  • Mid Life Crisis Convertible 27 Jun 2022 (Forum)
I have a budget of £12k and have narrowed my search down to a few models which I would like some ideas on. Audi A5 BMW 3 series Mercedes E class Volvo C70 I recognise that with my budget I will get something at least 10 years old, but I have two excellent local garages, one of whom is a Mercedes specialist. I'm not sure about the difference in long term running costs between petrol and diesel as I'm not planning to do more than 5000 miles a year.
  • Looking for used car recommendations... 23 Jan 2022 (Forum)
I'm looking for something that fits the below criteria as best as possible but, there is wiggle room -   Cost up to £5k Reliable Reasonable running/maintenance costs Comfortable on long trips (300+ miles) Understated styling C or D class Not a complete "banger" but something I can run into the ground over the next several years   So far I've been looking at VW - Golf, Passat Audi - A4, A6 Volvo - S60, S80 Skoda - Superb, Octavia Seat - Exeo   Any recommendations on the above based on my criteria or any different suggestions? Any advise gladly received. TIA
  • Which SUV to buy? 30 Dec 2021 (Forum)
Hi all, So I narrowed my choice to four SUV’s and have test driven them over the last few days. Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and Subaru Forester as my left field choice (I owned one back in 2012 and really liked it) Out of the ‘premium’ ones the Audi Q5 would be my choice. So now I’m stuck between Audi Q5 and Subaru Forester - I like both of them!
  • Honda Jazz - Uncomfortable/Unsafe Driving Positions 20 Jul 2021 (Forum)
I just cannot find a comfortable position and am forced to drive with my left arm only which is unsafe. I don't have the problem when I was driving other makes (Peugeot/Citroen/Volvo). Its just seems to be with MY car (which was originally my ex-wife's car). Any suggestions?

  • Anyone been watching Flipping Bangers? 6 May 2019 (Forum)
The pair appear to know what they are doing although, like many shows of this format, it's easy to question whether the viewer gets to see the whole story. Also easy to question the mathematics of each project. Series I covered a Porsche 924, Volvo 480, Mercedes 190E, MX5 and a Metro. Series 2 has just started with a MGB GT. So not a Top Gear or Grand Tour type motoring show, but in my opinion, a show for those of us who enjoy a bit of spannering.
  • Which boringly Cheap and Older Q car can one get? 18 Mar 2019 (Forum)
Don’t mind large engines and in fact prefer large petrol engines and insurance costs are not a problem however a reasonable reliability would be an advantage (this tends to leave out Audi and BMW) So it looks like there are only a few Hondas and Toyotas left. Any thoughts on older BMW’s or Vauxhall’s? Or any other suggestions ? Volvo perhaps Thanks for any suggestions, however outlandish they may seem.
  • leon st, volvov 60, mazda 6 message 26 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Want a 3 year old petrol family car with plenty of room in back seats but not too long. The Leon ST is good but no bigger in the cabin than my mk 1 leon. The Volvo V60 is great but the 1.6 petrol is juicy. The Mazda 6 tourer is an option but they are so long that I can see car park prangs (not by me) on the horizon. I have ruled out the Octavia due to horrendous noise in the cabin.
  • All - Conventional cars on way out 14 Jul 2017 (Forum)
Volvo has announced that from 2019 they won't make any more diesel or petrol cars, it's eletric or hybrid from then. France wants to clear the country of petrol and diesel by 2040. So when there are millions of electric cars around we are going to need 20 more power stations according to the press to cope with the demand for electric.
  • Stylish reliable 4x4 under £5k whats the issue ! 26 Nov 2015 (Forum)

  • MINI Cooper Countryman - Fussy auto gearbox / V-Fuel 23 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Noisy, fussy, and possibly uneconomical, progress unless constantly working gearchange.  Hardly the point of auto, and this is my 5th (2 Volvos, Mercedes and BMW). Dealer and MINI UK not too interested so in desperation I brimmed tank (always use non-supermarket fuel) from 7/8ths empty with Shell V-Power.  Almost immediate improvement to auto behaving close to expectation, far less fussy, smoother, more responsive to driver inputs.
  • Subaru Legacy - Subaru Legacy (Used). Inspection of Used Car?... 2 Jan 2014 (Forum)
The Subaru Legacy 2.5 Sports Tourer has kind of grabbed me. Or a 3series or A4. Not in consideration; Saab, Volvo, Lexus, Honda, Mazda, Skoda...). Many thanks.
  • Comfortable & Quiet Crossover 28 Jul 2013 (Forum)
I am looking for a Crossover and here are my decision criteria in order of preference: Very comfortable ride, especially in London which is ridden with speed bumps and potholes Quiet Automatic (dual clutch or another 'lively' type of box) 9s max for 0-62mph (my current Seat Toledo TDI does just that and I would like to match or better it) Reliable   I don't care much about (although I could live with):  Handling (as long as it is not bad) Looks  Big wheels   So far I shortlisted: Skoda Yeti Elegance DSG 4x4 Mazda CX5 2.2d Volvo XC60 (although I'm not sure about their reliability)   Any pointers or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Ian, Golders Green, London
  • Best and safest family diesel for £4000 5 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Going back to 2wd in the ice makes me nervous so no BMW suggestions please due to the RWD lol My son is 5ft 10 so must be something quite roomy in the back - I hate small cars anyway :-D I have looked for an AWD Volvo or Audi but too pricey to get a decent one with reasonable miles and subarus are nearly all gas guzzling petrols What should I spend my hard earned cash on? Thanks :-)
  • Advice: Best option for next car 22 Aug 2011 (Forum)
However, due to the bad Scottish winter last year I’m considering going for a 4x4 such as BMW X5 (3.0d SE), Volvo XC90 (2.4 D5), Honda CRV (2.2 i-DTDi ES) or Lexus RX400h. Key deciding factors for me are: Very good resale value R easonable fuel economy Lowest possible cost of ownership Automatic SATNAV 4 years maximum age 7-Seater (if available) Which would you recommend?
  • best feature in any of your cars 17 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Could it be the door mirrors that auto-fold on the Peugeot 407 when I lock the car with the remote (for those urban streets)? Or perhaps the Dolby Surround option on the Volvo S80 stereo (oh, Radio 2 was never the same again!)? Or the solar powered aircon in the Audi S8 that keeps running after you switch your engine off? Or the electric boot close button on the inside of the Peugeot 607 (my friends got tired of that party trick, but I didn't!)?
  • Which car companies will be left in 10 years time? 20 Dec 2009 (Forum)
With the demise of Saab and others on their death beds and the governments of Europe legislating to make our cars clone-like and fuel efficient above all else I am left wondering who will still be standing in the mainstream in ten years time? I would suggest we might have : One French company (with Nissan); VAG; KIA/Hyundai; Ford (& Volvo?); Toyota (& Subaru?) and Beijing automotive (who I think will be selling us cheap Roewe 75's and the Saab technologies they have just picked up). I wonder where Opel or its offspring might be? Can BMW continue to be independent?
  • Are used diesels still worth considering? 14 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Cars up for consideration, with a 5-6k budget, are Saab 9-5 (I've had quite a few Saabs, feel a fair degree of loyalty to the marque, and quite fancy an Aero estate), Toyota Avensis, Volvo V70, Mazda 6 and Audi (probably too expensive) Some models seem to have a lot of diesels for sale, Mazda particularly. I've read plenty of diesel horror stories here ( I think the Mazda may have featured in some of those) so have discounted diesels completely, but just thinking again and wondering if I'm right to do so?
  • Audi - Advice on new car 15 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I need something bigger with the new car as we now have a large dog, plus I need something which can take the knocks on the unmetalled roads around where we live (the Jag's 18" wheels and LP tyres have been knocked into pieces). My company has deals with Ford (inc. Jag, Volvo and LR) and VW/Audi. I had an A4 Avant before the Jag and was very pleased with it, so I'm favouring either an Allroad or the new Q5, both 3.0 TDI. Any views on either of these two, or suggestions of viable alternatives from the Ford or VW stables?
