I am throwing this in for comment/discussion/criticism/ridicule (no name mentioned). It is obvious that the latest batch of non torque converter automatic transmissions in (small) cars seem to have problems. Why not replace the traditional conventional torque converter with an electric motor? Are there any obvious (or other) reasons why this wouldn't/couldn't work? -

I have just bought a 2001 1.6, 8 valve Astra hatchback with an automatic gearbox. Would someone let me know if there is a lockup clutch in the torque converter such that gearbox input shaft is locked to the crankshaft. If so, does this coincide with the change into 4th gear? -

Okay - people I ask all disagree! Should an automatic be shifted into neutral when at traffic lights etc? I do, because I think I'm doing my wallet a favour but is this true or can I just leave it in drive all the time... Thanks if anyone genuinely knows (rather than guessing like me + friends)! -

I have a XK8 jaguar automatic. The car has just developed a fault, which is, when drive is engagaed, nothing happens then all of a sudden "bang" and it drives off. I thought it was short of hydraulic fluid, but Jaguar say's it is a sealed unit and cannot be topped up. -
