Discovering the joys of diesel 14 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Deciding to go from one end of the spectrum to the other (and the car I had before the 528 was a Jap import 220bhp Prelude Type-S) - I traded the 528 in against a '99 Peugeot 106 1.5 diesel, well, I say traded in, it was a straight swap. The 106 was up at £3795, included in the swap was a full service (which I got a new power steering pump out of) and 6 months warranty (music to my ears). -
Golf VR6 - Water Temperature 6 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Should I be concerned about these readings and if so, how should I go about rectifying the problem which no garage seems to perceive as important? Despite the problems I'm very attached to this car. It still goes like a train, returns 30+ mpg on motorway journeys and has only broken down once. Many say get rid of it but I'm disinclined to do so unless the bills are going to start spiralling in which case it might make good sense. -
Prejudice against BMW & Merc drivers 26 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Rover 75 - Congratulations - you have one of the most stylish and worthy vehicles to come from a UK factory in years. Now please move over - my meeting is much more important than your round of golf. Subaru - a) if it's an ordinary car then you are an impecunious hobby farmer with a collection of sheep and goats, and probably a few alpacas, vicunas and llamas. b) if it's an Impreza then you are a danger on the road, young man, and you will surely end up in a ditch by the time I'm home. -

I present my humble apologies to our emminent Master of the Telegraphic Magazine, Lord Veritas Johnothan, for sending here a Telegram not directly related to the Work of our Brotherhood, but the matter is of Importance to all of us as we all use Difference Engines to read this Magazine: I beg to inform the Brotherhood that my Difference Engine has been sent a new (and very nasty) Modus relayed through my Engine's Telegraphic Connection from the Engine of Master Mechanician Lord Belshy (Sir Martyin before his recent accession to the Peerage ) PhD Mech. -
Modern mainstream cars are boring. 10 Feb 2002 (Forum)
They'll get the job done, but you won't feel much along the way. I wish I would have just bought the £10k Jap Import Celica GT-4 and used the change from the £13k the Accord cost me on the £2300 the insurance company wanted to cover me on the GT-4. (And even then the new GT-4 is just a shadow of its former self). -
Drunken Pedestrians 2 Dec 2001 (Forum)
This thread compliments Alwyn's post re the Welsh assembly but I also thought it important enough to create a new thread from: Last night (Friday) I left my company Christmas do about 11:30pm and got in the car to drive home. Before any comments are made, of course I'd had a few drinks, I'd had 5 cokes throughout the course of the evening... -
08 Ford Mondeo Estate titanium 1.8 TDI - Nobody has been able to diagnose problem - HELP! 2 Jul 2020 (Forum)
Recently, i took the car to halfords (a nationwide garage chain in the UK) after getting tired of independant garages shrugging their shoulders at me, after the car faulted on a smart motorway (which for my american friends is a 4 lane freeway with nowhere to pull over at the side of the road if theres a problem apart from 100ft bays every 3 or 4 miles). its important to note that it can go long periods of time without the car doing this, and its usually after ive been assured that it is fixed. The "Fix's" from most recent to oldest 5 - i was told there was a fuel injector which was open circuit. -

Personal leasing 2 Dec 2018 (Forum)
My annual mileage has never exceeded 9,000. As to owning the car, if I only keep it for 3 or 4 years, why is ownership so important? As to the expense, you can appreciate that having changed my car 3 times since 2006 I have taken a fair hit on depreciation. In each case, I have accepted that as the price of having the excitement of a new car and a good chance of continuing to avoid costly repair bills and the risk of breaking down. -
Ford Fiesta Zetec 2007 - Ford Fiesta off centre steering 6 May 2017 (Forum)
You end up going left. I've recently done a little bit of work to the car, a major service and most important, the brakes. I'm a young engineering student hence undertook the work myself. The discs and pads on the front have been changed, cleaned up the guide pins and lubricated. Cleaned up the callipers a little bit too, because why not. -
Any Make / Model - HOW TO: Tint Your Car Windows ! 2 Sep 2016 (Forum)
Tape-measure (not vital but it helps) 1. CLEAN THE CAR THOROUGHLY Seriously, this is the most important part, if the car is not clean now you will have a dirty, dusty result at the end which will be a huge waste of time so make sure everything is spotless now. Never use the same things to clean the inside and outside of the windows as the outside is much more dirty. -
Diesel drivers can rejoice first time since 2001 3 Sep 2015 (Forum)
’s largest motoring organization. Europe produces more gasoline than it consumes while it relies on imports of diesel from countries such as the U.S., Russia and India to meet its demand requirements. As well as the switch to winter gasoline, increased heating demand across Europe in the coming winter months will also help reverse the trend because diesel is now an almost identical fuel to the one that’s used to keep homes warm. -
NEVS 9-3 is up for testing! - Saab 27 Feb 2014 (Forum)
All the three magazines had put a little sneak peek from the test-drive on their websites, and I will here sum up the most important from the sneak peeks. First out was the magazine “Vi Bilägare“, one of Sweden’s biggest car-magazine. Their tester Calle Carlquist drove a car with the automatic transmission, and he thinks the driving experience is completely modern and he also think NEVS has succeed with their idea that the car should feel sporty but still be comfortable. -
Mazda MX-5 - Owner's Diary 2 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Comfort: I have a dodgy back and knee from an accident a few years ago, so seat comfort is important to me. The seats are lovely supportive leathery ones and I've had no problems getting in and out of the car (be a bit embarrassing at my age if I did). I can get the roof up and down from the driver's seat, although I find pulling it back up quite hard from the seat. -
Road deaths on increase 23 Jul 2012 (Forum)
Drivers aren’t taught to drive these days, they’re taught to pass their driving test. It was the same for me. Young motorists aren’t drilled as to the importance of knowing how to drive to the conditions – speed might be indirectly related here, but it’s arguably not gratuitous use of it. Instead, it’s the lack of knowledge and ability to assess the car, the surroundings and the conditions that is contributing towards the needless tally in the fatalities column. -

VW Golf 1.4FSi - Mechanic covered up serious problem! 11 Dec 2011 (Forum)
I cannot believe that a mechanic who was trusted to make sure my Mums car was roadworthy has covered up a fault with two important stability systems, especially in weather where most roads have snow/ice on them! I plan on taking photos in the daylight of the broken pieces of trim and marks to the dash in case I need any sort of evidence. -
Jeep Cherokee - 1996 jeep immobiliser problem wont start 15 Sep 2011 (Forum)
(I even managed to get hold of the guy who bought the jeep originally but he couldnt remember what type of remote he had) The key fob or the receiver have no make on them, the siren has CJI (crysler jeep import on it). So its obviously somehow a connected to jeep but as I said the dealer said they have never seen one like it. If no-one can help on the above question can someone tell me a possible way to bypass it. -

which drivers' car for commute? 25 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I'm not particularly concerned about image / badge and am not wholly convinced by heavy-feeling germanic car quality i.e. depth of engineering reliability more important than the "door thunk"! I've shortlisted the following: Focus / Mazda 3 1.6 diesel - have driven and liked both but my budget would involve highish mileages and concerns about diesel reliability As above but 2.0 petrol - not sure if I'd get near 40mpg on my town & country commute Previous gen Civic 2.0 Type S - fuel economy again?
