petrol in a diesel. please help! 14 Jul 2006 (Forum)
This evening I have put £20 of unleaded perol in my VW Golf TDi. The cars fuel light had just come on so i assume the fuel tank was nearly empty at the time. I soon noticed my mistake and did not start the engine. Can anyone offer some advice. I have been told it would be relatively easy to siphon but don't know what i would do with all that fuel -i know it would be illegal to dump. -
Fiesta fuel tank pressure / breather 28 Jun 2006 (Forum)
My daughters N reg petrol Fiesta gets jerky after a while and stalls fairly often when coming to a stop. Releasing the fuel filler cap produces a hiss of escaping air/gas and driving with the cap loose is perfect. It seems like a build up of tank pressure is the problem. Is there a breather or pressure relief valve anywhere that could be blocked? -
petrol fuel injector cleaner? 28 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Used to be the case of using VW's stuff, as recc by HJ, but now seems to be unobtainable. What's the best one shot stuff around at the mo? Yes, I now, use proper fuel & you won't have any issues, but my dad lives just next door to Sainsbury's... Actually for my (carbed) bike i use a silkolene additive after each winter, just to be sure. Positive I've a bit left in the garage. -
Fuel economy on new car 17 Mar 2006 (Forum)
I'm aware that on new cars, they are not fully economical and takes time for the engine to bed down before becoming more economical. However, this does seems to be a remarkable low fuel economy rate. How many miles does diesel engines needs to cover before they become more economical? And when this occurs, can I expect an improvement of approx 10mpg? Thanks. PS - Apologies to those who has seen this post elsewhere! -
Boulogne 5 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I have been driving in France for 20 odd years so I don't need the sort of 'Don't forget the red triangle' or 'keep on the right' type of advice but any tips on how to avoid getting lost in Boulogne appreciated especially if combined with where to get that all important tank topping fill of fuel before returning to the UK. Unfortunately I will be returning on a Sunday night - never the best time to get cheapest fuel. Is there anywher near the port that does a good deal on fuel? Do these new 'chip-and pin' cards work in European pumps? -

1992 Passat fuel tank 28 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Hi, Im now the not so proud owner of a VW Passat 1992, 1.6 TD estate.... On the fuel gauge it says 15 gallon as the tank capacity. Can anyone confirm this as correct? The gauge is a bit dodgy, going from full to half full now and again, so Im not actually sure whats in it, but I put 10 gallons in the other week and got 550 miles from it before I copped out and filled it up again! -
Calibra Fuel Tank Outlet Pipe Flange 6 Apr 2004 (Forum)
1996 Calibra 8 valve auto with a fuel leak from the tank's outlet pipe flange . (It's metal, with a plastic multiplug, and corroded beyond salvation). After much investigation Vauxhall Customer Services at Luton have informed me that this part is no longer made and in fact doesn't even have a part number. -
Diesel car filled wirh Petrol 21 Mar 2004 (Forum)
When serving in the RAF we converted from Mosquitos to Meteor jet fighters,ie from twin Merlins using 100oct petrol to twin Derwents using Kerosine. The meteors held 325 galls and their duration was app.60mins the fact that we were one of the few in the south to have this requirement for jet fuel,it was laid down that inm the event of a forced landing at another drome that only had 100oct fuel,it was permitted to fill up with this and add 1pint of engine oil per 100galls.of petrol to ensure that there was no damage to the fuel pumps. -
A4 cutting out 6 Mar 2004 (Forum)
I have a problem with an a4 1.9 tdi cutting out when driven hard when the problem occurs the car will be hard started it will turn over for ages before going. the fuel filter was replaced with a new one. The history of the car is that it was originally petrol and the running gear of a tdi se was put into it. the fuel tank an d lines are the original petrol ones but appeared to be the same. the vacume module behind the drivers wheel of the petrol model was removed go it is plumbed the same as the original diesel. i am wondering if there would be a difference in the size of the fuel lines even though they appear the same. if injector cleaner or some other one of these products is added to the diesel it will run fine for the remainder of the tank. -
Ford Fiesta 1998 Zetec 16V Misfire 18 Sep 2003 (Forum)
It is definietely getting worse and is now stalling. It always restarts and gets going again no problem. The problem seems to be worse when the fuel level is say 30% or less in the tank but this could be a red herring. I suspect the EEC engine management system - is there any way I can perform basic diagnostics without going to the dealer? I thought that, as it seems to be related to the fuel tank level, that it might be fuel pump related or maybe even air getting into the system. -
Service Station Fuel Pumps 20 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Right, bit of a moan here, but a question lies within!! Went to fill up my 1995 Pug 306 at my local filling station on Sunday. The low fuel light was starting to flicker and when this comes on I know I have 5 - 7 litres left in the tank. Went to the diesel pump and filled the 60 litre tank to the brim. According to the pump, I got 59.78 litres in. -

Toyota Avensis Trip Computer 19 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I would appreciate anyones views on the following I have a 2001 Avensis diesel with a trip computer as a standard item. The average indicated mpg, over a tank of full, is consistantly indicating 13% better fuel consumption than it actually is. The "Range" left to run on the remaining fuel in the tank, is out in as much as I estimate that it would run out well before the range says zero, wheras the instruction book says that there should be fuel left when it indicates zero. -
1989 Polo fuel tank. 4 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Hardly a mark inside or out and about the cost of a bag of chips. Anyway I noticed on the 89 Polo stalling thread a comment on fuel tank vacuum and breather hoses. Yep you've guessed it the thing takes about ten minutes to get a couple of gallons in without blowing back. It had a brand new VW tank fitted a couple of weeks ago for the MOT. -
Audi 90 Quattro 11 Feb 2001 (Forum)
I have an elderly Audi 90 quattro. 1989 2.3 Litre. which has problems in the fuel area. Can you help/advise? The fuel pump had been noisy for about 3 months and recently after about three miles ( when engine warm) the engine would just cut out. So I thought the fuel pump is very tired and replaced it. -
Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - 01 2.0 starting problem 27 Jan 2016 (Forum)
The following day and ever since the car has failed to start. I've tried changing the fuel filter (as suggested by others) but still no joy. It has also been suggested it could be a fly wheel sensor of even air in the fuel lines? Would be grateful of any help of advise of anyone who has had simular problems. -
04(53) civic ctdi - high pressure fuel pump bust scrap or repair 27 Jan 2014 (Forum)
(Would not recentre and sometimes steerring sluggish). Garage says a tooth has actually broken off the drive for the fuel pump. Is it time to call it a day, not really an economical repair. We do have an alternate car which ironically we were about to scrap. A 99 skoda octavia 146000 miles . It needs full set of brakes to pass its mot. -

Car insurance 5 Feb 2012 (Forum)
On the same subject ,has their ever been a study to compare the rise in salaries with the rise in fuel costs . If you were take the average salary in 1970 to be say £1000 ,and fuel cost £1 a gallon , that would be .01% of an annual salary . How would that compare to today's average salary of £36000 ,with fuel at £6.00 a gallon ,that would be .0165 % I'm guesstimating the figures ,but on the face of it ,it appears that we pay much more for fuel now than we did 40 years ago .or do we.
