Skoda Superb and others - Best choice of car for Executive/Chauffeur work - AndyBSE

I would be very grateful for some advice on which makes and models would be most suitable for use in Executive Private Hire work, mainly for use to and from Airports and other long-distance trips.

The Skoda Superb has been suggested to me as a very good example but I would appreciate any other ideas too. I'm not too fussy about whether it is manual or auto transmission but would suggest that a diesel engine would be prefarable to an petrol one in view of the potential high mileage.

In addition, can anyone advise on the best sources for such cars in the (West) Suffolk area, either dealerships or internet-based e.g. car supermarkets, and also whether buying outright would be more viable than buying on finance, bearing in mind that with potentially high mileage being undertaken, the re-sale value would now doubt fall rapidly.

Ideally I'm looking for a maximum budget of approx £10 - 12K

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

Andy

Superb is really the cheapest way into this market -

see attached - 1/4 million miles - page 2 cars from £9k with 50K on clock - 200K life left in them?

The car of choice for chauffeur seems to be a Peugeot 607 fully loaded.

I have a 1.9 PD Superb and would recommend it for this job - with reservations.

Firstly, the 1.9 PD 5 speed manual is the only version I would recommend. The 2.0 PD is a disaster and suffers oil pump drive failure. The 2.5 V6 diesel suffers VP44 pump failure and is thirsty and tax inefficient. The auto boxes are unreliable.

Secondly, the car has serious design faults which need fixing - blocked plenum chamber drains, pollen filter housing seal and rusted front suspension pinch bolts come to mind.

Fix these, keeping well clear of any VAG dealer, and I would have no hesitation in recommending this car for your job. It's a comfortable mile-eater and is astonishingly frugal for its weight and its very reasonable performance. Cruise control is a worthwhile feature for motorway use which can be cheaply retrofitted. I had this done as part of the purchase deal.

Skoda make an excellent job of screwdrivering these cars for VAG and the build assembly quality is hard to fault. On the "Briskoda" website there is a 1.9 PD Superb described with about 390k miles on the clock (taxi). The owner is well pleased.

If yor're talking real executive work(and not just airport runs)it has to be a Mercedes.

Skoda Superb and others - Best choice of car for Executive/Chauffeur work - 659FBE

But if you are running it as part of a revenue earning business, a Mercedes will quickly wreck your balance sheet.

These days, an executive will be far more swayed by a properly organised business, well presented vehicles arriving on time and in the right place and above all, by properly educated drivers. The car badge doesn't matter if the vehicle is clean and tidy - the rear legroom in the Superb is greater than that of many models supplied by M-B. As with aeroplanes, you soon tire of free gin & tonics and would give a lot for an extra foot of room.

Executives worth moving are a savvy lot.

Thats why there are so many Mercedes taxis they must be one of the most comfortable reliable cars in the world.

OP's Budget was £10-12K - Going MB he would need to go back a lot of years - E-class autos ate auto gearboxes (Valeo radiators leaked into gbox) in that "budget timeframe"

After spending a great part of my life at various airports awaiting the arrival of ‘big hitters’ from both commerce and government I can assure you that the vehicle of choice, and expected by this class of passenger ,would without doubt be Mercedes/Maybach. As for diesel !! The last thing he would expect or want, is to sit listening to the throbbing in the back ground of a diesel engine, or any engine for that matter. No, he expects to be wafted to his office/hotel in the cathedral quietness of the vehicle collecting him after a gruelling trans-atlantic flight. Whilst I have no doubt that the Skoda is an admirable vehicle in many ways I suspect that its natural environment is more likely to be Manchester airport awaiting the arrival of the Easy Jet flight from Benidorm.

New Superb does have acres of rear leg room, but executive market er no, the car should look the part and frankly that Skoda is as ugly as sin...it has to be, no one buying their own would pay for the Audi or VW badge.

You can run Diesel, a MB S320 CDi will be a haven of peace and tranquility with room to breath in the back, and that all important air suspension to iron out what passes for a road surface in Britain.
However i have seen LPG converted S classes for sale now and again, worth considering.

Probably too garish for this market, but the Chrysler 300C is an E class in an American frock.

My DiL gets chauffered regularly in this market, always uses the same company of 50 years standing, whether the gaffer, his son or one of the few mature driver's, the standards of vehicle and driver presentment are old world impeccable...suited, punctual to the very minute, respectful, no hooting at the customers house (chav local private hire practice i cannot abide), luggage carried, doors opened and closed, customer escorted...car driven defensively and safely without being slow...professional is the word.
This particular company will still be here in another 50 years.

Remember - Original Poster's budget £10k - 12k max.

It's all very well having fanciful notions about the products of M-B but in reality, an M-B you would buy for this price would be a money pit.

Bad period ('95 - '05) M-Bs are truly dreadful and will bankrupt a small business. The points made above concerning punctuality and driver presentation are far more important at this stage in a business venture.

Later on, if the business flourishes and market requirements identify a niche for a big M-B, then by all means buy one. By then, you will have learned the hard truths of working vehicle economics.

I run a small business - totally unrelated to motoring. My Skoda sits in the yard and has attracted several favourable comments from my more savvy customers. Decoded, they say "at least you're not ripping us off and spending our money on fancy vehicles".

Times are hard and customers who are worth keeping will appreciate value for money.

Agree with the Mercedes choice. True some bits can be expensive but what car runs for free? the important bit is that your running costs will be set against tax as business expenses.

I'm in West Suffolk and have a new Superb estate due for delivery here on 8 March. You're welcome to come and have a look at it if you wish.

We also live in West Suffolk (Bury St Edmunds) and a couple of years ago were chauffeured down to Heathrow - 4 adults plus 4 large suitcases plus 4 carry-on bags.

The vehicle was an immaculately presented Galaxy diesel (not sure what engine size) - it was 2 years old and had already done over 200k miles. The driver was smooth and very professional, always making firm progress, but never breaking the speed limit. The Galaxy appeared the perfect car for the airport run - comfortable for the passengers and capacious enough to absorb a mountain of luggage. I asked the driver about the choice of car, and was told that this was his second Galaxy and that he was more than happy with the economy and reliability.

Citroën C6 2.7 diesel - the most comfortable motorway cruiser this side of a Roller, big boot, loads of room in the back and a bulletproof motor. £10K will buy you a good 'un.

Wow - what a hideously overpriced car!

PS I'm not suggesting they don't fetch this money it's just that people pay a remarkable premium for unreliable rust buckets just to own a shiny star!

I would say the OP is trying to square a circle - you can't expect to offer 'executive' style service with that budget. It's either going to be a worthy but 'low status' Skoda Superb (I personally like them - I had a Mk1 1.9 130Ps diesel) Mk2 or a money-pit older E-Class/BMW 5/7-series.

If the cost of entry into 'executive' style chauffer work were so cheap, my local taxi guy, i'm sure wouldn't be charging preuim rates too!

So, reality check required - turning up with a leggy high mileage Merc/BMW or new-ish Skoda aint gonna cut the mustard - & I doubt you'd get much repeat work. I'd say you need to plan more & invest properly in a newish (and i hate to say this because i loathe them) Merc E-Class or consider the 'executive' bus approach with a mult-seater VW Caravelle or similar.

"unreliable rust buckets'??

You sure we are talking about the same car? The MB 320cdi engine has to be (apart from the 535d) one of the best diesel engines ever made. A colleague at work has a 2003 320cdi E-Class and has had few problems in over 170k except for the general items of wear and tear.

This car has a very low milage for the age and I would be suprised if it didnt go on to well over 100k, also It does lookte part for Executive/Chauffeur work.

late 90s - early noughties Mercs are renowned for rust, they are also renowned for electrical problems. That particular engine may be reliable, but the current version is suffering from engine failure on a regular basis due to faulty injectors. As Clarkson has said many times - "unfortunately its built like a Merc". Apparently they are turning the corner now from the late 90s onwards cost cutting - about time.
