  • Small, petrol engined automatics - poor economy 1 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Would you say this was poor?  I would have been disappointed with less than 40mpg in my S-Max (admittedly a diesel auto) for the motorway trips.
  • What fuel consumption gaffs/efforts have you made 1 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Sold in desperation as it needed leaded petrol too. 5) The saviour of my finances, in the early 90`s recession, the new Maestro Clubman D, that could get 60MPG, drew max car allowance and ran for 130,000 miles. Boring after that as i had learnt a lesson, but for some reason as the years went on and fuel consumption became less of an issue for the pocket, it became an issue for the mind....
  • Misleading signals & Case law 9 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Briefly I was driving along a dual carriageway and as I passed a T-junction on my left (minor road entering a dual carriageway) the driver pulled out and drove into my N/S front wing. The driver said at the time he did not look as he thought I was turning left, as it appears that my left-hand indicator was on and had been on for more than 500 metres, unbeknown to me.
  • Nissan x trail - Nissan x trail 2015, horrible squeak. 29 Mar 2023 (Forum)
My nissan x trail, 2015 model, has done 100k miles and more recently, its developed a squeak, which is more audible, when driving at a speed under 15 miles. The sound happens after driving for say a distance of 5 miles and it's like a loud squeak, almost as though, when the wheel is going round, its catching onto something.
  • How wide does a gate need to be for a car and a small caravan? 4 Dec 2024 (Ask HJ)
What is a good standard width of a gate in a fence to accommodate a car or small caravan? I realize it;s not official but just looking for a sensible approximation.
  • Ford Focus Estate 2008 - 1.6tdci- Alternator 30 Nov 2016 (Forum)
Alternator is making 14.5-14.6 at idle and right when the battery indicator comes on, lights dim and voltage drops to 13.4-13.6.  The alternator is off used car but my opinion is that it-s working fine and something is taking extremly much amperage and cant seem to find what. Battery doesent die form a day to the next and the problem seems to be manifesting when engine is running. Anything I should look for?
  • Reliable diesel for a budget of 4k? 20 Sep 2015 (Forum)
(the kia felt sluggish today, it may just of been a bad example though). I almost went for another ford again but don't like the sound of the 1.6 engines with dpf and various other issues. I guess Hyundai i30's could be an option? Many thanks and apologie for the length of the post, I'm really hoping for some decent help.
  • Ford Focus - 2012 Focus 1.6 Tdci Clutch Whine 18 Nov 2014 (Forum)
I have a 2012 Focus Zetec S  1.6 TDCi  in Manual, 29000 miles, and I have noticed that very occasionally I get a whine in first gear when holding the clutch at biting point.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 05 1.6 Front Suspension 19 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Hi All I have an old style 2005 Focus Flight 3 door with 63k on the clock (I have owned from new). Last week the O/S/F suspension spring snapped, luckily only the top coil of the spring came off so no damage was done and I was able to drive it to get repaired. The next day I took it to get a new spring fitted (I know I should have got the 2 done) but I only got the 1 side done.
  • Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - 00 1.6 Central Locking Stuck in a Loop 7 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Hello there I was wondering if anyone can help me with a problem I have been having for a while now. Here goes - When the central locking on my '00 Fiesta Zetec-s is opened (with either of my two keys) it opens and then closes itself. This happens when opened remotely or with the key in either side lock. If I pull the handle at the right time I can manage to get the door open (with the locks still looping) then when I get in and close the door they lock and stop.
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 1996 2.5 V6 - Head Gasket Repair 13 Feb 2009 (Forum)
If anyone is interested, I'll post a "blog" on here of what the process is and how it goes? To start the record, the symptoms are signs of steam coming from the tail pipe(s). Using a small amount of coolant, with some evidence of gases in the reservoir. It looks like it is early signs of HG failure and that is why I am hoping this product can do a realtively good fix, for a fraction of the price of a new HG!
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - Oil cap left off 7 Nov 2007 (Forum)
t really see that well, but I?ve cleaned up as best I can, and topped up a little bit. Again because it?s dark can?t really get a decent dipstick indication. Will have a look again tomorrow. Other than cleaning up and getting the oil level right are there other issues I need to consider here? Obviously I will speak to the garage about this but wondered if there could be any serious effects from this mistake.
  • andrew moorey & mondeo pinking 28 Dec 2002 (Forum)
have searched the old backroom to your thread about mondeo pinking as I am stuck with the following- 95 1.8 zetec mondeo, pinks really bad during hot weather, but only after the 1st intial start up & run, the next run(s) after engine is up to temp allways produces terrible pinking unless you use minimal throttle opening. during cooler weather & at night no pinking. have replaced the engine coolant sensor, checked the grey "fusible diode" (ford parts description!)
  • Buying a 2nd hand car from a main dealer 23 Oct 2001 (Forum)
Parkers suggests a price for an A1 condition car of 3£870 (having corrected for the mileage) - a whopping £1930 difference. The other car we saw was a 1998 S Escort Ghia with 20,000 at £6,500. This one ain't in the guidebook (it stops at 1997 P) but I cannot believe the price. We have also seen a VW Polo at a VW dealer where the difference between the garage and Parkers prices is only £400 Is the Ford dealer vastly over-pricing these cars or are the guide books not to be trusted?.

  • Should I buy a car with gaps in its history? 8 Apr 2015 (Ask HJ)
I'm thinking of buying a Jaguar S-Type (2006 model) for £4500. I've had a HPI mileage check, which indicates the car "disappears" between November 2009...

  • Renault Grand Scenic II 2009 - MOT emission failed by large margine 5 Nov 2022 (Forum)
Hi, Today, my car has failed emission test by large margin :( It came as a bit of a surprise as last year everything was well within the limits. Today test results (required norm given in parenthesis): CO (max. 0.2%) measured 7.28% HC (max 200pm) measured 495ppm Lambda (0.97 - 1.03) measured 0.77 My question is, do you think that changing air filter, oil and maybe cleaning air sensor could be enough to bring those measurements back within the limits.
  • Speed limits for cyclists? 13 Aug 2020 (Forum)
In London boroughs the 20mph limits help a little as long as motorists are constantly on the look out for the death defying undertaking racer.... If it was me I would apply a national cycling speed limit -say 20mph max for out of town racers and 15mph max for city zones. It's not going to happen is it?
