  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - 07 2.0 Loss of power, DPF flashes,TCS on, MAF sens 17 Jan 2012 (Forum)
    After several startups later that day these warning lights are on all the time. It's back with the dealership again and they're thinking the ECU is faulty - I'm not so sure but I don't know what else it could be and neither do they! Furthermore, they tell me that they've contacted Mazda and they can't offer any insight into the problem. Does anyone have any idea of what's going on here.

    The vehicle is fully roadworthy with the exception of the wiper motor which is lethargic and requires replacing but the insurance assessor is insisting that the vehicle is a cat b write off and can't be put back on the road. It is a mechanically simple vehicle with no Ecu or airbags to worry about and as an offroader has been built to cope with mud and water etc. The settlement offered is in no way sufficient to purchase a replacement vehicle of the same spec so I'm really keen to keep this vehicle on the road.

    i dont want to keep spending money on it until i know exactly what the problem is, but i think this is going to be very difficult if nothing is showing up on diognostics. one person said it maybe the ecu, someone else said the wiring and the first man at the garage who checked the throttle said the valve has made a pit in the throttle body over time, so not enough air is getting through, hence the adjustment, but im still getting the problem, he said something about drilling, which i see you mentioned but i dont know which is the best course of action. would drilling fix it?

    The fans don't always come on when temp reaches 92 but it sometimes jumps down to around 85 (without fans coming and me reving the engine slightly). Could the ECU be at fault? I really need to get my car back on the road again, i've been unable to work the last 2 weeks and keep spending more money which i don't have! Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Saab has recently been trumpeting Hirsch performance upgrades (i.e. ECU remaps) for new 9-5s, but it turns out that anything you can do to a new 9-5 can also be done to an old one, with full Saab and dealer support. This has set me thinking; key points go something like this: * I really like Saabs - the 9-5 estate in particular - and Saab dealers, and would be very happy to renew my association with them

    If I get a diagnostics test done will it just reflect what the display is showing or will it know 100% if the DPF is knackered?  I've also been told by my local mechanic that once the DPF fault is up that the ECU will NOT perform a regen until the code is cleared, is this true?  The car seems to perform ok, although av mpg is only 45 for combined usage so a little low. Bought this only 1 week ago from a garage 150miles away (Eastfield Motors in Peterborough funnily enlugh), with a third party warranty that does not cover the DPF, but they have said if I return to them they will ''sort it out'', presumably free of charge.

    Ok, instead of the normal service intervals of 17,500 miles as advertised and which is why we purchased the van, they have reduced it to have a service every 5,500 miles (which we do in about 3-4 months) and they mention the DPF light coming on is not a fault....i agree, its not - but we have this light come on every approx 4-7 days with the oil levels rising and a huge loss in MPG including when we regen the light does not turn off.. They are apparantly backing this up with the ECU readings, the computer is telling them that we are failing to comply with the correct regen procedure...if there was no problem then why the hell would VW assistance agree to get the van recovered every time & every time its in VW carry out a free oil and filter change.

      My theory is this: The remote is sending dodgy/incomplete signals SOME of the time to the cars ECU. The car starts, but the immobiliser (which can disable one of three things apparently) is disabling the fuel injectors causing the car to stall out shortly after it starts. I can move the car around car parks etc, having to restart it each time it dies, so I can't imagine anything majorly mechanical has 'failed', it rather seems to me that the immobiliser is deliberately causing a problem which the engine is unaware of, meaning it tries to work, but is prevented from doing so shortly.

      They evenutually took it to a Ford Main Dealer who also could not diagnose the problem.  They replaced the ECU and said if that did not resolve the problem, a new Instrument Panel would be required.   Strangely, the light continues to come on, mostly at traffic lights and goes off as soon as you slow down again and press the brake and clutch!

    Finally, a replacement ECU unit has been fitted – but this also has made no difference.   My ex-Renault mechanic and all his contacts have run out of ideas.

     I thought the service light was to indicate that my car had not been in for a service, lol, which is true, as I have done the things myself, that a service would do, and all just for a bit of paper. Anyway, the ECU, I'm told would not know this, and its' to indicate that something is wrong somewhere. Pointing to the O2 Sensor probably, this seems to me, to make a little sense. I should replace these as  I have owned this car for 3 years and the previous owner for three years, and neither of us have replaced the fuel filter, lambda sensor or the creank sensors.

    Well it just goes to show what a difference changing the cambelt can make to the base pump timing, and that's why the fault codes were generated. The traction control cannot work properly if the fuel injection pump is mistimed, and the ECU cannot accurately control the timing if the base setting is outside the limit. I found out today that a regular check of the base timing can be very worthwhile, and worth checking if any other fault codes are present.

    I was having a new radio re-programmed on the car yesterday and the very helpful man did another diagnostic check and said that nothing at all came up - it hasn't happened for about 3 weeks (as I haven't been over 80mph) so I'm not sure how long the ECU remembers things for?! This guy reckons I should get the ignition coil and spark plugs changed. It sounds reasonable to me (at least cost-wise anyway!) but I just thought I'd see if anyone out there could shed any light on it for me before I go throwing money away!

    I unpugged each engine connector in turn to try and locate the other end of the wires on this connector but no difference. I was just about to go for the dreaded ignition switch when I noticed a relay under the ECU. I struggled but eventually managed to unplug it and buzzed the wires to confirm they were the ones I was looking for and they were. I then buzzed the relay and found the normally open contacts were actually welded together and were buzzing when they should not have been.

    They also greased all the hinges/locks, checked tyre pressures, inspected the car underneath and also checked for stored error codes in the ECU (none found), so not bad for the price paid. The Qashqai however is another matter. My local Nissan main dealer, who is situated less than a mile from the Skoda place quoted me £190 I asked what this involved and was told an "oil and filter change".

    Guess what - next morning, get in the car and it wont start! Vauxhall think there may be a problem with injector or ecu message regarding injector as there were previous fault codes but they have been resolved. Usual vauxhall prices £300+ vat no labour for each option. Anybody got any ideas. Seems intermittent and that would suggest electrics?

    We had hardly got a mile from the car lot when the car cut out. Any attempt to give it any throttle would result it cutting out with a bang and the ECU light coming on. (It was ok on the initial testdrive.) It was able to be restarted though. We immediatly drove the car back and demanded the bankers draft back. He gave it back begrungingly. We are giving him one last chance at fixing the problems, if he has not fixed it to our satisfaction by Thursday this week we will be walking away from the deal.

    No fault codes were stored, so the dealer replaced the ignition module and plugs. No difference. Then the ECU, same again. To get to the point, the car has had 18 dealer visits in its 19 month life. Its had the above replaced, along with every engine-based sensor, but still no joy. My main problem is that nearly everytime the dealer has had the car, it performs without fault, never stores any codes, and so it comes back to me with a 'no fault' diagnosis.

    He did all of the things that most of us would, such as check the air filter, fit new plugs and HT leads and look for faults in the fuel system. It was all to no avail. It was suggested that the ECU was to blame and, as you will know, this item is far too expensive to replace in the vague hope that it could be at fault. He did the wise thing and borrowed one to try out. No joy. By now, he had to admit defeat and call in the cavalry.
