• Motorcaravans towing 28 May 2007 (Forum)
  I've seen increasing numbers of them towing small cars. I thought the whole point of a motor caravan was that it's a caravan that you don't have to tow, so why tow a car with it? Surely if you don't mind towing you'd just tow a caravan with your car.

  Lats night (christmas night) while returning elderly relatives to their homes we came up behind a vehicle with its brake lights on,but traveling at 20 - 25 MPH.It was not clear at first what was happening, when I sused the situation and overtook the vehicle it was being towed by a vehicle without lights reving like mad, presumably to overcome the friction of the towed vehicles brakes.The tow rope was indeed a tow rope that looked like bailing twine.No sign on the towed vehicle at all to indicate it was being towed. -- rustbucket (the original)

  If you have a licence including category B+E you can tow any trailer up to 3500kg MAM provided that you don't exceed the towing vehicle's towing limit. Whereas in the above case it is the weight shown on the trailer plate that is taken into account (the potential maximum), in the case of a B+E licence it is what you are actually towing.

  The cross member looks like a tow bar frame but will not accept a tow hitch. In the USA the same bar accommodates a tow hitch, but this is not type approved for UK use. Jeep cannot supply a towbar that meets the spec in the UK. So for the c10,000 affected vehicles, you cannot longer tow in the UK.

  The boss of the AA has raised an interesting point about Electric vehicles breaking down on smart motorways or anywhere else for that matter. He states that EVs cannot be flat towed more than 800metres and some cannot be flat towed at all. I was not aware of this fact so that if you had to wait for a lifted tow you could be stranded for some time. Is anyone else aware of the towing restraints of EVs and or Hybrids and why the transmissions do not allow towing?

  Can a car with an automatic gearbox tow a manual gearboxed car? I was going to use a fiat Punto manual to tow with but the tow hook appears to have the wrong thread for the hole! Anyone heard of this problem on Puntos? Need a new tow hook ASAP but they might order the wrong threaded hook for me.

  Whats the opinion these days on towing a vehicle with an automatic transmision.Yaers ago it was advised to disconnect the prop shaft,not eay with a front wheel drive.The reason I ask is a friend who has a Rover ?? auto needs to get it to a garage to fix head gasket (K series engine)the garage said they would tow it.They do know its an automatic by the way. -- rustbucket (the original)

  Anyone? I do seem to remember that there's a maximum distance between vehicles, and that one may not tow a motorcycle behind a car, but that towing a motorcycle with another motorcycle, or towing a car with a motorcycle, is OK. Something about lights must be displayed on the towed vehicle in adverse conditions.

  I'm towing a car this evening to a garage about 8miles away. I bought a tow brace/rod to do this. It's about 2m long and has a spring damper in it. Is there any specifc advice to take on board when towing a car with such a device and for that matter any general towing advice.

  My trade insurance states I can tow fully insured so long as Im not doing it for reward/money, which I wouldnt be. My car is capable fo towing 1.4 ton legally and the towbar a lot more.

  I have seen many cars towing caravans with sagging rear suspension, the tow bar height is therefore lower than it should be. When a caravan is towed, the weight of the van lowers the suspension even more and so the tow bar is even lower - hence more weight is applied to the tow bar.

  This means the car can be towed, with its front wheel off the ground, and rear wheels rolling on the tarmac. There was no need for any one to sit in the towed vehicle and steer it, as with a tow bar. It seemed alot easier than having a trailer, and having to have the space to store one.

  Saw a motorhome last week towing a Ford Ka via a short towbar. No friver in Ka, all four wheels on ground. I've seen breakdown trucks towing this way too. So how does the towed car not decide it wants to take a different course to the one that's towing it?

  Hello, I have been offered my parent\'s 1997 Mercedes C250 turbodiesel auto. It has a towing capacity of 1500kg. How do Mercedes estimate towing capacity? Is it based on a hill start? How steep is the hill? I only want to recover a heavy boat up a pier with it, and tow 2 miles. Am aware of the fact that you shouldn\'t normally tow a trailer exceeding 85% of the vehicle\'s weight.
