  • Ford Focus Creaks 21 Jun 2007 (Forum)
If you stop the car for a few minutes and restart the noise isn't there. My local garage said it was the power steering rack and track rod ends which they then replaced - but it didn't solve the problem. I have taken it back to them and they can't find anything else wrong. Any suggestions gratefully received - many thanks.
  • Solar battery 'topper upper' 2 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Just a quickie to say that we recently purchased a solar powere trickle charger for Mrs V's new Skoda. The previous owner hadn't done any mileage in it for some months and was finding he needed to charge the battery every few weeks because it was running down.

I bought a 306 xsi on a v plate and from the day I left the garage I've been getting problems with it. When running normal it loses power and "kangaroos" as though it is running out of fuel.It also idles erraticaly and has stalled a few times.

  • All - DPF regen and low EGTs 2 Jan 2012 (Forum)
A hotter intake temperature will increase the temperatures throughout the engine cycle-including the exhaust-which will make the task of regenerating the DPF much easier. Of course, there is no free lunch. Hot air is less dense than cold air-so the available power will be reduced. However, if DPF regen is a problem, you are not using very much power. The other problem is increased NOx emissions (which is why the technique is not employed by OEMs.) However the MOT emission test is very lax and does not measure NOx emissions at all...
  • Fuels and their money - advice from HJ 19 Jan 2016 (Forum)
All new cars are optimised and calibrated for the ECDC economy and CO2 lab tests on the highest grade fuels available, which are usually Shell V-Power Nitro Plus petrol and diesel. Consequently, if you use an inferior fuel, the performance of the engine and its fuel economy and emissions will be inferior   Is HJ correct?
  • Rode a Deauville today - rambling post alert 21 May 2009 (Forum)
So, after a quick call to my insurers and a lift back to the pool, I found myself astride the Luke's Deauville. Although similar in concept and power to my own 650 V-Strom, it was different in nearly every other possible way. A noisier and much more agricultural engine with vibes to be felt all the time. Mild panic at seeing the ABS light on until I got to 10ish mph.

  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 94 1.4 non starter 10 Aug 2009 (Forum)
The supply to the fuel pump relay coil is from the ignition switched 12 volt line and is sunk by terminal B6 of the ECU. The 12 v on the switched terminals of the relay is from the permanent 12 V supply. (and yes I do have a good earth on the pump connection!) Is the fault likely to be on the ECU (terminal B6 not sinking the coil current?)
  • Need help in deciding a Crossover vehicle 15 Feb 2016 (Forum)
Mazda CX5 (2.2 Diesel with 148 BHP) 2. Audi Q3 (2.0 Diesel with 148BHP) 3. Hyundai ix35 (1.7 engine might be under powered for my daily driving) 4. Kia Sportage (1.7 engine might be under powered for my daily driving) 5. Nissan Qashqai / Renault Kadjar (1.5 engine might be under powered for my daily driving and the rear passenger space is very crammed) In general I like Symmetrical vehicles so I'm not considering vehicles like Ford Kuga, Skoda Yeti, Citroen C4 Cactus, Honda CR-V, BMW X1 which are a bit odd shaped.
  • Honda Civic Hybrid - First Impressions 27 Aug 2022 (Forum)
But, having now done 500 miles in it, I have to say that it does everything really well. The big revelation is the power delivery. Although it’s the same 2.0 full hybrid powertrain as the CR-V, it now accelerates more like an EV, and gaining speed now produces a much more muted tone than previously, with simulated gear changes - all electronics as there isn’t a gearbox.
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 99 1.2 Engine sounds unhealthy chain? - video incl 10 May 2009 (Forum)
It sounds ok from cold but gets more tappety as the oil gets up to the temperature. The engine sometimes pinks (experimening with Shell V power but I am now thinking it is related to timing). My question is does my engine sound normal for a typical 1.2 16v Ecotec or is this the sound people talk about when the chian/tensioner needs doing?

  • 1.0L Corsa 1998 pinking 22 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Hi all, Got a bit of a pinking problem with my 1.0 Corsa at between 3000-3500 rpm in 4th and 5th gears. I've tried running it on Shell V-Power / BP Ultimate for a few weeks, and even given it a dose of STP System Cleanup. The spark plugs are correctly gapped, new, and look in fine condition. The engine management light has never come on (apart from briefly when starting up) which makes me think the knock sensor is fine...
