  Could it be that I didn't hold the key in 'start' position for long enough and the engine management system was not 100% operative? My local BMW dealer was likewise mystified, and failed both to reproduce the effect or suggest a reason. In all other respects the car has started and run totally reliably.

  I have a 2001 (Y) BMW 530I Touring, owned from new. In the last 15 months I have occasional flat battery trouble. I replaced the original battery in August 2005 to a high quality Bosch battery. I had to jump start this in March 2006 and had to call the AA last week when it failed in town.

  Hi backroomers, You might have read my whinge a few days back about being unable to sell by 5 series BMW privately. I since dropped the price to £9200 and still no interest! I was thinking of plucking up the courage to go to a BMW dealer, to see what they'd offer me for it, for cash. I'd heard that this amounted to hopeless act of desperation, but wouldn't a BMW dealer be more likely to offer me more than I'd get as a trade-in anywhere else?
