  • Toyota Corolla GS 1999 Automatic - Lost all drive and won't start 29 Apr 2013 (Forum)
Whilst driving at 25mph suddenly lost all automatic gears and car coasted to the side of the road - moving gear lever made no difference in any position - engine was still running. Turner off and tried a restart and engine would not turn over (turning key has no effect) - power ok as lights etc come on.
  • m****ic school of motoring. 26 Mar 2013 (Forum)
I had a go at him at the next set of lights, he wound his window down and shouted a few obscenities at me for pointing out his stupidity before driving off!
  • Driving Licence Categories 4 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Morning all, I am going to have to drive a Transit van next month and when casually looking at the back of my licence, I saw there was no van just car and....er...milk float. I thought something like a Transit van was in the same category as car but looking at both my Mum and Dad's licences, I notice they have a picture of a van, and a whole load of other stuff.
  • Driving licence amendment 2 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Hi Is it possible to 'insure' against the DVLA messing up my driving licence (losing entitlements etc..) if I send it off for amendment? I want the 01 restriction removed (need to wear glasses) as I want to learn to ride a motorbike. This came about as I clicked the wrong box when upgrading to a photocard licence; I've always worn glasses but don't need to as I can easily read a number plate at 20.5 metres without glasses and would rather not wear them with a helmet.
  • Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia - X plate (2000) - Temperature gague in the red when driving at speed 19 Dec 2011 (Forum)
When driving at motorway speeds of 70-75mph  the temperature gauge goes right up into to red. When you back off down to 50-60 mph, it falls back to about the 2/3rds point. The header tank is up to the max mark with coolant, and it does not appear to lose any fluid.
  • any - saw someone driving with total disregard 11 Sep 2011 (Forum)
Had a youngster drive all the way down solid white line hatched area at the end of a dual carridgeway to carve 2 of us up ! the one in front severley ! he then didnt stop for the red lights at the roundabout ! blatantley drove over when they had been red a while already, caught him up few hundred yards later only for him to overtake a line of cars round a sweeping lefthand bend with double white lines!

  • Any - Driver discomfort 29 Mar 2011 (Forum)
I am experiencing difficulty when I drive my present car. Essentially, I seem to be squashing my nether regions being delicate about this.  I am sure other men must have the same problem? I do stop regularly etc to get out but its becoming a real nuisance and I am driving to Cornwall tomorrow so I think I will have some difficulty.
  • Fog/Driving Lights - Useful or Show?? 29 Dec 2010 (Forum)
The roads in town are all 30 mph, but the reality in the evening rush hour is more like 5 mph, yet there were people driving with front 'fog' lights on. Surely completely unnecessary in such conditions, and even then I doubt that the majority of front facing lights fitted make any difference in fog. Then of course there are those that think they look good and have them on in any weather!
  • Insurance - So can I drive another car? 9 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Have to admit that I am one of those that has been under the impression that I can  legally drive another car without being named on the policy as long as the car is insured and I have the insured owners permission, although (and this is just a vague belief) the cover is reduced - road traffic act or something.
  • AA driving school franchise has any one 19 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Dear friends Has anyone 1st hand experience of the driving school franchise I can see its not a get rich scheme & the franchise looks a little expensive but do you gain from the benifits, I asume it would be difficult to achieve 40 hrs a week allowing for down time inbetween lessons & travelling without putting in 50-60 but do you get the pupils put forward?

  • Do you slow down in your own neighbourhood? 17 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I like to think that I am a fairly cautious driver, who generally drives fairly conservatively, especially in residential areas. However, I can't help but notice that I definitely slow down, when within a few streets of my home. Anecdotally, it also seems to me that my neighbours tend to drive along my street more slowly than other visitors.
  • Speedometer / Milometer margin of error 8 Dec 2009 (Forum)
From comparing the speed on the clock against my satnav I know that my speedo is about 5mph on the optimistic side at an indicated 70. This is an error of ~7%. As the speedo drive also drives the milometer am I right in thinking that the error is also reflected in the milometer? If this is the case I can knock something like 14k off the car's mileage:) I'd be interested in other members' opinions and experience; I've got to drive over to Wales this afternoon so I'll compare the mileage from the satnav against the trip meter.
  • I have been offered a speed awareness course 25 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I am inclined to accept the Horsham location, however the don't do automatic cars there. So this would mean driving a manual gearbox car - something I haven't done much of for about 15 years - apart from driving my Minor. Does anyone know how much driving is involved?
  • Police dashing to "emergency". 21 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Although as far as I could see, the police cars were being driven in accordance with high-speed emergency driving, such driving is obviously an added risk factor on the roads and I question whether it is really necessary to drive like that on the way to a minor bump in a town street.
  • Vauxhall Agila A (2000 - 2007) - 04 1.2 Small leak in petrol tank - safe to drive? 21 Jun 2009 (Forum)
We're just about full with petrol and I wouldn't describe this as a major leak(it's also on the opposite side of the car to the exhaust) but was wondering what the feeling was on how safe it would be to drive until I can afford to get the tank replaced at the end of the month. Thanks in advance for any help. Dave.
  • Driving in Austria, tax and route advice 17 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I am driving down to Italy in the summer as usual, though this time we are having a couple of nights in Innsbruck on the way down. I know you need an Austrian Motorway tax sticker (vignette?), is it possible to buy one online like you can the Swiss one, if not where is the best place to purchase?
  • Road caves in half an hour after driving on it 1 May 2009 (Forum)
I am quite shocked by this, I drive downt his stretch of road about 2-3 times a week and is only 2.5 miles from where I live. http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/s/1112627_hole_halts_traffic I drove down this just half an hour before, I remember being stuck in traffic behind a police van I just feel so lucky I set off when I did and if I didn't have a car there was a good chance I would have been on the bus which went over it :( It is nice to see our raod tax goes on inspections to ensure roads don't just fall in.
  • Skilled driving 11 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Think about all those brake lights flashing ahead of you on the motorway, mostly indicating that the car is too close to the one in front. Discuss? What else might be considered to be a sign of very good driving?
