I am moving to Spain soon & want to buy a LHD car. I am working on the theory that a LHD will be cheaper here & i will get more as a trade in for my current car, a Volvo S40 2.0T, 1998. I want to get a decent LWB 4X4 for little as (im)possible.
So my questions are;
Am i right in my thinking or is it best to wait until i get to Spain?
Where is the best place to go for a LHD car? I live in SW London near Barnes.
Will i be better off (cheaper) looking for a double cab truck thing?
Thanks for taking the time to read this and i will keep you posted of the results if i buy anything.

I think it's because no one really knows. In theory, LHD cars are worth less, and when there are plenty around as a percentage of the total, e.g., Ferraris, Audi TTs, that holds true, unless the car itself is in *very* high demand (new Merc SL, maybe BMW X5).

What tends to happen in this country is that ordinary LHD cars tend to go through specialist dealerships who aren't cheap - and as the market is quite limited, most people have a special reason for seeking out an LHD car, e.g., foreign workers in London. Therefore there's not much of a saving to be had, if at all, although used prices in the UK are typically lower than the rest of Europe, because of the fleet market.

I don't know what kind of 4x4 you're considering, and don't really know a lot about them as I'm not a fan. What I would do is sell privately, and if your Spanish is any good, fly over there and buy locally, where you'll have the right local spec for garages to deal with, as well as a much better selection. (I live about 5-10 minutes' drive from you, and I can't think of any local specialists).

Actually I can, although they tend to be more about sports and luxury cars than 4x4 - they're on the corner on the south circular as you go off towards Richmond or Kew.

Try the website of a Spanish car magazine - equivalent of 'What Car' - called 'Autofacil' - website is www.unoauto.com - they give discounts available on a range of new cars

Remember you'll have to budget for changing the headlamps to the opposite dip, assuming that the LHD car you buy in the UK will have RHD lamps.

To get the lowest price on a LHD 4x4 get yourself over to Germany and buy a copy of the local Autotrader magazine,or buy one in the US,preferably Florida and ship back to UK(easy to SVA LHD)or find a private punter trying to sell in E&M or Autotrader and try to nick it off them. All the specialist LHD dealers in the UK know their market and will charge accordingly.
If it was me i would buy in Florida(no language probs) and ship to UK,then run it in Spain on Florida plates until i was told to stop!

Thanks for all the replies.
I will look at the spanish auto-trader site and look into the buying in Florida idea. Will that really work out cheaper?
Cheers all and again, thanks for your help.

There is a specialist LHD dealer somewhere near Basingstoke; might be worth a look if you live anywhere near there. I don't have the name to hand but perhaps another Backroomer has.

A couple of Spanish second-hand dealers websites may be worth a look

www.canalcar.es
www.km100.es

Both are in Madrid, but will give some idea of price levels
