  • Keep it on the black stuff. 22 Feb 2006 (Forum)
The latest is on the 30 mph A307 Old Portsmouth Road into Kingston. The railings between the pavement and the tow path have taken a big hit. At many other sites it is obvious that the driver has not gone round a corner but gone straight on for what ever reason. Is it just in my area or is this a trend that is happening in your area?
  • Ford Fiesta Mk5 1.25 Towbar 27 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I got a quote from Ford of around £400 unfitted and another make (Brink) had over a 6 week wait for one. Also does anyone know where I can find the maximum tow weight for the car? I have looked in the handbook which directs you to the VIN plate but gives no explanation of the codes used on it. Any help would be much appreciated Colin
  • Digital odometers 18 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Earlier Thursday on the A34 heading north from Newbury I saw a Winnebago type motorhome towing a small car behind it. (Obviously to use as alternate transport when the bago is parked up on the camp site). Can't remember what the car was, but it got me thinking. All four wheels were on the ground and I was wondering if it had a digital odometer, would it still clock up the mileage if the electrics were turned off?
  • Rover 800 series 29 Mar 2005 (Forum)
In my tedious search for a CHEAP tow car for our 1300kg caravan, I'm looking for opinions on the Rover 800 series. Anyone know anything about these cars?? They are certainly cheap, they have the weight. I'm thinking about the Vitesse hatch (200bhp turbo)which seems to cost anything from £500 upwards!
  • Audi A3 Tdi Not Starting, Elec Fault? 1 Dec 2004 (Forum)
All other electrics lights, climate control etc are all ok. Greenflag could not find the fault and towed me home.
  • Car recovery trailer 3 Oct 2004 (Forum)
The obvious choice is a recovery firm with a low loader, or front suspension lift, but I was just wondering if anybody knows if it is easy to find and hire an ?A? frame type trailer that will fit onto my tow bar, and if this option is likely to be any cheaper. Reggie
  • Volvo 740 warning light 10 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Hi All Due to the temporary loss of use of my trusty Carlton I have bought a cheap Volvo 740 GL for towing. Seems to do the job reasonably well. But one problem. The left hand warning light on the dashboard stays on occasionally. It looks like an axle with short lines underneath, all enclosed in a circle.
  • astra 1.7td 17 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I have not owned a diesel car before and would be grateful for the views of owners of this type of car. I would need to tow a small caravan (700kg max)and do about 20,000miles a year. I'd like to know about reliability, performance, problems, how are they on motorways and the kind of milages drivers can get out of the car. with thanks Francis
  • Punto 2001 ELX - engine cut out 4 Apr 2003 (Forum)
The car couldn't be restarted by the AA - the immobiliser wasn't accepting either key - and had to be towed to the nearest dealer and awaits a replacement ECU. Has anyone heard of this happening before? I had thought it wasimpossible for an immobilser to cut the engine when the car was going at speed. Can I trust the car not to do it again?

  • Ford Mondeo or BMW 5 series (E34) 4 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I need a reliable saloon for between 20-30k miles per annum. The car will occasionally be used for towing a small car/boat. I am looking at 1997 + MY Ford Mondeo or a E34 5 series (535i?). Fuel economy is irrelevant as private and businesspetrol is paid for. What sort of money should I be looking at, considering I will keep the car for about a year and will get a better deal buying from an auction
  • High miles V70 - a good buy? 28 Jun 2001 (Forum)
I need a vehicle to tow my caravan and have seen a Volvo V70 turbo diesel 1997 R reg with 130000 miles on. Full Volvo service history, asking price £9995. Good spec. with aircon. Whole vehicle looks good. What are the likely faults at this mileage?
  • Citroen C5 - Citroen C5 2.0 Hdi engine failure 26 Sep 2014 (Forum)
She tried to start the car again and nothing happened.  Her husband came out to get it towed to a local mechanic and when it was being towed, he said that the dash came up "Oil Pressure Low" warning when he turned the key. I left the car to the mechanic as the engine would no longer turn over.
  • Skoda Superb - A cautionary tale about DSG Gearboxes 2 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Skoda lasted 33 miles. Expect to be towed to the office sometime later this month. I hope the hire car is a Subaru. ......"
  • Vauxhall Astra H (2004 - 2009) - 2006 2.0 turbo petrol - Bad situation please help 22 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The light went out and I continued my journey, about ten minutes later there was a loud bang and my car broke down, I had to be towed from the motorway and then have the car towed from the depot to the nearest Vauxhall dealer. This cost me £150 and £100 respectively. I was obviously very unhappy that my car had broken down so contacted GM head office who told me that the dealer I had towed it to would investigate it for me, they have came back and said that the issue was due to the car being run with no oil.
  • Breakdown Service for driver fault 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
She noticed her car was making a noise and she thinks one of the wheels might have been a a little off-centre.  She called the breakdown service,  She was told she would have to pay for a tow truck as it was driver fault. She was not covered under the breakdown service.  Although, her breakdown company was n't the AA, but some us do remember adverts such as these:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?
  • MGZS Remind you of anything - GM parts bin bits 19 Sep 2018 (Forum)
There appears to be a school of thought that the powertrain of the ZS is being built "just good enough" low towing weight, low torque? remind anyone of Astra gearboxes? (GM bits) Although I liked driving the car as a day to day thing on a test drive (or 3 )..... ok on all counts, but only that. I decided to stick with the KIA venga.
  • Nissan X-Trail - Family SUV recommendations - £25k 22 Aug 2016 (Forum)
I am spiritually opposed to MPVs and keen on boot space, quiet driving, and enough grunt in the low end to move. No need for towing. Cheers, Eddy
  • MB Citan Dualiner - MB Citan Dualiner as our next car/vehicle 1 May 2016 (Forum)
Biggest concern would be good supportive seats and a decent driving position. A higher towing capability would be nice, but could be lived with. However if Van speed limits apply, this alone would be sufficient to rule the Citan Dualiner out. Presumably if registered PLG and taxed as a car, car limits speed limits  should apply though?
  • Car damaged in car park 21 Mar 2015 (Forum)
Daughter returned to her car ro find extensive damage to the front end (over £1K). Embedded in her car was what looks like a towing eye hole, cover plate. The numbers on it seem to indicate it's from a Daihatsu Sirion, but as they're as rare as hen's teeth I think it's unlikely. Anyone here identify the part number or format to throw some light on the identity of the perpetrator's car please?
