What's the best way to insure a hire car abroad?

I'm hiring a car in Spain for 15 days at a price of €253. The hire company want €10 per day for comprehensive insurance, which is more than 50 per cent of the hire price. I can get an independent car hire excess policy for around €40, which is obviously much cheaper. I'm a little nervous about which route to take especially as the car hire company will take €1000 deposit and on return will wash and inspect the car in detail regarding any damage. Any thoughts?

My advice is to buy a separate policy before you go.
