  • Skoda Octavia - 14-17k used car suggestions 3 Mar 2024 (Forum)
Have narrowed on Skoda Octavia 2020/2021 models, or maybe a Superb 2020. Have also read reviews if Volvo sS60 but surprisingly they score 6/10 compared to 8 or 9 for Skodas. VW Passat was also on my radar but it’s discontinued now - it may cause reduced resale value. Any other suggestions of cars I should look at?
  • Classic car insurance for young drivers 23 Aug 2019 (Forum)
I’d love an e39 5 series because you can get 1998 examples for around £1000, but if the cars needed to be 25 years old, I’d have to look at something like a cavalier, merc 190, Volvo, Saab, or any other car that’s fairly safe. If anyone knows anything, that would be really helpful. Thanks!
  • Land Rover Freelander 2 2010 Diesel - Transfer box 7 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Has not been abused mostly urban use. Land rover are not interested in any contribution, seems the component is from the Volvo bin of parts as it is made in Sweden. Have also just repaced n/s rear wheel bearing, something else that seems to be a common failure Had extended warranty which ran out last october, and fully dealer serviced until the last service as we dispared at the service we received.
  • Towbar Cycle Carrier - weight limit? 2 Jun 2016 (Forum)
I have a Volvo V40 and need to find a way to transport 2 electric bikes (combined weight 50kg) around at weekends.  Roof bars, and also lifting them, are not a solution as the bikes are too heavy and the car is too small to take both bikes in the back.

  • VW Passat estate - Do estates cars loose vertical space in the back? 11 Jul 2012 (Forum)
As we are looking to get a new estate we noticed that all the current crop of estates got a slopping or slightly slopping roof at the back. When we tested the A4 avant and the Volvo V60 both of our dogs couldn’t sit upright without touching the hatch glass above them.   We are due to check a Focus estate but this look a bit too narrow at a glance, does anyone know of something equivalent to a 2003 Passat in regards to vertical boot space?
  • Skoda badge snobbery 8 Jul 2012 (Forum)
People are happy to buy a Hyundai - a brand with no history at all, Mercedes - a brand that Hitler seemed to like, Japanese cars - a race who murdered British solders with remarkable cruelty and yet refuse even to consider Skoda, a noble badge from a pleasant little country that was overtaken first by teh Nazis and then by the Communists. I have three clsoe friends, all highly paid professionals currently driving a Volvo S80, Hyundai Santa Fe and Subaru Outback.  All three are in the middle of buying top of the range Skoda Superbs.  As far as they are concerned, they are reluctant to buy flash German cars but want a large, comfortable luxury car without paying for the badge.
  • Want A Quick, Economical, Sporty Car[£5000 Budget] 5 May 2012 (Forum)
Therefore, BHP should be less than 150 / engine size less than 2.2 The only cars I can find are Astra 3DR SRI, Volvo S40 2.0D Sport, Saab 9-3 Sport, Focus Sport, Fiat Punto 1.9 Sport etc.. I am running out of ideas. I would therefore appreciate any suggestions. I look forward to your replies. Thanks!
  • Cars - good design 28 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Small hatch - Ford Fiesta Small family hatch - Opel Astra Medium size hatch - Mazda 6                                      Opel Insignificant                                      Nissan QashQai, with the latest front design - overall design IMO nicked from                             a now defunct manufacturer  Posh medium sized - Mercedes C-Class saloon Larger exec saloon  - Jaguar XF - really zilch competition apart from Volvo S80 'Four wheel drive'     - Range Rover Evoque 5 door                                     - Infiniti EX The above are of course just my opinion.
  • Alfa Romeo Giulietta - Looking for a company car 5 Apr 2011 (Forum)
To get an idea of value I could have a Passat estate or a Vauxhall insignia.  I have looked at the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, the new Ford Focus and a high spec Volvo S40. I would appreciate any other ideas.
  • How about some positives for a change 16 Feb 2010 (Forum)
A Mirafiori rusted away but was great to drive, a Viva blew an engine but it had done mega miles and a wheel came off a Datsun, apart from that cars have been pretty good. A Volvo 240 had an engine go too but that swmbo had come home saying this light had been lit on the dash all day but she thought it was nothing.......................
  • Wear-outables: string, length of 13 Sep 2009 (Forum)
My long-serving Volvo S60 D5 manual will reach 100,000 miles some time this autumn. Never having run a car anything like this long before, I'm starting to wonder when I should expect predictable bits to wear out. By this I mean especially clutch, brakes and exhaust.
  • Mercedes Benz C-Class W204 (2007 -) - Lane Changing indicators 31 Jul 2009 (Forum)
It's a lovely drive and otherwise well constructed but the controls have let it down. Not since my Volvo 440 in 1991 have I felt so bad about a car. It has to go.
  • Speedometer size and position on the dashboard 16 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Why do modern cars have such small speedometers when speed cameras are springing up like mushrooms?. It used to be that speedos were right in front of you as per my old Volvo and Mercedes C class. Now I have to drive a BMW (the wifes') that has an unreadable speedo and you are never sure of your speed. The speedo is offset and equal prominence is given to the rev counter that I never look at ( whats the point on a diesel?

  • "Wrong" oil in an emergency? 11 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Just tried to check the oil level on my one-month old Volvo D5 for the first time... Dipstick is a pig to remove: it seems to be a curved dipstick made to fit a curved hole and takes a lot of persuasion to come out! How stupid is that? The last inch of the dipstick - just below the "flattened" bit with the min/max markings, is also twisted a full 90 degrees for some reason?!

  • How to get a new car for £134.19 4 Sep 2006 (Forum)
You get that nice, tactile, feel of a new car together with the smell (open the door and "new car" rushes out to your nostrils) and the interior look (if like our V70 the rest of the interior is spotless anyway)! For info; as documented elsewhere, replacement was due to the leather treatment used by Volvo's supplier reacting to sweat (and in the case of some others, hand cream) on a range of recent models. VCUK paid 50% without having to ask.
  • £3000 to spend on a motor to Geneva 26 May 2006 (Forum)
I need to be able to put stuff in it as I will be moving so tiny cars aren't going to work. My question is, what do I get? I have been looking at cheap Volvo V40s, leather clad Honda Accords and even a couple of big Toyota Surfs and tinny RAV4s. So far I am not convinced by any of them. What are the honest John recommendations for a cheap reliable workhorse?
