end the answer was very simple - using a large supermarket chain site brought up the right description for the car at a good price - I hope
  • Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - High mileage honda accord 22 May 2008 (Forum)
However, my budget could only buy those with high mileage from 80,000 upwards. Due to reliability, I think I prefer ex fleet to privately used from supermarket dealers. Is that right? Any other options? More specifically , I have found one petrol engine one with 2 previous owner and 82,000 mileage for 5,300 pounds but with official combined fuel consumption of 35mpg while I found another accord diesel based with 52,000 mileage for 7,300pounds with combined fuel consumption of 54mpg.
  • Mercedes W124 advice welcome 18 May 2005 (Forum)
After a weekend of polishing and cleaning it looks very presentable, just a couple of supermarket dings for dentmaster or whoever to sort. I am aiming to run it for the foreseeable future and want to do whatever is sensible to ensure longevity over short term economy. I reckon to get the fluids changed - auto trans, coolant and brake - and sort out a couple of tyres.
