  • Seat Leon 1.4 TSI - First 10 weeks. 18 Oct 2015 (Forum)
Considered a Volvo V40, nice finish but to cramped. Considered a Focus 1.6 Turbo petrol, nothing wrong with it but simply did not excite me and mpg poor.
  • Please help me choose a diesel estate car 25 Feb 2013 (Forum)
I wouldn’t mind another Mondeo, but would like something different than what I already own.   I have looked at Skoda Octavia, Volvo, Peugeot, BMW, VW and after watching an old episode of the Top Gear’s race to Blackpool, a Jag X-type. I am seeking your advice.   What left-hand drive cars should I be pursing that will fit my needs?
  • Mazda 5: brief impressions 24 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I didn't drive for long enough at sustained high speed to comment on cruising noise levels, but my impression was that it was a little louder than my Volvo or the Toyota Verso I tried recently. Not intolerable, though. The 5 has a high-mounted gear lever, similar to the Verso's. It works well enough, but doesn't quite have the delightful precision of the Toyota box.
  • Talk me out of buying an X-Type... 21 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Maybe if I was looking for a cheap deal I might buy one but I'm not after the cheapest car I can get here. It may have won some awards but it didn't ring my bell. Volvo S60: I haven't test driven this one but I am thinking I might, it looks quite nice and they are quite cheap. Anyone tried/got one and do you like it? Worth a look? Lexus: I think this would be too expensive and they don't seem too common either, is this worth examing further?

Myself and a pal went to a motor show (in Shetland, the first AFAIK) and I was drawn to the wedgy lines of the 480. On top of that, having two individual rear seats like the fronts seemed like the best thing since sliced bread!.

  • Renault Espace (1997 - 2002) - Diesel Problem Vol2 19 Sep 2018 (Forum)
Then if I do change the Espace for another car, any suggestions as to what large People Carrier I can buy to match the Espace Grand that will not have similar problems, what about a Renault Espace Petrol?, a Toyota Previa?, a Chrysler Voyager?, a Mercedes ???, a large Volvo?. Do all the modern diesel engines (common rail designs) suffer from the same high failure rates a few years down the line, or is it only Renault that got it so wrong? Post renamed as suggested (by the OP amongst others) in now hidden replies.
  • Most impressed by 17 Apr 2020 (Forum)
BMW 525 E34 - Built like a tank yet handled like a sports car these were brilliant things and sold well as a result. More reliable than later BM’s thanks to relative simplicity. Volvo 850 GLT 2.5 - Hard to believe now but the initial road tests placed this ahead of the 5 series. They handled and rode great yet would outlast you if looked after. I loved the combination and image.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace - Dad-to-be swapping small van for a LAV - which one 20 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Hi all, been a bit unsure about which car to replace my van! Hoping you can help me. Currently have 2 vehicles - a nice 2008 Volvo V50 T5 dual fuel and a battered 2005 Ford Transit Connect T200 TDDI van - the V50 being my "luxury rather fast car" and the van for work & own business - despite the van being battered and ugly as hell, it's awesome as it has a massive "trunk" that swallows anything when I use it for tip runs, Costco runs and when I move stuff.
  • New car shortlist - who's going to help? 19 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Honda Civic (great to drive but I don't think I can live with the appalling rear visibility); the Accord Tourer, like the Mondeo, is bigger and longer than we need. Waiting for the new Laguna might be an option, possibly. Finally the Volvo V50 2.0D isn't on either list as I haven't tried one yet. Thoughts anyone? Would be very much appreciated. The broker Buy-a-car seem to have some good discounts and they do PX - anyone had experience of them?

  • Got pulled. 9 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Just past Junction 21 the 4 lane section was coned to three with the RH lane out of use. Checked mirror to see a dark green Volvo coming up fast, I am doing about 100 on the clock. I had seen the car further back and alarm bells start to ring. Check mirror again and the blue lights come on, check over left shoulder, clear, signal left, pullover three lanes to hard shoulder and park bike as far to the left as I can.

A friends family had a big orange Passat estate when we were growing up that they had for decades. I loved that car for some reason. Volvo 240 DL Estate - A large box on wheels with only power steering and nothing else. These are still to be found around the world serving as every day transport. Vauxhall Cavalier Mk III L - Flogged loads of these.
  • A bland farewell 24 Oct 2018 (Forum)
A Toyota Avensis Estate for half the cost of an equivalent age CRV. The wife isn’t over the moon but if she wants that Volvo XC60/90 or another CRV then she can stump up for it, I’m done losing thousands every year on cars.
  • Choosing a second car - ideas? 10 Feb 2008 (Forum)
t have a 2+ 2 coupe anymore to replace the 200SZX, like Peugeot 407, Alfa GT,? nor a CC like VW Eos, Focus CC, Volvo C70, they don?t even have a hot (or warm) hatch like latest Astra / Golf / Focus variants). Go up a size, and the Primera is woeful compared with latest Mondeo / Mazda 6. They don?t have an MPV to tempt me from my Grandis or to compete with S-MAX, C-4, Espaces, Galaxy?
  • Toyota Prius not rubbish to drive shock! 30 Jul 2009 (Forum)
In fact I felt a sense of anticlimax back in Pittsburgh when I picked up a conventionally powered Volvo S40. Maybe Toyota should beef up the suspension, put in a slightly bigger electric motor, a six cylinder engine and market it as a fun product. Oh, hang on they do ? it?s called the Lexus GS450h. That must be really something!

  • Gear Oil Questions and Answers 15 Mar 2020 (Forum)
MTF ( manual transmission fluid ) is a term preferred by some OEMs, perhaps they think it's more descriptive than "gear oil". It doesn't call up any particular performance or viscosity. For example a Volvo MTF will not be the same as a Honda MTF. How do gear oil, atf and mtf viscosities relate to engine oil viscosities? Gear oils and engine oils are classified by 2 different viscosity grading systems.
  • Dilemma of dilemmas of dilemmas 2 Feb 2012 (Forum)
DMFs again I'm seriously considering an LPG petrol car, but Fords and Toyotas suffer burnt valves and valve recession which (factory-fit-wise) leaves Vauxhall, Saab (Vauxhall engines with higher parts costs), Volvo (higher servicing costs) and Vauxhalls overall seem to be less reliable than Fords, and with poor depreciation. The other dilemma is body style: A saloon is pretty-much ruled out, but I like having a big boot that I can just chuck stuff in without having to do a jigsaw puzzle, and I will be carting quite a bit of stuff about on these weekly trips.
  • My 1st month, 3300 miles, with an S-Max 1 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Refinement This is a good long distance car. Seats are much more comfortable than the BMW, not quite as good as a Volvo though. The front seats are sports seats with bolstered side cushions and really do hold you well. Noise from the large windscreen isn?t too bad and is probably what I expected. The gearbox is quite notchy until it is fully warmed (10 miles or 15 minutes) and requires a firm shove to put it into gear.
