I know my personal situation is skewed by living in a rural area near the Irish border (diesel is significantly cheaper in Ireland compared to the UK). But I know that's not the only factor e.g. tax legislation and percieved fuel economy. I was wondering if the situation is similar elsewhere in the UK?
  • Diesel TS2 2005 - Mazda 6 -Limp Mode at idle constantly 1 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Would be very grateful for an help or info into a problem that has persisted for the last year or more and cannot be solved. Mazda 6 diesel, common rail, no dpf. Car will start up, no lights and runs for about 30 seconds at idle, then it will suddenly throw itself into limp mode, running very roughly with the EML illuminated. Light can be put off with scanner, but will do the same thing again almost imediately.
  • Mazda 6 - 2004 Mazda 6 injector problem 29 Apr 2010 (Forum)
About 2 years ago my Mazda 6 started idling very roughly when started from cold and also had a fairly loud knock. Once it's warm it ran OK but lacked the usual power. My mechanic referred me to a diesel specialist who stripped out the injectors and tested them. He said the nozzles had seized because of bad fuel. I live in a border county and re-fill at the same station. He cleaned the nozzles and the car ran OK for about 6 months then started giving problems again.
  • Vauxhall Astra H estate - Driving technique for a small diesel? 1 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Some weeks ago, I posted about my interest in retiring my old petrol Mondeo estate and replacing it with a 1.3 diesel Astra estate which had been run as a hire car by a good friend.  Well, I took the plunge and the Astra is now mine - or at least, it will be when the documents come back from the DVLA. I liked the idea of £90 ved and lower insurance ....... and the increased fuel economy and, frankly, we didn't need an estate quite as big as the Mondeo.

Or is it a good practice/habit to have the EGR cleaned every now and then (although I don't know how!) and the car was merely telling us via the warning light whereas other diesel engines car may not?? Or could it be the local diesel fuel I get???
  • Ford Euro IV Diesel Info 3 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Ford diesel technology also is progressing in the control of particulate emissions. Particulates are microscopic particles of soot emitted by diesel engines. As part of its commitment to making its engines as clean as possible, Ford is introducing an optional filter to capture those polluting and potentially harmful emissions.
  • Which car next??? 22 Sep 2017 (Forum)
I then do one or two 2 mile short trips but then at the weekend I go off to the lakes or Wales which is anywhere between 200 and 300 miles! This makes me want a small petrol for work and back but then a large diesel for the weekend for the mpg and power on hills!  So as you can see it kinda puts me in between petrol and diesel! I'd also love to know how quickly the 2.2 diesel engine warms up in comparison to the 1.6 diesel engines as I'm not sure it'll warm up on the 10 mile trip to work.
  • Ford Focus Mk2 Hatchback - Advice On Which Car To Buy 23 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Alot of people i speak to say the 1.6 petrol engine is really good for MPG and alot cheaper and less to maintain than the diesel engines. I dont think i would go for a 1.8 diesel because of the insurance. So my question is, which model and engine should i go for, i like the idea of petrol for cost sakes and less hassle motoring but i really want a diesel for the MPG.
  • Volkswagen Golf - MK6 Golf - Purchasing Query 30 Oct 2021 (Forum)
Historically, the 'logic' has always been go petrol unless you do the right mileage, because diesels have cost more to buy. However, generally the cost of a diesel Golf is the same as petrol now, or even a bit less (there are more available).  I am also trying to factor in depreciation, which I assume will be slightly higher on the diesel versions?
  • focus focus 1.8 tdci - focus focus 1.8 tdci weird starting problems 29 Jun 2014 (Forum)
Most of the answers are that from somewhere air in going in the fuel line. That's why it has trouble starting. And if it starts gives while smoke.  I am just worried it might be the fuel pump. If the car starts it drives fine everything is good power is fine.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 96 1.8 TDi Starting problems 26 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hi all, got an annoying issue with my beloved work-horse It's approaching 140k so is no spring chicken but runs as smooth as the day i bought it In a nutshell the problem is starting it: if I try to restart it after being let for say less than 4 minutes the engine turns over but it doesn't start (to describe it better if it were a petrol i'd say it's not firing) to get it to start i manually pump the fuel through using the manual pump thing lock the car wait for the immobiliser light to go red again then unlock, input the code and try again 99% of the time this sorts it PRoblem is it drives me round the bend, especially if i'm filling up with diesel, i ahve to go through this on the forcourt!!
  • Mitsubishi Colt (2009 - ) - Diesel vs. petrol economy 1 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Any thoughts on how the petrol 1.5 would compare with the diesel 2.5 on running costs? Both engines I believe are pretty primitive jobs.
  • Renault Espace (2002 - ) - 05 2.2 DCi Auto poor fuel economy 9 May 2012 (Forum)
Hello - I just wandered if anyone in this forum can pass an informed eye on the fuel economy I am getting ( or not getting ) from my Sept 2005 Diesel Espace 2.2DCi (non-FAP apparently). It is a 5 speed Auto with the "tiptronic" option - i.e pushing the stick to the left turns it into a clutchless manual.
  • Corsa 2008 Diesel 1.2 - EGR Valve, Fuel Injectors the list goes on.... 30 Nov 2018 (Forum)
I really could do with some impartial advice on the above car. Purchased it in April 2018, the car from the start had a bit of a noise on acceleration...
  • FIAT Punto II (1999 - 2006) - 1.9D, the old smoker, quits in time for MOT.. 4 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Put it in for MOT this AM and it was massively under the max smoke limit. Questioning SWMBO, she has switched garages last year, now filling up with a different fuel near her work instead of the well known (also) major fuel brand (normal derv, not extra priced) we have have used for years. That`s a real shocker as I don`t believe in any of this, or fuel additives but that`s the only variable from previous years.
  • Buying used car 20 Aug 2019 (Forum)
One last thing is fuel consumption, I don’t mind paying a little something extra for fuel but it should be at least reasonable mpg if possible. PS : no bmw please, I like the comfort but rear traction isn’t my thing.
  • Renault Laguna II (2001 - 2007) - 03 1.9dci Engine "stop" light and other problems. 15 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Please help, i bought a 03 reg 1.9dci laguna a few weeks ago and started experiancing problems i was driving down the motorway when the engine stop light and the engine management light came on. i pulled over an it would not start again so i got recovered... a mechanic mate of mine looked at it and now its seems to be a ecu or injector fault as its losing the coding..is this a regular problem or can anyone shed any light.. hes fitted a fuel filter and got the diesel to maintain pressure but apparently the injectors are working intermitently thus allowing NOT enough fuel through hes also eplaced a turbo solenoid and cleaned the egr valve and throttle body... short of taking it to a main deal who will probably charge a fortune im and hes at a loss he did say i needed to obtain the code for the key. how do i get this what do i ask for and roughly how much is it?

  • Failed VW TDI PD engine 23 Jul 2003 (Forum)
Hi, I am interested if anybody else has had a similar problem to me and what VW's attitude was. My 3 year 4 month old Golf TDI PD(115hp) engine died at 35,000 miles. The cause apparently was fuel leaking from the injector over night. On starting the engine, the con rod under the cylinder which full of fuel bent - as diesel isn't too compressible. After 5 weeks, a new engine and nearly £1,600 I got my car back.
