MoT Data for Darlington 6 May 2014 (News)
That said, those cars that do fail have some numbers significantly higher than the national average – like the failure rate for brakes, which is 28% higher than average. This is probably down to the DL postcode covering a lot of countryside, including some of the Yorkshire Dales and Teesdale, where national speed limit roads with lots of twists and turns take their toll on steering, suspension and brakes. -

Editing Error in Today's HJ Column 23 Jun 2001 (News)
Trying to convert it is likely to cause other problems, like the car running away with you. Either use the parking brake and release it against torque converter take-up. Or learn to use your left foot on the footbrake and release it gradually like a clutch as you apply pressure on the accelerator. Left foot braking is the only safe way to retain full control of an automatic car when manoeuvring. -

New Mercedes C-Class Executive SE adds value and efficiency 31 Oct 2009 (News)
Pre-Safe ® the intelligent, anticipatory safety system will trigger the seat belt pre-tensioners, close the side windows (and electric sunroof if fitted) and move the front passenger seat into the safest position (if the Memory package is fitted) if an accident is imminent. The C-Class is also fitted with Adaptive brake lights. If the driver applies the brakes suddenly and forcefully the brake lights will start to flash to alert drivers behind them. Like every Mercedes-Benz the C-Class Executive SE comes with a three-year unlimited mileage warranty and is covered by Mercedes-Benz Roadside Assistance, a unique package comprising up to 30 years pan-European breakdown assistance so long as the vehicle continues to be serviced by Mercedes-Benz Official Workshops. -
Surplus Parts Up For Grabs At Sensible Money 10 Jun 2010 (News)
"We've got to get rid of these items and this is the best way to do it. There are some exciting things there. Brakes, Shockers, Electrical and even the famous Rossini Brake Discs." The company has used EBay for these types of lines but listing fees and customers having to use Paypal instead of their own cards meant it was not satisfactory. -

A large amount of young people are taking to the road despite drinking a large amount the night before, it has been claimed. Research from breakdown firm Green Flag in conjunction with road safety charity Brake has shown that 45 per cent of drivers have risked their lives in such a fashion. These are "shocking" figures, according to Brake head of education Jools Townsend, who called for intervention from the government.Michelin Pilot Performance Tyres - Tested at Estoril 11 Jul 2011 (News)

Hyundai has improved the Santa Fe's safety kit, with three stage automatic emergency braking that will warn the driver, gradually increasing the braking force and finally apply the brakes fully to avoid a collision. Other safety tech includes blind spot detection, active cruise control and Around View Monitor, which uses a series of strategically-located cameras to present the driver with a complete 360-degree view of the car.Wednesday near-miss: Lynx Eventer 17 Apr 2013 (News)
The Jaguar XJ-S may have gracefully aged into the perfect GT car, but back in 1975, when launched, it was criticised for gawky styling. Lynx decided to do something about that and turn it into a shooting brake. And unsurprisingly, many observers felt that the Eventer offered a significant improvement to thelines of the XJS. There was no argument that it offered far greater versatility, for while the boot space was similar to that of the standard car with the rear seats in place, it increased to some 39cu ft when they were folded, with the large rear hatch affording excellent access.Automatic 'Smart City' Braking Standard on new Mazda CX-5 8 Jun 2015 (News)
The innovative SCBS system uses a laser sensor to detect a vehicle or obstacle in front of the Mazda CX-5 and if the driver fails to slow his/her vehicle appropriately, or to take avoiding action, SCBS automatically activates the brakes and reduces the engine output at the same time. In this way, SCBS helps to avoid collisions or mitigate the damage from rear-end collisions at low speeds, which are among the most common accidents. SmartCityBrake Support - how it works When driving at speeds between 2.5 and 19mph, a laser sensor mounted at the top of the windscreen detects a vehicle or obstacle in front of the car and monitors the gap and the closing speed. If the SCBS calculates that there is a risk of a collision occurring - if the driver were to take no action - it pre-pressures the braking system. This ensures a faster response when the driver activates the brakes or, if the driver fails to perform any avoidance manoeuvre or apply the brakes, an automatic braking operation is activated. Effective when the speed difference between the driver's car and the vehicle in front is less than 19mph, the system is designed to avoid or mitigate the damage from a collision. Mazda Motor Corporation is intensifying its safety-related research and development efforts, aiming for the ultimate goal of realising an accident-free and safe motorised society. Mazda intends to extend its advanced safety technologies, such as SCBS, to future new models, following its debut on Mazda CX-5, to contribute to provide all customers with driving pleasure together with outstanding environmental and safety performance. The Good Garage Guide: Passing your MoT 9 May 2011 (News)
It should settle after a couple of bounces, and if it doesn’t then it probably means a shock absorber needs replacing. The brakes need to work, obviously. If the brake pedal feels spongy then topping up the brake fluid may fix the problem and is fairly simple.Be careful though, brake fluid is hazardous so follow the instructions on the container.A Grand Monday: Renault Clio 1.2 21 Jan 2019 (News)
. For that, you’ll be getting a late Mk1 Clio with extremely good bodywork, with only a few small rust scabs to sort out at the back of the sills, and not enough to bother the MoT tester. Of more pressing concern are a need for a complete exhaust system, rear brake cylinders and a corroded brake pipe. Nothing too alarming and well within the scope of a competent DIYer. So no, it’s not a driveaway project, but it is a relatively straightforward one, and at practically scrap value, it has the potential to become a very nice little car indeed. Postcode areas in the south do tend to have a higher pass rate rate than those in the north, but those towns that are on the coast aren't as good as those further inland. The failure rates across all areas except brakes are below average, with brakes showing very slightly better than average performance. Cars registered between 2004 and 2010 actually do pretty well in the MoT and all are above the national average.Michelin Launches Two New High Performance Winter Tyres 29 Feb 2012 (News)

It also has to cover dry braking where 70% of all crashes occur. Urban conditions where 60% of all crashes occur. Straight roads where 75% of all crashes occur. Cornering where 25% of all crashes occur and where crashes tend to have the most severe consequences.Drivers leaving tyre changes to the last minute 30 Aug 2012 (News)
Tyre manufacturers recommend a change when tread depth is 3mm, while the legal minimum is 1.6mm. Braking performance in wet conditions is reduced severely when tread is at the legal minimum, and more so when tread depth falls to illegal levels. You can read more about that by clicking here .
