Obviously, you don't get to spec the car yourself - as you would with a factory-ordered model - but if you're not fussy about the colour or trim then you can make huge savings, especially if you need a diesel for a high-mileage commute.

  You never forget your first car. Mine was a metallic green Ford Cortina, and I drove it everywhere. Over the kitchen worktop, along the skirting boards, over and under my pillow and occasionally around the school playground. I got it for Christmas in 1979, in one of those Matchbox boxes with the 'Superfast' artwork on the cover that was a lot more detailed than the model inside.

  Why was this decision made? Much speculation about William Lyons’ personal involvement with the P8′s death has been made, but an ex-employee of AE-Brico, Peter Wilson, shed some new light on this in Jaguar World Monthly magazine. ‘I arrived one morning to find a large group of engineers, all with long faces, surrounding a P8, which had been subjected to a 30mph frontal impact test at MIRA as part of its proving programme, Peter recalled. ‘The reason for their consternation was all too obvious.

  And the deal was made even sweeter on the realisation that there was enough petrol in the tank to get it home – well over £3.19’s worth, indeed. Result... The downsides? Well, it was filthy and for the first few miles of driving it, I did think it was destined to be a breaker - although it ran well, the heater was refusing to generate any warm air.   Given the K-Series engine’s reputation for head gasket failure, my automatic mindset was to think the worst.
