  • Which car for my parents? 18 Sep 2003 (Forum)
They won't contemplate any kind of adventurous choice, so there's no point suggesting it. This is their second VW, they've had Volvos previously, so you get the picture. By my reckoning, they'll pull in £5-6k part ex on the Passat and they'd probably contemplate another £6-8k. Any suggestions chaps and chapesses?
  • Classic Motoring Embarrassments 20 Aug 2003 (Forum)
To start the ball rolling, In the 80\'s we had a Volvo 244DL auto. My mother was driving down to the westcountry and we noticed this loud rasping noise that seemed to follow the speed of the engine. My mother was very concerned and pulled into the next garage she came upon and asked the mechanic to take a look at this problem.
  • Cars on TV 9 May 2003 (Forum)
Just been watching one of the numerous house programmes on TV(Channel 4's Selling Houses) and noticed the camera lingering for rather a long time on the Peugeot 607 driven by the presenter. If you watch Location, Location, Location you'll see them do the same with a Volvo XC90. Not really bothered about a debate about the pros and cons of soft marketing, but it got me thinking once again about the long, chequered relationship between cars and TV. Everybody has their favourite, but for my money you can't beat VHK 741S, a Granada which used to appear on The Sweeney back in the 1970s.
  • Vibrating steering wheel. 26 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I have a 480 volvo that has just been lowered with Leda adjustable suspension, 'new' larger front brakes and 'new' rims with 4 brand new BF goodrich tyres. I now have a vibrating steering wheel at over 50 mph (well it wiggles very subtlely).
  • LHD Motor? 11 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I am working on the theory that a LHD will be cheaper here & i will get more as a trade in for my current car, a Volvo S40 2.0T, 1998. I want to get a decent LWB 4X4 for little as (im)possible. So my questions are; Am i right in my thinking or is it best to wait until i get to Spain? Where is the best place to go for a LHD car?
  • Seatbelt - 20th Anniversary 1 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Over this time 375 deaths and 7000 serious injuries per year have been saved. So, hip hip hooray for Volvo. What puzzles me though is that the news item goes on to say that Road Safety Officers are currently out in force reminding people how great seatbelts are. This is fine, but the news item closes with a soundbite from one of these RSOs who says "...it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure all passengers are wearing their seatbelts..."
  • Ineffective Fiat Hanbrakes!!! 11 Nov 2002 (Forum)
What is it with fiat handbrakes that makes them so inefficient? For as long as I can remember small Fiats have always had this problem. I understand that Volvos are also v poor on the handbrake front. Anyway, as I've mentioned on another thread, I've got my Punto booked in at Arnold Clark's for a service and MOT right now. They phoned me to say that most of the components of the back brakes are seized and need to be replaced and quoted some extortionate sum.
  • Engine chirrup 27 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I have a volvo 480 turbo with the following problem: If l accelerate hard (pedal to the metal) from a lowish speed (for example from 20mph in second). The car begins to accelerate, positive turbo pressure builds.
  • vw lt35 diesel engine oil pump 12 Sep 2002 (Forum)
Please can anyone help? I have an old Volvo 740 Turbo Diesel (VW LT35 engine). My local garage replaced the head gasket and now there is no oil pressure. There was pressure before the work was started. Could there be something in the work that would disconnect the oil pump drive?
  • Police Complaints #2 20 Jan 2002 (Forum)
A few weeks ago i complained to Northumbria police about a police volvo doing 95mph on a dual carraigeway in Newcastle as I followed it it turned into a 40mph residential dual carraigeway and got up to 65mpg as I followed it. I thought that it warranted a complaint, so i took the number and complained to the chief constable.
  • Ex Police T5's and Omegas 25 Sep 2001 (Forum)
I fancy the power and am prepared to pay for the tyres, but I would like to run an ex striped one for about 3 years after it's come off its last duty. I've found a place in Cranleigh in Surrey that sells all sorts of white Vauxhalls and Volvos. None of them with more than 100k on the clock and all priced pretty reasonably for 250bhp (£6k for a T5 and £4k for the V6 Omega's) Am I setting myself up for 3 years of replacement gearboxes and expensive engine parts or can I safely scare the hell out of anyone in the outside lane.
  • 2006 Mercedes CLK 200 Kompressor Cabrio - High days and holidays car, a report 5 Jan 2020 (Forum)
Boot space is also better than the Volvo, even with the top down. The car has been pretty reliable thus far with only a dodgy engine temp sensor to report but we did manage to find a good Merc indy in Glasgow who we will use for any future work.

  • Advice on buying PHEV 12 May 2021 (Forum)
Volkswagen Passat 1.4 TSI GTE DSG - 30 miles range, petrol, 90k miles 2. Mercedes Benz C class 2.0 C350e - 20 miles range, petrol, 90k miles 3. Volvo V60 2.4 D5 Twin Engine SE Nav AWD - 30 miles range, diesel, 70k miles All 3 of them are 2017 estate cars, and roughly the same price range. During the week I will use the car to go to work.
  • Testing a Kuga PHEV 27 Jun 2020 (Forum)
The last two may come out too expensive if some of the essentials (like lumbar support) are on the options list.  That's already the case with the Volvo XC40, and Volvo petrol engines all seem to be distressingly heavy drinkers.
  • "Fun" car for retirement 24 Nov 2016 (Forum)
We fancy a convertible (we live in Scotland so this makes perfect sense) and SWMBO quite likes the look of either the Saab 9-3 ragtop or the Volvo C70 (post 2006 with the folding 'transformers' hard top). Obviously a Mazda MX-5 would be a better choice still,  but she seems to prefer a larger vehicle and who am I to argue?  Also, this might be the ideal time of year to buy a convertible up here!
  • Audi A6 Avant - Suggest a car- estate/crossover/SUV - maybe A6? 18 Oct 2016 (Forum)
Hello everyone. Currently researching to buy a 'new' car for the family, to run alongside my wifes Volvo XC60. I am considering an Audi A6 Avant, will be medium mileage, maybe up to 80-90K miles. We have a dog, very much live the rural life in Somerset and already have one child and will probably have additional in future.
