  • Stalling SEAT Toledo 19 Jan 2004 (Forum)
A friend has a (new to him) L reg 2.0L 8V SEAT Toledo Automatic with about 90k miles. It seems to have the same engine etc as a Golf. It has a couple of annoying engine problems. One is an intermittent misfire/jerkiness at any speed. This problem does not last long perhaps 10 ?
  • Corsa v Micra and electric mirrors 1 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Hi I'm currently learning to drive and I need to buy a car very soon. I'm learning in an automatic so I'm a bit limited to car choice but I know I want something small, cheap and reliable. I've kind of narrowed it down to a choice between the Corsa and the Micra but I'm a bit torn. Of the 2, which (in your expert opinion!)
  • Audi Avant not accelerate 11 Jun 2003 (Forum)
I have a 1995 Audi Avant 1.9 TDi, 142,000 miles on the clock (not an automatic), serviced by a main dealer and cared for on the dot. I do a lot of mileage, much of it on motorways. In the last few months, usually when travelling up a long motorway incline, on occasion the car will accelerate up to around 70 mph, but it will not go faster.
  • First time buyer-how can i make a best 3 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I've just passed driving test at the third attempt( oh my god!) and thinking of buying my first car. The car I have in mind is new Nissan Micra S 1.2L 5dr automatic ( list price is £9395) The standard options are: PAS, ABS, front e/w, immobiliser, remote locking, radio/cd player. As I have no experience in bargaining with a dealer, I would like some advice as to how much discount I should be aiming at realistically; and what figure I should start off with as an opening offer?
  • Calling DVD and colleagues 22 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Never noticed this before and never actually seen it on a vehicle either, It is in Part 2, section 13 para 2 (e) Here is the gist. 13.-(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), no vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp which automatically emits a flashing light. (2) Paragraph (1) does not apply in respect of- (a) a direction indicator; (b) a headlamp fitted to an emergency vehicle; (c) a warning beacon or special warning lamp; (d) a lamp or illuminated sign fitted to a vehicle used for police purposes; all fair enough then one gets (e) a green warning lamp used as an anti-lock brake indicator; Pardon?
  • Cars that are Vans 16 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I read somewhere that vehicles with more than 8 seats were automatically classed as Vans by the taxman in the UK, thus qualifying for the £500 benefit-in-kind tax assessment. I know these waters are muddied by things like double-cab pickups, but I gather that the Revenue is accepting the Customs and Excise view of things that they are commercial vehicles if they have a load capacity over 1 tonne.
  • Auto v Manual 23 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Having been out with her once myself she's really starting from scratch, not helped by the fact that she in quite petrified, and has zero confidence we thought some 2002 instruction a good idea. She's keen on an automatic . . . "then I can concentrate on the road etc, not on the gears/clutch", but I seem to remember HJ and others have misgivings, as they may go out of control(?). Auto would seem less complicated, I have to agree (I was happy with my previous auto car in town) I'd value your opinions.
  • Fog lights again (FAO Robin!) 15 Nov 2001 (Forum)
My point is, on a foggy day, which demands rear fogs for safety, some cars will have front fogs on automatically. So, he will be will be flashing them for something over which they have no choice. Now, I don't know about you, but I get a bit - ahem again - annoyed if I feel I've been flashed unnecessarily (and possibly distracted).

  • Great road safety ideas from other countries 27 Jun 2020 (Forum)
And finally - If most of the USA can master zip-merging, why can't Brits do it? (Hint: obsession with queuing?)   I suspect that the prevalence of automatic transmission has led to a much wider acceptance of many of these ideas, but we'll all be driving automatic electric or hybrid cars before too long, so...
  • Nissan Pathfinder - Bought Car, Gearbox failed within 8 days... 19 Nov 2014 (Forum)
The dealer sold me an enhanced warranty that cost me another £400 above the £8000 already paid. We drove the vehicle home, and while the automatic gearbox felt a bit ponderous the vehicle appeared fine. On the following Fri, the vehicle clearly had something drastic wrong with it. On talking to the warranty company, I was informed to get a diagnostic done before they could do anything further.
  • Seat/Alhambra 2004 1.9 Automatic Diesel - Contacts failure? Unobtainable part 7M3713203e-mcu 17 Apr 2013 (Forum)

  • Party Transport Policies 22 Apr 2005 (Forum)
All speed cameras will be abolished and replaced by a new device fitted to your cars which will automatically slow down to the speed limit when driven though an infra-red beam. This will also apply to police cars; their device will be set to 5 mph though built up areas. Traffic wardens will be re-named Dick Turpin because, let?
  • Citroen Xantia auto gearbox problem 9 Oct 2003 (Forum)
My father-in-law runs a '99 Citroen Xantia 1.9 diesel automatic with about 35K on the clock and regular service history. It is used for a mixture of short and long runs and towing. A fault recently developed while he was on holiday in France while towing a small caravan severe wet weather.
  • Ford Transit - Speed Limiter 8 Jun 2025 (Forum)
I'm asking this purely out of genuine interest. We have a fleet of new automatic Ford Transits at work. They're unreliable as hell, but that's a different story. Anyway, they are limited to 62 MPH from factory (there's a Ford sticker in the windscreen) and the sat nav confirms 62 MPH when flat out on a motorway.
  • Toyota Yaris - bigger car on a budget! 16 Jan 2025 (Forum)
I am looking to get a  bigger car for myself, would like something  very reliable, automatic preferred, perhaps a small SUV or 4x4,would prefer a petrol budget is around £8,000 unsure whether to keep going my Yaris or get something bigger as the cabin space is tight and although the boot is generous I could do with more!
  • Qashqai 2nd gen auto - Is self charging Hybrid better for me? 19 Mar 2024 (Forum)
Want to replace my 15 plate Qashqai either with a Self charging Hybrid or 3rd gen normal Qashqai Automatic. Used of course. Now with the hybrids, I’ve read that many have flat batteries if you don’t drive often, which I hadn’t known! I often leave my car on my driveway for 2/3 days without driving and my current car doesn’t have flat batteries.
  • Skoda Octavia - 14-17k used car suggestions 3 Mar 2024 (Forum)
Usage 6k annually expected mainly on weekends to local shops or weekend getaways. Prefer max 4yrs age with 30k odd mileage, automatic, not hybrid as stay in a flat. May want to resell it in 3-4yrs to upgrade. So ideally looking at a car with good resale value. Have narrowed on Skoda Octavia 2020/2021 models, or maybe a Superb 2020.
  • Honda Jazz 2012 1.4 CVT - Honda Jazz CVT problems 15 Jul 2023 (Forum)
Hi Hoping someone can help. My wife's Honda Jazz 1.4 2012 model we have been told has some issue with the automatic gear box as it is making a whining noise when the car accelerates. Honda gave us a quote of £1500 to change the bearing and now say they can't do the job. I now have been to a couple of auto transmission specialist who have advised it is cheaper to get a second hand auto gear box and change it over.
